Description

This is a remix I've been wanting to do using Vol. 10 DoD drums. I made a few other subtle changes to the mix- including using my POD's guitar amp effects on the Eastern Oud loops.

Allen Dean- Lyrics/VOX, bass & first solo

I've not had time to work on any new tracks due to projects at work. I was able to do most of this remix while I was traveling so it worked out for me. It's one of my most favorite collab's and I still have a hard time believing that I got lucky enough to have Allen and Chris help me on this one. It was a pretty boring track without their contributions :)

	I hope... the return sounds a bit better than the original :P I worked quite a bit harder on this mix and am still concerned about some of the levels, but it's the best I currently know how to do. 	Thanks! The cultural elements (I call it that too, hehe) of the Eastern Oud is what drew me in to assembling the original track. I've always liked that sort of element mixed into a rock tune. Nice Mix!
Overall the sound is much clearer in this version. The loops now have more of a mid presence to them. Nice touch in my opinion. Sorry it took so long for me to comment, I've been really busy.

No problem man! Glad you had a chance to check it out. I don't know if I ever could have tweaked the amp settings in Logic to sound as good as the sound the POD gave those loops. I still would have liked to have the bass track louder (except the intro and middle) but I just couldn't make it happen. (maybe in my next life, lol!) I did think this mix was better than the original I did, but I still have much to learn.

Nice to hear it sounds good to you. Take your time with the other projects. I'm going to be quite the road warrior for the next few months, so there goes my free time :(
(I guess I shouldn't complain with the way the economy currently is)

Really good to hear from you! I haven't heard a word from the show producer, so I'm sure they passed on this. I'm still tied up with work quite a bit and can't be here as much as I'd like. Once the patent is finalized I may actually share why I left so suddenly (not sure folks would care though, haha) It is good to be back and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon :P Thanks for the comment, glad you like this version!

	Spirited Remix Huge, sprawling and open the sound of the mix is outstanding, thos drums are perfect! The vocal track is well placed, and that guy is wailing...Nice guitar playing, technical virtuosity and soul, which is rare and well pulled off here. while the first mix was plenty for me, you have taken it to a different place with this one. when you asked me if i wanted to do something with this, i was at a loss. i envisioned what i wanted to do with the bass elements, and i kind of muddled through the first solo, but vocals?
i had no idea.
at the time, i was working on a Montgomery California tune called I Am Monster, as well as remixing Pharoah. between the Frankenstein content of Monster and the Egypt theme of Pharoah, i got the idea of a spirit walk.
what would it be like to loose the bonds of our flesh and travel the open desert with our spirit guide?
to many desert peoples, the spirits surround them, aid them, guide them, and in some cases, torment them. all these things went through my mind as i put pen to paper ( or, more specifically, fingers to keyboard...) and just wrote. after about 4-5 rough drafts, i got what i wanted to sing, and then layed down a rough track.
i will do one or two roughs, do a quick mix, then listen to it for a couple of days, to see if i want to change anything.
i try not to get all into writing vocal melodies and all that. i believe in a more organic, and live collaboration with the music, and as a guitarist, i am afraid any vocal melodies i write will end up sounding like guitar tracks anyway...heh.
so, after tweaking it a little bit, i just layed it down, one take, about 10 minutes warm up. the song was so powerful, i was stoked, and did not need much encouragement vocally. the key is perfect for my range, and i havce to admit getting a little egotistic with that 17 second high note....
i can get into a song, and just hit notes, seeing how long i can hold them... it is a singer thing, i guess.
the toughest part for this song was the first line. starting it on time took about 4 takes. after that, the rest was pure self indulgence.
i found the backing vocals a little harder than usual, cause the key changes were a little unorthodox, but in the end, i think i did them in 2-3 takes.
i really had fun with this song. after i was done recording, and as always after i sing a track, i let my wife take an ear. she thought it waas one of mine. she loved it. she gave me a little ribbing about the long note, calling me a show-off...
to which i usualy reply, "who me??"

Thanks for posting this! It's great to have these kind of details here and I really appreciate your time to write them. This is my all-time favorite collab. and you guys made it all happen. People that I've played for always ask who's the dude singing- "He's friggin' great!"

This track poses a double-edge sword for me, hehe! It's set a bar that I can not reach with newer tracks I've worked on. Everything I do gets compared to this track, lol!

I can't thank you enough for taking this track to a level I never would have considered it to be!
