Description
This is the flip side to Sleepyhead - same theme - first time living together with a girlfriend...Sleepyhead is the "during" song, this one is the "after" song, mostly about that feeling you've got when there used to be two of you in a space and now there's just you. Musically this is opposite the last one - I've been listening to a lot of Marshall Tucker Band and has that same 70's AM laid back groove.

Lyrics
I know that nature rewards the tough
I know that nature rewards the tough

But still I'd like to burn down the garden super center
where we met then in the aisle with the potted plants
and picked one for a slow death in our living room yeah
why'd we have to get so sad?

I know that nature rewards the tough
I know that nature rewards the tough

But still I'd like to burn down the garden super center
where we met then in the aisle with the potted plants
and picked one for a slow death in our living room yeah
why'd we have to get so sad?

I thought that all we had to do
was cohabitate a space
and all the differences between us
would be bridged by sense of place
that if we woke up in the same pretty bit of sun
we'd never want anything or anyone else

ha
Funky cool vibe. Funny, funny vocals and delivery. Dig this a lot. You are an original indeed. LOVE your stuff, not kinda, like Feter. lol

Production note: Vox could be up a bit and it's a bit too bassy.

But really dig man.

lol, i knew a girl once who told me she "kinda" loved me...should have taken the hint...

Thanks for the production ideas - wasn't sure how to mix the acoustic bass. I'd be curious to hear what other people think, so anyone reading this feel free to make a production comment.

Thanks for the listen dude and glad you liked it

nice one
Reminds me of Cake. Great lyrics and delivery. I like the tight looseness of this and the whistling is perfect. I have a couple songs with the acoustic bass and I found that if you EQ a bit of the low end out and bump up the mid a touch you get a better balance. But it's all subjective really. Anyway, cool song. I downloaded all your songs from your website and this one will fit in nicely on the playlist

cake...
cake
thanks man I love cake. the confection and the band. I was thinking of Clem Snide when I sang this - great band if you've never heard them. They have a song called Joan Jett of Arc that is one of the best pop songs ever. Also your fellow Canadians the weakerthans...Thanks for the prod tip i'll check it out on the next mix.

Love the
way that all your songs sound so different. Although they all have one thing in common, listenability, great pop tunes that stay in your head long after the listen. Very relaxed and accomplished mix. Love the ending.
Cheers

roll over sleepy head
cool composition, those breaks make for a nice contrast. really great tune

an easy thing to do to tame the low end of a bass is use a low cut filter set at or near 76Hz.

sleepy head
thanks Vic. i'll give that a try. I think I overthought the production on this one. Glad you liked the tune though dude.

Im usually
Really into your mixin style but to me in my monitors and Grado and monitor headphones this sounds "Bassy" and the vocal sounds tot washed out .....Not that its too over powering to enjoy this Bit of Sweetness ...I love your Song writing and simple yet effective soundbed .....I think with alittle more Tweeking this one will be right in there man :) Love the Organ on the Left channel :)!

this is what happens...
when you doubt yourself. I usually mix mid/high and let the bass fall out since i use alot of bass anyway but had a comment or two last time that I was missing bass so I mixed diff. this time. I'm going to go back to the old way of mixing...i'll post the new mix on my site soon. Glad you liked the tune - thanks for the help boss.

I like this
sound, the breaks, percussion and your style of singing. Nice pleasant number with good lyrics and a nice backing too.... as others said, the vocal is very low on this, but I enjoyed it, regards M

Nice
Really like the horns toward the end and the bass sound is really good. The bass gets lost a little bit in the mix. If you haven't already, try rolling off the bottom of the guitar and some off the vox. Your panning is also very nice. Some of the cymbal hits sound sloppy as far as the timing goes. Maybe you were going for a loose feel with those, not sure. Nice lyrics. Cake is one of my favorite bands!

Mannequin Races
Hey dude thanks for stopping by. Really liked your accordion tune. I try to keep my percussion loose but not TOO loose so I'll take another listen to those cymbal hits. Glad you liked the song - and the horns, they're my favorite bit.

Cool fun
I love the concept of the song. Sounds like you had allot of fun making this. LIke the horns and git . The bass is heavy I like it like that. The vox could be higher I think but it wasnt hard to follow. Enjoyed thanks

better late than never
Ah I missed this first time around.
Really great tune. the death of the potted plant strikes the perfect melancholic note.
Like a few of your other tunes there's a "subtly funky" thing going on which is probably not easy to accomplish. Great taste and skill shown in the putting together of different parts.
I haven't heard Marshall Tucker but I bet this is better!

better late than never
Hey dude thanks for stopping by - always happy to see you've given a listen. Glad you liked it - and its not better than Marshall Tucker but I like to think it's more interesting at least lol. Houseplants are the unsung victims of breakups, job hopping, moving, etc...they're like disposable pets.

I'll take any and all Cake and Soul Coughing comparisons for sure - that's some major league company for my AA League efforts. Thanks for the listen Bud - as with Relic I always wait to see if you'll like it.

cool
Nice track. I agree the vox could be up in the mix some - they sound pretty cool. I love the use of the horns at the end - it really brings the Cake feel everyone else is talking about.
