Description
This song has actually been in the works for almost 9 months. The original idea came from an alt-rock song called "Emerald" from my old band LoveSeat Daredevil. My original intent was to do an electronica version of the tune, but as often happens, the thing morphed into its own original creation. The only thing left from the beginning template is the arpeggiated synth part in the verse, (used to be a electric guitar riff). If you are interested, you can listen to this songs influence at the following link:

As the song developed, I thought a female vocal would fit nicely so I asked my wife if she wouldn't mind singing. She is self taught on piano and guitar and is currently learning the bass. She also came up with the vocal melody throughout the song. This is her first time ever singing on a recording and is my first time recording vocals. It was a slow but fun learning process for both of us. I hope to have her sing again on future tunes. The horn parts are me playing my tenor sax. The drums are 2 drum loops (verse / chorus) and have been heavily edited. There is also a lot of additional original drum programming throughout the song. Everything else is soft synth and effects. Mixed in Garageband an mastered in Audacity.

The lyrics were written by myself, and are about a girl who is feeling a little lost and lonely in her long term relationship.
Hope you enjoy it. Any tips, advise or props on the vocals and recording them would be appreciated.

Lyrics
Looking back to the beginning
She thought he was everything
Love with a dose of lust
Kept them pushing on

Lucky guy
She's all that you wanted
Falling Stars Forgotten
Love is what she promised you
Count your lucky stars

Lying on the unmade bed
Staring at the ceiling
With the fan turning round
She thinks they're falling apart

Lucky guy
She's all that you wanted
Falling Stars Forgotten
Love is what she promised you
Count your lucky . . .

He's so busy, always moving
They need the moments to stay
memories to keep them going
The stars are flying away

(x2)
Lucky guy
She's all that you wanted
Falling Stars Forgotten
Love is what she promised you
Count your lucky stars

Raw and alive. Your wife's vocals are great and easy to listen too. I'd bring her vocals up a bit in the mix and accentuate the sax(es) a bit more somehow but doesnt take away from the song. Crazy on the Cannonball !!!! Very creative you are. Ideas everywhere on this one. Great tune!

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I will likely revisit this for some mix adjusting, but I need to step away from it and rest my ears for a bit. Thanks for stopping by.

Lots to like here. Glitchy breaks and 'Men At Work' horns.... far out, man! I really dig the arrangement of all those sounds, and your wife's vocals are very good (your delicate handling of the processing on her tracks is praiseworthy, too). This is energetic, engaging stuff; I thank you.

Thanks for your kind remarks. I like how the vocals turned out too but it was really just a stab in the dark with mixing them, so its nice to know that others are grooving on them to.

Great groove
Your wife sure can sing! I agree with awigze - bring up her vox and the sax. I'd also work a bit more on the mix and lower the master volume as I think it's overall too loud and clipping maybe. Maybe you need to lower the bass? Or put a limiter on the drums. I DLed, [thanks] and looked at the waveform. I think you need to lower something. I'm no expert on these matters btw, so if I'm talking crap, then ignore me!

Anyway, it's a great tune, very powerful, and well worth spending time to get it perfect, imvho.

Good luck, in the job hunt stakes too. Hope it all works out for you.

Hey
Really appreciate the constructive thoughts you have. I agree that the low end is kind of muddy. I haven't really used a limiter as an effect and am not sure how to apply them. There is a bunch of ambient sounds in the 2 drum loops that I used so its been hard to get them under control. I will definitely go back and adjust some things when other areas of my life calm down. Thanks for stopping by.

excellent, tight horns...
love their clear sound. Nice work on the tenor. This is a cool song with a lot of great sounds. And kudos also to the singer... she delivers a real nice performance.

Thank You
My wife is thrilled that people are digging on her vocals. She pays more attention to them in the stuff she listens to so it was much easier for her to come up with an engaging vocal melody.

Nothing lucky about this. Really love this, great song, music, vocals and top notch production. I could definitely imagine this a hit. Radio ready. I can't hear any clipping myself.

Great!
Reminds me a bit of Santogold, which is very cool. Love it! I noticed the talk of clipping and decided to check it out in Bias Peak using Reveal and it indeed is peaking rather severely. You want the numbers? err...Samples clipped on the left channel comes to 5451 and right channel is 5602. In Reveal they put an exclamation mark in the column for samples clipped when it gets to this level. For comparison, I checked out "Lights Out" by Santogold and the samples clipped are more like 404 and 328. It's still a really loud mix, but you get the idea. Yours is a bit too loud; it's really hot.

Where everyone else is saying bring up the vocal, I think you might want to bring the drums and the bass down. I think the saxes sound good where they are. What I was thinking as listening to the mix is that the dynamic range was really small and there was a bit of sameness to the song as it went on, but I think if you make the vocals the louder part of the song, you won't have to worry about that. There's also some really cool snakey sort of keyboard lines that have gotten buried. They may need to come down a bit too to balance things, though. When you get a chance just lower the volume of the bass and drums and you should be golden. Pure gold!

The vocal mix is awesome BTW! Great vocals! the whole things is very pro, and you should be very proud of this as a whole. Great song, great melody, great arrangement, cool vibe. Needs a little tweaking in the mix, but good work!

Awesome
Jim thanks a ton for the advise and investigation. Wow sure appreciate you going to all the analysis work. I'm not familiar with Bias Peak and Reveal. Are they add on effects or separate programs? I was at a bit of a loss on where to go next with the mix, but I like your suggestions and I think in the back of my mind I was thinking on similar lines. Thanks again and glad you like it.

Very excited that the song is getting such a positive response. As is often the case, when you work on something for a long time, paying attention to all the details, its hard to separate yourself and listen to it with an objective ear.

Good meeting you too.

Nice work on the chopped and glitched beats. Tenor sounds great. I like the synth sound your using behind some of the vocals. The whole track has a nice crisp, punchy sound, but I thought I heard tiny bits of clip distortion here and there but could just be me(listened on headphones). How wonderful that your significant other is a musician. You lucky so- and- so.

I'm glad that the drums are working. Haven't had much experience doing glitchy stuff, but I like to listen to it. Big fan of BT. I agree that the song is running a little hot right now, will revisit it soon to further dial things in. Lucky guy, for sure
I dig the keys on this, especially the organ. The quirky percussive nature of the accompaniment is an entertaining bed, almost like a funky circus memory of the days when the relationship began, and the self-deception that propelled it forward. Cool track. In my speakers, I thought the mix was slightly too hi mid-oriented, could use more low end EQ to flesh out the depth in the bass. More like a house mix, if you know what I mean. But I dug. Cool experiment, successful.

hey man i have to say this is probably one of the best tracks on macjams I've heard so far. I think the ending is rad! exactly the way i would have ended it! but beyond that i do agree with the last comment that more bass is needed in the final mix ( this would make the whole piece much more powerful and subduing) also the vocals are incredibly tasty. I love them. But perhaps just a little more master work is in order. I'm thinking just a little more on the chorus to be specific. the only thing i can detect is a slight dryness to them... everything else is tip top! if i could suggest just one thing, maybe throw a wet chorusy reverb track under them? even a duplicate? awesome job dude!!!

Awesome Comments
Thanks so much for the props and advise. Really surprised and thrilled that the song has generated such positive feedback. The wife, who goes by Lola as a nick name (no kidding) is also very excited that people are digging her singing. I did mention it in the song notes but the vocal melody is all here doing. Thanks also for the mixing advise. I'm taking it all into consideration. Gonna take a listen to your stuff shortly.

yo
very nice man. The change up i feel ive heard before, did a specific track inspire that change up? If you dont mind me sayin dude your wifey has quite the voice, congratulate her for me on a job well done. And man you kill that sax, im always up for another collab. If you want some crit im with Jim, my sennheiser headphones were picking up lots of clipping and too much loudness less dynamics. But the melody and progression and structure is real nice man, vocal work spot on, and that sax.....very cool.

WOOOOOOOT!
lovin the way this breathes. I'd love to do some work with you some time! I love the glitchy transfers, overall good job on the mix too. If you still have the multitracks from this, I would love to take a crack at mixing it, or maybe even remixing it into something new.

I disagree with Jim's idea of turning the bass and drums down. rather, I would warm up the bass, cut out some of the midrange on it and focus on laying down a thick sub that bounces tightly under the kick. Then sharpen up your kicks around 6000 Hz to get a slap out of them, give them a tiny peak around 100, and see what you can cut out of them beyond that. Try doubling up that lovely, organic snare with a more electro-style snare with a lot of punch, low in the mix, and give it some tight compression on a send channel, so that your snare hits get that punch without taking up too much space. Otherwise, there could be some EQ carving done here and there, your frequencies are quite stacked. That's probably why you're running hot. Your upper mid-range especially has a lot going on at any given time. Try auto-panning some things, especially the melodic elements, to put them in motion and make them a little less constantly amped.

I especially think solidifying your kicks and backing them up with some well-compressed sub bass direct center on your pan will really help ground the mix and take it from head-spinning to solid.

Awesome
Thanks for all the feedback. I think the main problem with this is the 2 drum loops that I used. They both have some heavy effects going on and are a bit midrangy to begin with. I like your idea of boosting the kick and snare. A lot of the other stuff you've mentioned may be a stretch for me to attempt at this point as I'm still learning. You are the 2nd person to be interested in a remix. Would be open to see what else could be done with it. I'll send you a message with more details as I'm in a holding pattern with music for the moment. Really appreciate your comments.

Happy!
Has a great original, upbeat and happy feel to it. The feel of the songs reminds me of 'Jem'. Excellent job programming - although the drums do get a bit busy and prominent at times. Vocals (very good!) could be louder in the mix and have a little more highs to give them a crisp edge. Sax riffs are awesome and overall I'm not surprised you spent a lot of time on this - the delicate layering and structure of the song make it tons of fun to listen to.
