Description
I started this at 10pm last and almost finished it at 2am. Once again a quickie. I've been struggling recently with my music and just wanted to get this one down. I've been so busy at work I've had little time to experiment musically. I hope that changes soon.

Two people I know are having marital issues. This song is about the need to take a good look at both ourselves and our significant other and learn to respect the things that make each special and unique. Sometimes we need to let these inner special things flow out into the world.

I wish my friends the best.

One primary guitar track (poorly played)
One bass track
Some synth work
Two vocal tracks (that I absolutely detest but sigh... oh well)
Two lead tracks
Some lost sleep
And a whole lot of discontent with how rough this sounds!

I also had a few problems with lost audio tracks, guitar solo drop outs... Quite frustrating!

Comments always welcome and appreciated!

MRH 2009

Have you ever taken the time
To look inside of your mind
Find the wonders hidden there

The ones you never share
The ones you never have shared

Have you ever looked at me
Taken the time to really see
All that I hold dear

The ones I never share
The ones I never have shared

We both hold so much inside
so much good that we hide
We never let it out there

The good things we just don't share
The good things we've never shared.

Its time we let it out
In this world so filled with doubt
Let the good flow out there

All the good things we share
All the good things we can share

Mark!
A new one from you! Great to hear one of yours. Like the dreamy feel on this one. It may clip a little on my speakers, but the production is sweet. The guitar is fitting. And the lyrics are quite poetic.

Nice job Mark,

Dave

nice
know what you mean about trying to find time to do music... story of my life!
don't be too hard on yourself, the vocals and guitars sound fine to me. Performance-wise, I usually prefer a slightly raw quality to over-polished, I'm sure there are others who feel the same way... anyway, this is a really good song. Thanks for posting!

Dude
Dude, this is lovely. The poetry of the lyrics is excellent. You may be unhappy with the mix, but it sounds pretty good to me, and anything that's not perfect can be fixed. The song's the thing, and this is a great song. I really like the guitar sound (and the playing's good, too, whatever you say!) and the synths work here, I think, adding am ethereal vibe that lends a nice moody atmosphere to the track. Your vocal is really good here; you're like me - a self-loathing vocalist! Trust me, there's soul and warmth here that suits the song perfectly. The story behind the song adds a sad note. Here's hoping your friends find their way through. Very cool. Nicely done, my friend. Peace.

David
You amaze me! I mean if I had 1/2 the vocals you do I'd be a happy man. I don't know why you hate your vocals so much. I mean listen to you sing in BigFinish and your own works and you are always right on key with a wonderful tonal quality to your vocals.

I not sure if you can tell but this song starts with the same exact chords as "Find Yourself". As I worked over this basic chord structure a few weeks ago I stumbled into your progression. I'm not sure I did it the justice here that you did in "Find Yourself".

David, thank you so much for the votes of confidence and taking the time to listen and comment.

Sweet
I don't know why you think this sounds rough, Mark. But then you know I'm of the opinion that a natural and heartfelt vocal performance can't be beat! I wish I could put something as good as this together in a few hours ... even my "quickie" tracks take days.

I love the melancholy ambience and sweet melody. No complaints from me.

Sounds good to me!
And it's amazing to me that anyone could produce a whole song with all the parts from 10PM-2AM. I guess when the music wants, the music arrives. Words to think about, even for us single folks. Hey, I really like your voice in this. :-)

Hello RoxyLee
Thanks! Well to be honest I had the chord structure for a few weeks and finally the other night my wife said, "go do your own thing" and I did. I wish I had more time for music. I think I will just have to make more. Thank you for the vocal comment and taking the time to listen Roxy!

mark - you so often minimize your talent! this song is terrific! the fact that you could put this together in 4 hours completely blows my mind. your vocals sound great, i don't know why you're unhappy with your guitar, or why you think it sounds rough. i'll chalk it up to that you were up too late working on it. i love it just as it is!

KAREN!
Well if I could find any talent I wouldn't minimize it! :-) Like I said above I had the chord structure for a few weeks. Laying down the tracks didn't take too long. I fought with some issues as I did this.

I'm unhappy because I can easily see the issues in it and also I'm still unable to break out and really expand what I'm doing. I mean I guess I should be satisfied that I can even make noise but but I want to grow musically and it seems like I hit this brick wall sometimes when putting together a new tune.

Anyway thank you so much for the comment and the listen Karen!

moody mellow
Nice piece, Mark. Excellent suggestive lyrics. Laid-back mellow music... funny, when you do the little slow mordent on the guitar, I immediately hear Moody Blues, Nights in White Satin :-) In fact, this song has a bit of that feel, not a bad thing at all. Absolutely love your voice on this. The breathy synth seemed to be slightly too repetitive in feel throughout, I sort of was wanting to hear a change-up for a chorus or something, but that's about the only nit.
ttfn,
Drakonis

Sir Dragon!
Hey Drak! Moodys huh! We'll I'll take that any day. When I was in 8th grade I got straight A's and a D all four quarters of the year. The straight A's were because I made it a point to sit down, put on the Moodys and do my homework. The D was in typing... Not that I didn't try my best... we just had a girl in there that I think slept with a typewriter! She cranked out 110 wpm with not a single error and when you slide the tip of the bell curve up to her... well my little 35 wpm was a nice healthy D. Hah!

I'm sorry you didn't like the continuous synth. I've been trying to figure out how to take a longer song like this and modify it to give it a new dynamic that keeps the listener attached. Unsuccessfully I might add but I'll keep trying!

Thank you Sir for the comment and the listen!

Hey Vic!
Thank you so much for the comment and listen! Well at first I did bring the guitar track up but a master like yourself can probably hear during the longer lead there were two drop outs. I simply cannot explain these... I mean in the raw audio the guitar note is there but when I mixed it down added the effects to give it the echo it sounds like I missed two notes during the lead. I swear I hit them! I re-recorded it three times and got the same effect in different places. It was driving me nuts... Just one of my little frustrations between 10pm and 2am!

Sounds just fine
And in just four late night hours. A very reflecting, self inspecting number. The guitar (primary track) is honest. The lead guitar's are well rounded and filling, not over killing. I have listend a couple times now and read the lyrics several times. Your description has been put into song very well. I know nothing about production, but this sounds great to my ears. Very nice job.

Beautiful, heartfelt song, Mark. The sincerity of your voice carries the message all the way in. There are moments in the guitar solo where you lay back perfectly, soothingly, longingly. And I especially found your non-lyric vocals effective. The ethereal synth voice tone is lovely.

I'm hearing
some Moody Blues in this one too! The guitar work is priceless. Very restrained and beautiful. The main guitar that you took issue with isn't that bad dude. I do hear the things you're unhappy with but, they are secondary to the great lead work you did here. If you went back and fixed that track it would improve the overall sound of it but, I'm not sure it would make that big of a difference. It's sounds great!!

A worthy effort, Mark. You are artist to the core. And a poet, too. Nice reflection. Seems like the song begs to break loose and rag on like a Led Zeppelin ballad-turned-rocker. Maybe that will be the next track on your formative album: "Let It Out."

Discontent...
... your impeccably high standards shame me. You feel this is rough and yet I'd give my right arm to achieve this level of production. Mellow guitars and a really nice vocal here. I'm getting "Clutching At Straws" era Marillion. Really, really liking this.

Well
I don't mean to be so picky... I guess that when you author and record your own music you hear all the flaws. Thank you so much for listening!

I like this
Great lyrics and really solid delivery. Guitar work fits very well and is nicely played. Vox do seem a bit hot in the mix even if you are going for that ice Floyd feel. Would love to hear some tasteful harmonies added to the "ah ah" parts. Really good stuff.

Ya I think you might be right. Vocals just a bit hot. I guess that is what happens after you try and mix at 1am or so... Thank you for the listen and comment!

Beautiful...
...so many other comments above are right on the money. I can only say that I found: (1) the piece lovely; (2) the guitar work clean and very appealing; (3) bass is killer...with perfect balance throughout; (4) vocals very nicely done...pitch is good, vocal quality is really very very pleasant... Don't underestimate yourself. I do like the lyrics very much indeed. I lean more toward a melody that has a little more breadth. You might consider that if you ever get back to rework any of this. Seems like you could develop the tune a bit... I really like this number.
Peace.
Paul

Hi Paul
Man thank you so much for the great critique and ideas. I really appreciate it. I will consider more tune depth. The problem is I did this really late at night and I have very little range to begin with... Kind of a bad combination. Anyway think you so much!

GEEZ Mark...
...go easy on yourself man. There's not a damn thing wrong with this piece. It's honest and RAW (but not in a sonically abrasive way).

Lyrics are pensive. The vocals sound fine to my old ears. The understated and slightly meandering guitar leads fit the overall mood like a glove.

I give this one two thumbs up my friend!

Be well!

Hey MW
Yeah... I guess sometimes I get a little harsh... It's just there is so much great music and so many great artists here on MJ I get frustrated when things don't go the way I want. I know... grow up and deal with it... I just want to get better.

Thanks for the comment and listen my friend!

cool
laid back and relaxed. uber cool i should say, with lyrics that obviously have meaning, i'll take that over all the shiny polish of production any day.

celestial
i really like the symmetry formed by verse 1 and verse 2. like the two people are mirror images of each other

very moody and spacey - it's the guitar effects i think - the extended bridge works very nicely - gives the listener time to contemplate the lyrics...

the final celestial voices are perfect!

i guess a little very tiny bit of drums might be a nice addition, but maybe not.

nice

thanks

Awesome lyrics and vox Mark
Love the soft back tracks that let those fantastic lyrics shine through. Beautiful guitar lead in this song, so plaintive and emotion filled.

This is a winner Mark, one of your very best my friend. thanks for sharing this one, it's going on the iPod

Mark,
Really dreamy and hints of Floyd on this one, very B-side Dark Side of the Moon. Was expecting it to take off and rock out, but I know how those late night jams get, they lull you into the moodier sides of the mind. Really like the guitar tone on this one. Cheers!--P

Hi Mark
I really like this song. I think you should consider adding some kind of light percussion to define the corners a little. I like the "floating" feel of it, but you may want some slight definition behind your guitar work when you aren't singing. You know, get a listener to tap their feet, and then they remember the song.
MarkHolbrook said 171 days ago (June 7th, 2009)
Hi Andy
This is where I struggle... I considered percussion but couldn't come up with something that seemed to fit. I think this is a limitation of my experience.

Anyway I'm really glad you enjoyed the tune!

Beautiful...
... and all the more so for the little rough edges you've left in (somewhat less rough that what I leave in however!)
Good words, well phrased and some really atmospheric guitar work.
If my rough works were half as good as this I'd be delighted.
Cheers
