Description
There are three reasons for putting two songs on Macjams today!

Firstly the 24th February is Shrove (or Fat) Tuesday in Britain and Carnival in many parts of the world so I wanted to sing a song about the day.

Secondly my wife said she’d like to hear the traditional English song ‘The Twenty-fourth of February’.

The third reason is that it’s my brother’s birthday today so I thought I’d do something extra for the occasion… you never know, he may drop in...

The 1959 film 'Black Orpheus' included the Luiz Bonfa and Antonio Maria Sigman song, 'Manha de Carnaval'  and began the craze for bossa nova (new trend). Hearing now that swaying sound takes me straight to the summers of 1963 and 64 by the sea when bossa nova had become part of the jazz repertory, especially through the brilliant playing of Stan Getz.

I wanted to sing this the way it was intended to be heard, in Portuguese, but was nervous of my pronunciation so instead I wrote my own words to convey the dreamy quality of looking back on a chance meeting.

good one
very well sung and versatile guitar playing here.
your natural vibrato sounds a bit anxious, what, if wanted, is a hard one to do.
if not, so what? :oD

Thanks, Ingo! I like your comment! This was the second take of the song; the first was so slow I thought it might sound a bit dull so I recorded it again rather faster to put a bit of life in it. The playing was better, the voice not. So yes, you're right, I was anxious!

Flows naturally
Very enjoyable arrangement, sparse and clear, which is what this song wants. Love the jazzy Bossa feel, and your guitar work is great and well recorded. Your singing is also excellent and natural-sounding. It did sound to me like the vocal should move ever so slightly back in the mix, or maybe add a tincture of room reverb, just to melt it in with the guitar a little better, it sounded a teeny bit too dry and up-front in this recording.

Great piece, wonderful photo!

Thanks, Eduard. I generally record voice and guitar at the same time, as I did on this song; the trouble is I then can't alter the sound balance, though I can change the overall sound. I may just have a third go at this, recording voice and guitar separately and take up your suggestions.
I can't recall where the photo came from, but it's different from most carnival pictures isn't it?
