Box of Peanuts

Description
File this under "Fake Jazz".

This is an impressionistic rendering of attempting to dump a box full of little unbiodegradable packing peanuts into a trash bag. Really. That's what this is about.

i'll take a gross of Fake Jazz
wonderfully crisp piano & excellent bass - what a solo! this is almost straight as a board compared to some of your creations - tho this straightened board is still pretty curly to us normal folk. what a delicious display of concept, arrangement, and execution with a minimum of variables making maximum impact. very classy, very tasty, real good. walk proud!

Be careful what you wish for
I am very happy this appealed to you, Anne! You have soldiered your way through some pretty murky offerings on my page, and it's very nice to be able to 'give something back', as they say.

Keep listening!

bass
SJ,
I don't know much about Erik Satie, but this reminds me of what I remember of his work. The bass is really magnificent. The pluky sounds that are quite faint and heavily reverbed are a really nice percussive touch. Thanks for setting the stage with the theme and the photo. Inspiration can come from the most mundane places and result in the most beautiful work.

Satie might be a stretch,
but I appreciate the attempt! The piano is a real hodgepodge, hard to ascribe to any one aesthetic (I'm kind of sloppy), but I did work hard on the bass, so I'm glad to hear it's solid to other ears...... Those plucky sounds are half experiment, half design.... I thought they sounded pretty cool. More to follow soon.

Fake Jazz
I don't hear anything that sounds fake here. Just a lovely musical mood that's very well produced.
Cheers

Well.....
'Fake Jazz' is John Lurie's own label for his Lounge Lizards group; I take it to mean that it's not real (ie, heartfelt), but meant to be taken with a heavy ironic bias.

And I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that it's 'well produced'!! My ear for the finer points of polishing is poor.

Thank you, Len. Your new song is a killer!!

this is
smooth and very pleasing.
Miles away (on the right distance) from my smooth anomaly.
The interplay between the double bass and the piano
is great. It seems and sounds like a band and two players improvising.
Excellent, sonny!

Well
Even in your anomalies, you show great consistency. But I plow my field in the way it pleases me....

I'm glad you liked it, Carlos. Best of luck in your new venture, and please stay away only as long as you need to, yes?

thoughts from the bull...
this was really a surprise. very thoughtfully assembled, tho abstract enough to move without being confined. i love that you based it on the peanuts. i used to work with a guy who would eat them to show off. it was funny once or twice, but he did it all the time.

the song is well-played and i enjoyed the way it stays on task throughout, never really losing intent. i could have listened longer, but the ending really was perfect. nice and clean and right at the perfect moment, too.

thank you for sharing! best wishes ~ mark

Great mix
I think the spontaneity of the jam is what I like the most. Those piano hits put the picture of the peanuts in my mind.

Hey Mitchell!
Glad you wandered over here. I keep checking your page for new stuff, but maybe you don't have your gear with you? Then again, maybe your day job is taking up all your time....

Thanks for the listen and the comment. And don't be a stranger.

Very nice rendition.
"Fake jazz" is a wonderful title fo this genre.
I like the bass, it's simply marvellous - and the colorful variations, great light and easy playing ...

Tone
The tone of all the instruments is wonderful. Is the bass real or a a synth? Experimental for sure, but also an engaging listen.

Bass
Both basses are midi. The muted electric one has a ton of echo FX on it, so it pretty much plays itself; but the cleaner, stand up acoustic took some tweaking. Logic's acoustic bass samples are pretty good, I think.

Thanks very much for stopping by and commenting!

wow
those midi bass are excellent! whatever tweaking you did was just right. this is great fun. cool sound choices - and i like that you kept the ensemble small so each instrument is very effective. whatever awakens the muse...styro peanuts are as good as anything else. i love this...thanks!
