The Nightshift Experiment

Description
Dark

err, well, this started out purely as an exercise in seeing if i could right something in 3/4. But the initial result was a bit dull, so ive spent this week brutalising it. put some 4/4 sections in it added some piano,( musical typing.. what a great idea!) and strange synth sounding guitars. The vocals need plenty of work as usual, but i liked there gothic feel so ive left them in. Not going to be everyones taste this one im sure, (and i have no idea what genre it should be) but sometimes you have to challenge yourself i think.

anyway, please... be kind!

challenge is good
Interesting track. The 3/4 time sounds quite natural, so that part of the experiment is successful at least. I like the overall atmosphere too. Gothic is probably a good work for it.

What a creepy picture, btw.

well
im glad there are parts you liked. Dont worry about offending me by telling me which parts didnt work for you though, im always open to criticism.

The picture ties into an idea for a series of songs im thinking i might pursue... possibly.

What works and what not
Ok, the vocal was pretty cool, but it didn't really integrate into the mix. You put some drastic EQ over it, but I think it needs some reverb or so to make it sit better.

ok
Vic, its nice to get another perspective, when youre sat so close to your own work. i could see that vocal wasnt perfect in the actual mix, but wasnt sure if it was just my singing that was a bit not right! never too sure just how much reverb sounds good, so maybe i should go back and look at that. might be time to find something good to play it back through as well.

thanks vic

This is
eerie mostly because of the vocal and the synth sounds. It could be powerful with some more work. It would make a great soundtrack to a graphic novel movie or an old psycho-drama. Thanks.

Thanks
Char. I thought this was going to pass everyone by pretty much, and then i come and find a post by you AND Rebsie. :-)

The nightshift experiment is kind of an idea i had about circus, or freak show maybe, a group full of tired listlessness and apathy, forced to perform. Its a pretty bleak idea i know, but for some reason it seemed to interest me.

Anyway, im glad you came by. Thank you :-)

Tunes from the dark side
Nice dark and edgy goth rock (no, I don't know what genre it belongs in either but that's a common problem on MJ).

I enjoyed this. I think Vic has a point that the mix is not quite fully integrated yet ... if it was me I'd adjust the effect on the vocal just a tiny bit to enable the words to be audible - as most of them aren't. (Unless of course that's exactly the effect you were going for, in which case ignore me!)

I do think it has a lot of potential though. I really like the edgy piano as a contrast to the dark guitars. As a starting point for a more developed song or series of songs, it definitely has legs.

potential?
thank you :-) Im glad you enjoyed it. The paino is definitely my favourite bit of the song, ive never used piano before, and have no idea how to play one! but it just seemed the right idea. The vocals .....well, ive tried re recording them a few times, but somehow dont seem to be able to catch the same feeling, which i actually like despite my complete fear of people hearing me sing! As for the song as a whole... well ive still got a lot to learn about production, but im glad there are people like yourself out there giving me the encouragement to keep at it.

I understand ...
... all too well the fear of letting people hear you sing. But you needn't worry ... your voice sounds perfectly good to me, and certainly fits the song. Singing is 90% about confidence ... the more you start to believe in your voice, the better it will get.

Really liked this
It's a totally different approach. Tool influence? Very dark and interweaving. Pulls you in and really makes you listen to the song. Love the guitar at 2:13. Try going into master track and changing the overall track to POP BASS BOOST to give the drums a more "live" feel. Great job overall.

Thanks
John. i do like to try and mix things up a bit sometimes. with varying success. definitely a big tool fan here!

will try your suggestion. i think sometimes you can listen to so much midi drums here at macjams, you kind of forget what real drums sound like!

You do
a great job of mixing things up. It is what sets you apart from other musicians. Yeah I couldn't get a clean guitar sound if I tried so I am in the same boat as you just with guitar not drums.
