Lyrics
Falling Up On The Downside

could you fly to the edge of the moon
did you see the light to soon
did you fall from the star of grace
could you make a permanent change
why did the flowers wither so soon
they were so nicely arranged
turned around turned around

chorus:
falling up on the downside
falling up on the downside
falling up on the downside
my memory is slipping away
my memory is slipping away

do you remember what went down
did you think on the trip across town
do you remember everything
do you remember yesterday
look behind you retrace your steps
always something that we forget
turned around turned around

chorus:
falling up on the downside
falling up on the downside
falling up on the downside
my memory is slipping away
my memory is slipping away

lost many things in the great unknown
found a few things I never owned
everything is so misplaced
everything lost without a trace
could they be on the star of grace
everything is seems misplaced
turned around turned around

chorus:
falling up on the downside
falling up on the downside
falling up on the downside
my memory is slipping away
my memory is slipping away

memory slip sliding....
David Bowie meets Lennon meets Rod Serling... I think, I'm not sure I remember...

Guitars sound great Vic. Very evocative mood song. Falling up... or down or sideways... I'm not sure... slipping away now.

...mostly Rod Sterling....I think.

the title is a spin on a old Yardbirds song..... I'm pretty sure, maybe

you can get a lot of space out from just 4 chords. I think that's the least I have ever used in a song.

Thanks for the listen

great
This is just great Vic. The vocals completely make this. Very nice production as always. This one will be stuck in my head for a while

one cool trick on the backing vocals is to run a few of them through a Rotary speaker effect. It produces that "Blue Jay Way" Beatle vocal sound

The sixties
meet the 21st century.
Really solid drums and bass - exquisite guitars and great vocals/lyrics.
It was really bugging me because the style of this song reminded me of some favourite long forgotten band from the sixties that I loved. Just couldn't think who it reminded me of. Then like a thunderbolt it struck - it's Vic Holman with his own distinctive merge of sixties and present day masterpieces.
Great stuff.
Cheers
Len

they say history repeats. I just want to be ready when the real trippy essence of the 60's comes back around... well in my mind at least.

Love the guitar!
This is another great song from you! I like the bass-line, and love the guitar which sound reminds me in many ways of Rowland S. Howard (The Birthday Party, Crime & The City Solution, etc). The 80's synth drum works really good, and the vocals are well performed. The recording almost has a live feeling to it. It's a good thing to space out and forget. /Mikki

I experiment around with effects and delays quit a bit. the problem is trying to make them work in a song. I was pretty thrilled when they did work in the mix here. I thought the synth drum would be cool for a harder snap.

Thanks for the link on Rowland

Twilight zone
Trippy tune. Like the unconventional drums. Really dig the bass on this in particular. But, it doesn't matter what I write because "Your memory is Slipping Away".

Hey Dave
I was thinking that some things I do like driving to work in the morning becomes so automatic. that you don't remember the driving itself.... don't worry I am a safe driver.
the bass track went down in 2 passes without really working anything out beforhand, I was pretty jacked about that.

the
variation between the electronic and the "accoustic" instrumenatation is very good. This may be your best drums which I listened from your body of work.Besides, another great chorus!

a cool blend
between effects & the synth is something I've been trying to work together, they seemed to work on this one. other time s not so successful and I had to drop them. the drums I kept pretty simple. adding the retro synth drum I thought really fit it well.

I didn't really have anything planned out on this one other then the opening lick. It's basically 3 or 4 chords. Then I just started building over those. A bit on the fly.

the bass
that ended up being the easiest part to this song. I started to jam on it and liked where it was going half way through the first chorus. The rest, well... it took a little longer to figure where I was going.

Thanks for the listen!

A
great song Vic, superb vocals with a great production, everything sounds so polished.
A wonderful 60's sound, love the guitars and the bass line, superb playing and the drums always sound great on your songs.
Very much enjoyed and a download for me.

BTW I love the art work on your home page, great stuff!

I went slow in the mixing. constantly going back and forth on track level and panning changes. sometimes it helps to mix it, walk away, then listen the next evening and rearrange some more. 3 evenings worth.

that art is a collection of song arts. It is cool to see them together.

i'm fashionably late but...
GREAT intro bit, and I like the way it comes back around here and there - seems more texture in this one than usual, or rather a different texture than usual - some real pop, almost R&B elements. Love the way the pop drum bits contrast with the more staid 70's rock type straight up drumming. Also dig the Clash-like disco rhythm guitar here and there. Altogether a great tune man, and at least to me, a bit of an evolution.

not late
sonic textures. more effects to strain the cpu. they worked here for me on this song. On some other stuff that when i would try some wierd effects of synths they didn't quite work out so I would have to drop them. I thought the synth drum would be a neat contrast to acoustic drums. I also like that snap it has.

Thanks man

crazy start
loved it the way it breaks into the lyrics. Falling up I do that allot. love the part right before you sing lost many things in the great unknown. I just want to know have you been listening to sound garden... just asking Down on the Up side is an all time classic. Another Vic classic xcellent!

nice mix
Evokes for me memories of Pink Floyd (wall actually), a band called Dada (which was altogether way too underappreciated), EnuffZNuff (same, in the vocal sense at least. Chip has a cool style.), Beatles, Vic Holman (RIGHT ON!), and others. Your style is really eclectic and a mix of lots of different sounds and etc from about 1960 and plus. I'm also impressed with how ridiculously capable and prolific you are. I doubt I will EVER be able to crank out quality work at the rate you do. No matter what happens. I'm just not that good. Could I say anything else? Nice work.

I've siphoned quite a few influences through the years. that probably is the eclectic style I produce. besides I like to mix a song up a bit so it isn't to repetitive.

Believe me, when I first recording songs, when I first got garageband, my songs were not so hot. It just takes time & practice, plus figuring out how it all works. you've got a great start from the tunes that I have heard of yours.

Good One!
Good arrangement and as always great guitar sounds.

In the chorus try taking the last two lines (my memory is slipping away) and put them between the other lines in the chorus. I think it might add some variety to the melody and add emphasis to the lyrics.

falling up on the downside
my memory is slipping away
falling up on the downside
my memory is slipping away
falling up on the downside

Just a thought. I also love your art work. Always fun and interesting.

Warped!
Your vox is potentially psychedelic and that together with the drum cadence are when led Chronologic to cite Floyd's The Wall. But this is just as easily in Big Audio Dynamite territory... it all depends on the listener's frame of reference; we're al the the sum of many influences. Them's is some pretty warped lyrics, btw. (But they fit the title/theme).

"Got to get back to the garden..." CS&N : )
Or the "Star of Grace" - ahhh, the state of grace - it comes back I think when we stop running willy nilly through our lives at a break neck pace, and take time to enjoy the little things in life - spring cleaning and downsizing helps too - good riddance to clutter actual and mental - it comes back just in time for "old timers" to set in. : )
