Description
Some time ago, Ridd listed his "Fly (high)" as an open collab (http://www.macjams.com/song/50875)... and I thought it was a great song as is. However, I would like to offer a version of it here with what I hope are my subtle additions, including some arco and pizzicato cello as well as backing vocals. Thanks Ridd for your encouragement to work on this song. And to everyone else... go buy the new Satellite Tragedy CD, "New Beautiful"... which showcases Ridd's array of talents and is well worth the dosh!

Lyrics
Fly (High) by Ridd Sorensen

I am running in a dream
down the middle of a street
striding impossibly wide
one last leap and then I fly
up high

Looking out for power lines
as I climb into the sky
people watch from down below
higher and higher and higher I will go

Fly high

and when it's time to go back down
i'm afraid to hit the ground
getting up here was easy
but going back down frightens me

will I freefall to my end?
or will I wake up in my bed?
I dont want to know tonight
so I'll stay up here in the sky fly high

Fly high

Very true
Ridd's stuff is sometimes evocative of Nirvana - but he has his own signature sound too!

Beautifully done
I love the way the cello seems to come drifting in from different directions, in threads and strands weaving through the more solid loom of the guitar. Ridd's vocals are excellent, and the song as rich as dark chocolate.

I think the additions
give a little Middle Eastern flavor and make it more exotic and ethereal. Well phrased singing. Neat. Thanks, both.

Intuition
Your intuition to add a cello was excellent. However, I am surprised you played a harmony line without utilizing the space between his words, which is where I thought their might be more space for you to provide more of a call and response duet voice. Or a countermelody in the short chorus section. I agree with Vic that it the cello is a great dream voice, potentially with the flight of birds yet a weight of gravity that underscores the freefall concept.

Love the image, by the way. Is that yours? Where'd it come from. Very cool.

You are equally intuitive
And I did actually think of doing that - but something made me leave the space there. Perhaps it was the wrong choice.

Sorry - can't remember where I nicked the image -very naughty of me.

BTW - Rain Blather is just absolutely immense - I love it!

this is a tremendous song - the mood and the lyrics - a distillation of an important lesson in life that many (i suspect) have figured out all for themselves...

I love
When you play your Cello. I always thought the cello is such a rich warm beautiful instrument, I prefer it over the violin. I feel you added a body to this already great song. You and Ridd are true musicians. Excellent song!

Grandiose!
This is grandiose gentlemen! I'm not sure if I'm digging the panning of the cello but the songwriting is top-notch.

As a kid I had a vivid dream where I walked off the end of a cliff and I woke up before I hit the bottom. These lyrics remind me of that dream! Very nice indeed.
