Description
It is a pleasure to submit to you for your comments, #2 on Contagion. Not my favorite, but somewhat landmark in my catalog, Broken Glass was borne out of two things. Like during almost all of Contagion, primarily I was living in a new state of feeling utterly lost and betrayed. I wanted somehow to express this feeling of betrayal, but to simply say it like it is felt entirely too vulnerable. So I wrote a "screenplay" of sorts in my mind which described the situation in a way that was unreal but representative. The other thing going on was I was taking a lot of art classes and we were talking about impressionism and what not and I ended up with a motivation to apply that to my music. I really didn't know if "impressionistic music" was something that was a recognized thing, I just thought it sounded like a cool idea. I guess all music is impressionistic in many big ways but with this song I really tried to exemplify what that meant to me in the moment. I was interested in using dissonance, but not exclusively. Really it was about opening up the doors and not having any boundaries. Could I create a song that didn't intentionally follow any "rules" but focused more on the feeling, the impression, given. These feelings are in the end influenced by unwritten rules of culture and experience, so no, the rules don't just go away. But emotion is an elusive thing. It's more like the colorful rainbow of oil on water. Explainable but inexplicable. Different in a living fractaline way. What would betrayal sound like? What does feeling lost sound like? What words might you string together, not as an english construct in a formal sentence, not requiring their meaning to have a conscious purpose, but just letting them fall out and make whatever mental and emotional impression they make, and could they then evoke a meaning that is somewhat clear from a distance, if not from immediately near. I don't know how conscious this all was on my part. I did have such an ambition but yet I was in fact a lost soul, swimming in my own enigmatic nothingness. The images and sounds that pervaded my consciousness were as real to me in the moment as the work I was creating. And when it was all done, I had simply what we have here. I hope it is worth something I truly do. I am not sure if I could claim real influences, but I remember Pink Floyd being somehow influential. I doubt you will feel I earned any right to say that.

I guess there are people who may mistake this all for being higher minded than it is. I'm kind of like that. I don't fit quite where you'd expect me to fit. If you knew me well enough I hope you could respect what it all means. But how far you get is up to you as much as anything in the world is. I do appreciate your time, thanks much for listening.

Lyrics
watching as the long black stocking feet
silk through middle space
shy this batted eye before
down
slanders up beside me here
hoping ember up my eyes
wonder will you feel it real
out
coffered slapstick silly line
devil on it's face
trust this partly purified
man
sift sand and lives and laughing tears
time is running out
not the first to wonder if to them
it's me that's mad

it's all over now
i'm nothing
lying on the ground as broken glass
reflect through my life spinning
seven years down
it's all over
now i'm nothing
lying on the ground as broken glass
reflect through my eyes spinning
seven years gone

different
I have always had a sick desire to meld the different with the expected, to create something weird that you actually like. If in any way succeeded I am flabbergasted. Thanks much for visiting.

can't bear to listen
to such flattery Feter. If your comment in any way applied to me that would be a thing that might just kill me for the impact of it. I hope I never believe such words, as I don't yet want to die, and I am not worthy of feeling such joy. I cannot respond in any way except to say that I do have more and I am so very pleased if you like any of it. Thanks so much for visiting. I will try not to let you down.

oops
I didn't answer your question. I did write/play all of the instruments. There are two or three guitars (two mostly), and a bass, some drums, and vocals. I am not sure if there is more. I sometimes add some keyboard stuff but I think not on this one.

I encoded with lame with -cbr I am pretty sure. I just clicked the player from a new computer... it plays fine! I am not sure why it works, or doesn't work. I also checked and I can't change the song on the song profile... I guess I'll leave it for now. I am very sorry if anyone hears something garbled wrongly. If anybody reads this and does know what to do please send me a message.

Thanks for joining me my Swedish friend. I once had a friend from Sweden named Patrick... I don't know how to spell his last name but you said it something like this: Hwaylbuhy. As in "quail buy" but with more of an h at the beginning. Know that name? Know how to spell it???? I haven't talked to Patrick in Years.

Raw
I guess it's intentional!, or maybe it's just the best I could do! But I guess it depends on what you mean by raw. I used to tell people I like "hardcore" music, which doesn't mean metal (to me). I like hardcore folk, hardcore classical, and hardcore pop. I actually don't love hardcore metal. This hardcore means raw, pure, real, true. Etc. So I'll take that as a compliment and smile tonight! Thanks!

Flow
thanks for listening, and for the kind comment. That flow was probably the main thing I was going with when I did it. I mean after all I was kind of trying to make a rock/pop song, just one that was all screwed up. I don't know if it was easy or hard, to "go with the flow". But I am glad you felt that there was a flow and continuity, something pulling you onward and keeping you going. Appreciated!!!

dissonance
is an art form in and of itself. this is exceptional song writing. love your low vocals - they fit perfectly with the mood of the song. i love the sort of jilted pacing, jagged edges but like vic said, it still has a dark moody flow to it. great bass and drums. this is just full of emotion. excellent work. thanks for sharing this one.

thanks
Any compliment from Kassia is a great compliment. Interesting choice of words, "jilted pacing". Maybe that is what I was doing across the floor while vomiting out musical phrases and nonsense words??? :) I have had a lot of comments about my music being raw, jagged, etc. I guess all that kind of surprises me a little. I always tried to be natural and direct. I guess that is what people are talking about. I love getting your feedback, it makes me think. I hope that sound is one that makes an impression is all I can say. Thanks for the listen!!!

This is great, it starts out with a incubus or system of a down kind of sound then gets a bowie feel, lot of changes and all good. By the end its like a different song, very well put together. Fav'in it.

Thanks
I always totally appreciate comparisons. This is the second Bowie comparison I have had lately, which is a big surprise, but it's cool to hear. Back in those days I was listening to FNM, Alice In Chains, Cracker, Camper, Matthew Sweet, Beatles, Primus, Pink Floyd, Fugazi, HotHouse Flowers, DMB and all manner of other things. I think the early (pre Patton) FNM influenced my early sound a ton. Mike P. can sing for sure but I always liked Chuck's style. I've drawn on everything I can get my hands on really. But I never listened to a lot of Bowie! Unless you can count watching Labyrinth! Thanks for stopping by.

raw drive
it is the blood on broken glass, raw, honest, visceral. the music and words are confusing. however, they create a very clear and powerful feeling. it is perfection in impressionism. close inspection of the elements make little sense. however, if the eyes are closed, and the entire music is felt, the vision is very clear. there is anguish, anger, regret, vengeance, hopelessness, disbelief. it is a strong feeling in this music. it is skillfully painted artwork for the mind. 0x0
