(It Couldn't Happen To) A Nicer Guy
Pretty rough mix this so bare with it, but I wanted to upload something as I haven't for a while.....
I've had the basic structure for this for about a year and it never really got anywhere. The original vocal was the "High five...." lines which now acts as a backing vocal in the chorus sections (also quite unusual to start with the chorus - but I liked it and, well, why not?).
When I finally came to record it I was struggling to find a suitable drum beat, but it fell into place when I stumbled upon the "Motown" beats in EZ Drummer. I would never normally have thought Motown, but the driving snare beat seems to fit quite well. The end result of course is some kind of twisted Phil Collins out-take (especially with the brass) which both appals and fascinates me in equal measure! As I've said before in these intro blurbs I never set out to write in a particular style - so sometimes the end results surprise me as much as anyone.
Lyrically, I'm not entirely sure what this one is about - a kind of fantasy journey to commit a crime of revenge is the closest I've got - I'm open to suggestions! I kind of like the triple vocal at the very end - but it could do with a female voice to bring out the differences I think. Let me know what you think -
Hope you like :-))

chorus
(High five - it couldn't happen to a nicer guy)
Bullet or a vial, now which one will it be
He's looking kind of funny, well that's a certainty
(Quelle surprise - you never got to know the reason why)
Hammer or nail, now which one will it be
You know he had it coming, well that's what we believed
You walked right through it and you knew that you blew it
On the way to France
You claimed you knew it but you still misconstrued it
For a song and dance
So nothing's changed
Just rearranged
We were not looking when we came right upon it
It was quite by chance
And though we knew you were a real nasty fucker
In the circumstance
We couldn't wait
To chalk the slate
chorus
(High five - it couldn't happen to a nicer guy)
Bullet or a vial, now which one will it be
He's looking kind of funny, well that's a certainty
(Quelle surprise - you never got to know the reason why)
Hammer or nail, now which one will it be
You know he had it coming, well that's what we believed
bridge
And you blamed it on the Eurostar
Doesn't make much difference who you are
The time
It's another part another distant line
Heading westwards where the sun will always shine
It's amazing what you see when you are blind
Isn't it a shame?
London Bridge is falling falling
Paris France is burning down
London nights are calling calling
No one really gives a fuck about Paris now

This is very cool. I think the drums work well. I love your comment about not trying to write in any particular style, and being surprised by what you come up with. I know that feeling, and I think it's really part of the adventure! I think your vocal is very effective on this - a sweet, laidback delivery of some really acidic lines! Nice contrast. Great lyrics! Witty and dark. The acoustic is lovely on here - a great sound. The horns do sound a little synthy to my ears, but that's really just a taste thing, as well, and also really just a nit. I really like this song, and I think the arrangement works very well. The move from the opening chorus to the verse is a little unexpected, but in a really good way! Great stuff. Nicely done. Peace.
