Description
Inspired by the economic (ahem) "downturn". It's pedal to the metal in what I like to think is a sophisticated package. I play everything (midi drums) and Jan sings a few harmony parts.

Play it lo........ never mind Jim :)

Lyrics
Money To Burn
© 2009 Neil Porter
Capo on 3
I spent a lot of money
On a big, big house
I put a lot of dollars
In a bad, bad plan
Too much money
Going down the drain
I owe a lot of money to a bad, bad man

I spent a lot of money
Buying shares and things
I blew a lot of cash
Buying diamond rings
I flew around the country
In my flash jet plane
I owe a lot of money to a bad, bad man

I had money to burn
It can’t buy love
I had money to burn
Don’t grow on trees
I had money to burn
You can’t take it with you
I had money to burn
It just isn’t everything

I work all year
At an all day job
I spend a lot of time
With the folks I rob
I lost a lot of money
Way too much money
I owe a lot of money to a bad, bad man

I had money to burn
It can’t buy love
I had money to burn
Don’t grow on trees
I had money to burn
You can’t take it with you
I had money to burn
It just isn’t everything

Had a wife and kids
That I hardly saw
They spent all my money
And they wanted more
Too much money
Going down the drain
I owe a lot of money to a bad bad man

I spent a lot of money
On some big, black cars
I drank a lot of money
In my favourite bars
Too much money
I just threw it away
I owe a lot of money and its time to pay

Money to burn
Money to burn
Money to burn
Money to burn
Root of all evil!

Hey Mr Prolific!
Well cool - I think this is my favourite so far! Really great sound - excellent guitar and a really tight bass - love it - and the chorus when it comes in is really nice - reminds me of the Police - especially the chord progression in the verses which is like something off of Synchronicity. Oh yeah they were a trio with a singing bass player.....

Really good!

Not as prolific
as usual Dave. This song has been sitting for a while waiting until I could tweak it. It seems to have worked OK
I always thought I couldn't sing and play bass at the same time, but I figured all I have to do is simplify the bass part and voila!
Sting is a bass playing singer in my list of fav b.p.s.s - the others are Rick Danko and Jack Bruce.

Thanks for the listen and comment Dave - always appreciated.

Guess fewer have that at this point... You have become a guitarist with a lot of tasty licks up your sleeves, and you play them with confidence and allow feeling to shine through. It sounds like you've spend some time together with your tele lately, and it sounds like you two are having a good time:) Very impressive. The tight, fast groove you've got going has a good foundation in the precision pumping away. Great rock'n roll!

Yes - this is the kind of song I'm sure everyone in the band will think of as fun to play:)

Thor
thanks for the kind words about the guitar. I suspect this is the best solo I've managed to record so far - probably down to the fact that even though we're not really doing many gigs as such, we are playing live a lot in rehearsals. Occasionally I get to do a solo :) The new Vox amp of course has been an inspiration also (although the guitars here are Logic sounds)
Cheers,
Neil.

sounding good, yep

the sustained rapid progression builds up tension so to speak, then your lead comes in there and puts some icing on it. Really cool song Neil.

Cheers Harold
The best part about this song was seeing the smile on the guitarist and drummer's faces when we first tried it as a trio. Always appreciate you having a liste and leaving a comment Harold.

Great stuff.
Your last few postings have been very different to your previous stuff and show a great ear for tunes with a very original approach to song writing which is really refreshing.
Cool stuff indeed

thanks for the listen kb. The next one is sounding like another departure from the mold - playing with real people makes such a difference in what ideas come into your head.

Phil beat me to it...
...definitely has a Police feel to the chord progression and the Andy Summers-like jangle and delay...

Scary little song, Neil... It's going to give me nightmares.... Reminds me of the book 'Dog Soldiers'...

I like the solo section in particular....

Zeitgeist
I dig how you are able to keep rolling out topical tunes. You capture the moment. I like how this mix isn't overly compressed, has a lightness to it, as if it is skipping along a hot pavement in bare feet, unable to settle in. A subtle agitation aiding the concept of the tune. Internal turmoil mixed with a generalized disappointment in both self and the world. The current Zeitgeist of the western world. Nice work.

Tobin
Thanks for the listen/comment - always appreciated. This is certainly a lighter touch than usual for me. I've been reviewing all the potential songs for CD#2, and have become painfully aware of my overuse of compression as a result, so I did try to back off on the C-dial as much as I could here. There are still some bits I'd like to fix (eg the crash cymbals seem to have dropped significantly in gain compared to my Logic files), but I'm pretty happy with it.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

i'm not generally into political/topical tunes I prefer distraction from the same but the music is so good dude, and the chorus is killer. Love the synchronicity era Police feel verse contrasted with the super poppy chorus. Just insanely danceable dude - made me want to pogo in my office lol...

Lyrics are really strong here. The vibe you set here is cool. You make it serious, but with a hint of sarcasm.

what can you say about money....?

Good song man.

The end of the dance....
This has a nice guitar tension that holds the bass and drums to the vocal. The harmony seems to release the tension nicely. Love the drum work; seems even more ambitious than previous works of yours, and I like the mix. Nicely done.

Chords
these are four of my own that I made up. They probably have names, but for me they are simply "chords 1, 2, 3 and 4 from MTB" :) I use a lot of simple 2 finger chords on a lot of my songs (letting the open chords ring as well), but these are probably the 4 simplest ever. E A E B (Esus4) on the lowest 4 strings is the first - for the second, drop the two fingers down a string (E B F# G - Em+9) then repeat the pattern one fret up (Esus4+b9+b13 and Em#5). Repeat ad nauseum and rotate the 4 chords for the chorus - simple ;)

Prodigious pertinency
Your song writing seems to be timely these days. Almost time to take this show out on the road, or at least sell them tunes to someone who is. Maybe you could be a regular or on Jon Stewarts Daily show ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Stewart ), or Stephen Colbert's the Colbert Report ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Colbert )

a bad bad man
This is cool. really interesting chords, squiggly synth bits and backing vocals are also very effective.
Finally, I love the line about the "bad, bad man".

Money to burn, what a title, especially in this time frame. Love the musical treatment you gave the song. Sounds like living in the fast lane kind of attitude.

Great track Neil

I'm enjoying it and will link others to it! I also think it would be fun to hear an instrumental version or have an open collaboration with your great riffs this song is based on.

Yep
A very solid view of our current situation. I know too many who have spent and spent thinking they would always have a pay check to depend on. I hate to see so many in this situation even if in a lot of cases it was self inflicted.

Cool jam.

Very cool
Love the guitar sound on the verses, and of course, a sweet bass sound as ever. The lead is very tasty, and I like the way it kicks in. Really smooth and effective drums, and the vocal is excellent. This rocks and makes you think. Now that's an achievement! Nicely done, man. Peace.
