I havent done anything like this in a LONG time.....and it was fun. I create things for myself, to help me fall asleep. I have struggled with insomnia off and on my entire life and I discovered that Indian music, ragas....and meditative music like the music produced for the ECM label really helped me settle down. Over the years i have developed a deep love for this style of music.
I did a lot of this type thing early on in my recording days...I have one posted that Mystified sang on for me called SOLITUDE you may enjoy if you like this sort of thing...but this time I had the great opportunity to use REAL percussion played by a master drummer to work with....I went to our rehearsal space with the mics and macbook and recorded Fran Bishop playing the chimes and the tom toms and cymbals with mallets. When I got home and listened back, I realized that Fran had improvised quite a nice journey with mallets and cymbals. i isolated that part of my recordings, and used exactly what he played as the basis for the raga...the first step was to play a drone track on a Fretless Fender Squire bass (Bryan's Boo-Boo)....then I added guitar texture and added chords that the overtones in the cymbals seemed to suggest...then i improvised the guitar solo, then the solo fretless. the last step was to go thru the other things Fran the drummer recorded that day, find some interesting meaty chunks, turn them into loops, and place them through out the piece for accent and motion...the final step being the added ambience of sitar and synth pads which were produced using the playable keyboard function in Garage Band....
So...a little music for rest, or romance or prayer...
