Black madonna

Description
A meditation piece inspired by the black madonna, the most overtly pagan of roman catholic icons.

She is a dark-faced version of the blessed virgin, sometimes veiled and kept in an underground shrine. Anyone familiar with the mysteries of Isis will recognise the symbolism in this.

Like the dark goddess, the black madonna is an archetype of protection, nurturing and transformation.

More particularly this meditation was inspired by a black madonna statue kept in a church crypt in the village of Messines "in Flanders fields", northern Belgium. The Messines Ridge was blown sky high in the first world war - the whole village was reduced to rubble, including its ancient church. But the stone crypt deep below the ground survived, briefly used as an emergency hospital for wounded soldiers, watched over by the dark veiled madonna - one of the only relics of the village to survive.

The church and village have since been rebuilt.

half-tones of dark goodness
sends shivers up my spine... love the drone and the ethereal sparse singing, whistling, and jingling. The half-tone bending of your voice was bewitching. So good to hear something new from you. Calls to primal dragon synapses in me.

Primal calls ...
are the best sort. Listen to the fickle tickles of the goddess in your ear!

Thank you for your encouragement and your kind show of reptilian solidarity.

I hear natural sounds of a
forest and song and whistles calling out for whatever otherworldly powers that dwell there in the shadows, unseen. Interesting take on the dark madonna. I was taught that a painting had been in a fire. Myth or truth? Thanks.

Thank you
You have read the mood of the piece just right.

Some ancient black madonnas have darkened through age or damage, but most were purposely made that way.

Stunning
A riveting piece of work - there's lots of fine details about this (sparing use of voice, percussion and whistles). Also, I particularly like the drone all the way through (presume this is what the cardboard tubes were for - leftover from Christmas wrap?)

Thank you ...
... for your continued support, which I truly and wholeheartedly appreciate.

Left over from Christmas wrap? You must be psychic! I also used a kitchen roll tube - slightly wider bore for added resonance.

you've created an incredible atmospheric, meditational piece of music here. the drone is perfect. i absolutely love all of the various percussive elements that keep this moving without being too over-powering. the innocence and playfulness of the flute contrasts beautifully with the heavy drone and darker tones of the opening vocals. we start deep in that dark crypt and the flute leads us dancing out into the light of the fields, and in the end we sleep cradled in the darkness of the goddess again. beautiful.

Eduard posted the link in the chat. I'm glad he did. The track reflects the image in the picture so very well. Has such an authentic middle-eastern feel and atmosphere. Love the wind melodies. And the vocal parts are hypnotic.
