Description
Well this is a song I'm working on for the 2009 RPM album if I actually do get it done...no pressure tho! Here's some info on the RPM Challenge: click here.
I was thinking of adding guitar to this but I'm rather liking it like this. I finally figured out how to record my vocals using the vocoder in Logic live, play EVOC chords on the keyboard while singing on another track and using the sidechain input to create the vocoder sound in the midi track. I made a loop going ahah and then added the other instruments you hear, Mellotron flutes, celesta, twisted trash kit etc. Sort of an interlude, but it reminds me of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Pet Sounds. That's probably too much information, but there you have it.

never enuf info Jim :-) cause I'm always trying to figure out how you make it sound so good. From the description it sounds like a good deal of this was done live. An excellent approach if you're to knock off ten tunes this month for the rpm challenge..lol

first of all - anybody willing to learn Logic has my undying respect. i really appreciate all your description here, and learning about your process, which i find fascinating. Some very cool sounds, really liking those mellotron flutes and celesta especially. And i agree for what it's worth - guitar not needed!

Cool
I liked this a lot. Felt like indie cinema soundtrack music. I could stand to listen to more experiments in this vein. Nice work.

vocoders are fun
... there's are a lot of options that you can do with it.

the slow downs near the end are pretty slick!

good catch...
there's a little bit of Supatrigga on an automated buss (with Meringue) for both the drum and the vocoder tracks and that was a little detail that I left out, but I sort of forgot. It's in at the beninning and then it drops out until the end. Thanks for your comment!

not too much time
The mix was probably the easiest thing, and figuring out how to use the vocoder took a lot longer and the recording after that was sort of easy. And the mix was sort of automatic. It took looking up the sidechain tips on youtube by LogicNinja http://www.youtube.com/user/SFLogicNinja which I highly recommend.

Gentle
Quite a surprise from you but then you're a very creative person and I'm sure you've got quite a few other surprises up your sleeve as well...

This has a delightful pastoral melody and I really like the way it's offset against the percussion. It certainly works well as an interlude but I can also hear a number of ways it could be developed and turned in to a longer piece. Brought to mind the Art of Noise - remember them?

Cheers

LOVE it!!!
Your "experimentals" are always a triumph in my ears. I love the juxtaposition of what to me are almost sucking sounds with the echoing celesta. I love that celesta sound, it has what I like about the glockenspiel in it. Now I WANT one! I googled it and it just looks like the cutest thing!

I have been playing music a long time. When I was growing up my brothers had a band called the Regal Tones which was quite popular in our little town in upstate New York State. They got bitten by the music bug and later went on to found the p... [see more]
