Here's another experimental thing. A while back I found and loved particledots sad but absolutely beautiful open collab 'A.N.' http://www.macjams.com/song/48875. I know some other MJ artists have already done some amazing things with this, but I just had to get a piece of it too. He gave me his blessing and the files and this is the result.
The lyrics are based on a memory of almost drowning in the ocean when I was a kid. I remember being taken by a huge wave and rolling around underwater, where I thought I saw miniature whales watching me. I think maybe I was hallucinating from holding my breath so long or something? Weird huh? Anyway it's a vivid memory and I don't really know how truly bad it was, but it makes for a good subject to write about.
My vocal is effected with the GB autotuner, a little 8-bit crush, and some rotor vox tremelo to create an underwater kind of feeling. Also I added a deep constant boil using the KT Granulator and the pitch shifter on some misc background noise to get that rolling underwater sound as well.
All the music is particledots fine work, but I remixed it a little and added some additional percussion to create a bit of a build throughout.
Thanks for posting the original, particledots. I hope you like this.

Lyrics
I CAN'T HEAR WHAT YOU SAY
OVER THESE CRASHING WAVES
YOUR WISDOM HAS DROWNED IN THIS SEA

I ROLL UNDER WATER
WITH WHALES AND SEA OTTERS
THEY WATCH AS I STRUGGLE to BREATHE

THE WATER IS BOILING WITH AIR ALL AROUND ME
THE OCEAN IS FILLING MY LUNGS

THEN SUDDENLY IT'S CALM
THE FISHES HAVE ALL GONE
I FEAR THAT THE END HAS BEGUN

linda
thanks! i agree it does end too soon. it's weird because out of all the songs I post this turned out to be one of the longest at 4+ mins. perhaps its seems short because it takes a while to get going? anyway, so glad you like it.

Whales and Sea Otters
watch out world, when these two masters get together! Ridd, your creation here, out of Bryn's creation is just magnificent. Thanks for this amazing back story to put a context to these words, and the general feel of of the music. I have to agree with Linda - i'd love this to go on and on. those vox effects are very cool! Two of MJ's strongest in the same song - what could be better?

you're
always so kind... thanks karen! yeah bryn's track is amazing and I wanted to be a part of it. it was so generous of him to post it as an open collab.glad you like this - and you're right - I may extend it to include more of a definitive end section rather than simply fading out. feels like there's more 'story' to tell here.

new favorite
backup vocals are just killer. man you can sing. this has an optimistic vibe that is absent from some of your recent stuff that makes it totally accessible, even though it's troubled and complicated as usual. vocal effects are terrific, and love the "burbling" sound. one of my rsorenson new favorites. Dl'd, thanks!

Wonderful
sounds throughout with an understated vocal. Very lulling but not dark or scary. It is peaceful and accepting. Lovely photograph as well. Thanks to both of you.

This is great!
Thank you
I would never have expected the fragments I uploaded could have taken so many delightful twists and turns
I don't think I mentioned it in my original description of the orginal A.N. snippet, but you hit the nail right on the head when you mention the sadness of the tune...I think it took you to mention it for me to recognise it.
I agree with you about the story aspect of it and I think an extended version could work very well, but I also like what you have done here re the mix, the length, the arrangement and the story. I think it is so full of imagery that the listener can fill in the gaps that you leave...and I think that is quite often more admirable than filling in the gaps yourself
Thank you for doing this
:-)
If you do create another version I am looking forwards to hearing what it becomes

I may post the original piece of music (called 'there's nothing') that the A.N samples derived from a bit later

This combination needed to happen...
Bryn always provides tasty musique... and you have run with it here Ridd. Your vocal application and lyrics are perfect for the music. I really love the falsetto sections especially. I'm sure Bryn is chuffed to bits.... I would be!

Very nice Collab Ridd
you have taken this and made it your own my friend and I like where you went with it. I'd be willing to bet there are others that have shared your experience underwater, albeit in different ways, that can and will connect with this.

Very cool effects on the underwater parts and the vox. Very nicely done Ridd.
