Description:
On a hot, summer night in Brisbane, on the veranda, thinking, talking, and writing about things...
Lyrics:
The night is warm again
The drinks are cold
A plane is drowning out my words
Surroundings new to me
I feel at home
A breeze is washing down the house
Something strange in her eyes
I search this page for a reason why
She has brought it all upon herself this time
The dog snuck out again
It’s ten o’clock
I left an hour on the stairs
A mirrored circumstance
Is fading fast
My sillohuet is moving out
Something strange in her eyes
I search her face for a reason why
She has brought it all upon herself this time
And this is just the earth
And we are just the life
And living is just a way to pass the time
Something strange in her eyes
I search this page for a reason why
She has brought it all upon herself this time
Everything is not enough
Everywhere is far too close
And everyone I know is one less than I need

Warmed Me Up &mdash 11/27/04 - 03:57:46 PM
I live in Colorado, USA. It's cold and supposed to snow all
weekend. Your song warmed me up. I really like it and
your other stuff as well. Did you use a pickup on the
acoustic? Or did you use the electric fro the guitar riffs?
Maybe it’s a matter of taste, but the guitar riffs sounded a
little too “direct.” I haven’t done much in GB with miking
the acoustic, but it might sound a little better. I don’t
know. Anyway, great song.

Warmed Me Up &mdash 11/28/04 - 11:25:15 PM
Thanks for the comment Jimmy. Yeh, that is my acoustic you're talking about
and I used its built-in pickup. I've tried mic'ing it but I can't get a good,
strong signal and have to turn it up so loud it hisses badly. I do really like
the sound of an acoustic through a mic. I'll keep playing with it. Thanks
again. [ Reply to This ]

I loved the sneek peak you sent me, but this... this is
fantastic. This is one of the best I've heard on this site in a
long time. I'll be downloading this one for sure. Amazing
Nolan. Amazing.

inventive lyrics &mdash 12/01/04 - 12:14:23 AM
nice visual cues & your music plays things up in just the
right places to make things even more interesting. some
professional sounding 'midikey' playing as well-nice work
on that mac keyboard! [ Reply to This ]
Good One! &mdash 12/01/04 - 05:36:59 AM
Strong words, nice arrangement, fine mix.
I'm not sure about the drum stops and starts at the
beginning. They almost sounded like a mistake. And the
off beat snare hit at the beginning also seemed a bit
misplaced. But once the song got going and everything
kicked in fully, it was a great ride. Excellent vocals and
harmonies! Still a very enjoyable tune!
(Don't worry, I might be the only one with the drum
comment.)

Simply Great! &mdash 12/01/04 - 02:56:21 PM
The simplicity of the this tune is its greatest strength. You
have a great gift for communicating story's through song,
and this one is excellant. The songwrting, the singing and
music are topnotch. I was turned on to your music by
Mcboy and he was right, you have thge gift! [ Reply to This ]
Solid piece of work &mdash 12/03/04 - 07:18:23 PM
Well done mate. Great song structure with great lyrics. I
think your voice is a strong point. Suits the style of this
tune. Nice vocal treatment. [ Reply to This ]
exquisuite &mdash 12/06/04 - 12:27:16 PM
on every level. great song. great performance,
arrangement and the song just gets better as it goes
along. The "and this is just the earth..." part made my
heart explode. The BGVs throughout but especially there
were wonderful. Before listening I read through the lyrics
and the last line -"And everyone I know is one less than I
need" made my heart explode when I read it. In the song
though it had a diminished affect. still a great song! [ Reply to This ]
It's in the details &mdash 12/11/04 - 08:59:41 AM
I really like the Billy Joel type details in your lyrics, specific yet universal. Excellent pacing and balanc in your stanzes. Really great lyric writing. [ Reply to This ]
dude, love it! &mdash 12/13/04 - 10:28:23 AM
Nolan, top notch. Strong voals, brill arrangement, love the
bee-bee-boop-boop-boop bits in the background of the
verses. What is that? It's inspired we touches like this, and
you vocal harmony build-ups that I love about your tunes.
Could the chorus have a fatter more bassy sound?
Stronger drums? What do I know! Keep em coming.

Nolan, I haven't been at macjams for awhile, so I am
catching up on my listening. Wow, great job on this track,
everything about it sounds good. From the lyrics to the
sweet chorus, the song overall makes me feel good. Take
care and keep em coming I'll be listening!

Good on ya! &mdash 01/07/05 - 10:30:23 PM
Sorry, had to say it!
This piece is a real work of musical art. So many things
are done perfectly. I actually love the percussion breaks
in the beginning. And the interplay of the guitar lines is
real nice.
Where is the bass from--loops? Midi? It's very tasty. I
agree with Kev, though, that the bass could really support
more in the chorus. It seems to drop out there.
Must be summer in Australia--here in Canada its cooold.
-37 (thats celsius AND Fahrenheit) my first morning back
to school after the Christmas break. I dunno if this song
was able to warm me up totally, but it did inspire me to
take a break from marking and think of writing some
music.
I've said it before and I'll say it again--keep 'em coming.

Good on ya! &mdash 01/08/05 - 04:26:30 PM
Thank you very much, Pooey - I'm glad you like.
I'd recorded most of these songs on my old four-track before getting the
Mac. I used the bass line I played on the old recording, only this time I
replicated it using the pencil tool because my bass is making a bad humming
noise when I plug it in these days.
I'm going to review the chorus bass line on yours and Big Kev's
recommendations. See if I can't chunk it up a bit.
Thanks again. [ Reply to This ]
Great vocal.... &mdash 01/17/05 - 04:12:51 AM
as always, and great lyrics too.
I like the sound of synth I hear from left side in the verse.
Catchy chorus. Well produced.
Thanks for sharing.

Terrific &mdash 02/10/05 - 07:57:02 AM
As always a really well written song and brilliant vocal
performance. There's something about your voice that
really grabs me, not sure what it is but it's really
distinctive and seems to suit your song style so well -
whatever it is it's a good thing so be grateful you have it!
Everything you do just seems so effortless.
Great job [ Reply to This ]
real nice &mdash 02/16/05 - 02:27:46 PM
if i were to quibble it would be to suggest some more compression on the vocal to keep the levels level, so to speak :-) but a cool toon nevertheless [ Reply to This ]

Like a heartfelt embrace &mdash 05/06/05 - 10:33:27 AM
Don't know how I missed this tune back in November when you first posted. You sound really good, you have the sort of perfect light tenor voice to carry soft pop-rock songs, so pleasing, lean, clear, compelling. I like the little guitar licks, layered like tasty thoughts, and your layered Ah vocals are also a highlight. There are times when the loop-based drum track seems too repetitive; and I'm not sure about the bass cutting out on the line "Surroundings new to me." But this is a radio ready solid tune with a very heartfelt vibe. [ Reply to This ]
