Hard to Say

If any of you are actually following me, you know I'm attempting to post some of my back catalog, to get some feedback on what WAS, and to share were I am at and how I got here, with the hope of arousing some interest in future collaboration or other coop of some kind. I'm up to album #3 out of 4. Between the Lines. This one was created just after the turn of the century. Hard to Say is my favorite track in this set, probably mostly because of what it represents. Musically, I think it's a continued expression of the Polly PUt the Kettle On style that has been evolving for some time, but it is strong move out of the sometimes angry and frustrated emotional expression and into a more hopeful vein. During the creation of BTL I was kind of letting go of some "bad stuff" and looking forward to the future and being hopeful about it, letting the negative entrapment go and trying to experiment with being ALIVE again. BTL is a mixture of looking back on the pain and looking forward on the hope of the future. I could go into great detail about how my childhood affected me and how things went rather badly for a few years, but I won't do that. I'll instead say that there were a few deaths along the way and a few big disappointments in some other areas. All of that crap fueled some of my earlier works to a degree, which is fine by me and everything, but btl was special in that it was an expression of a departure from those chains. Anyone who has grown up and had any level of hardship probably can corroborate with me that it doesn't just go away, but as life goes on some pain dims and some other joys can come to life and things can get better. I find this song expresses that moment of freedom when you realize that it's "ok" pretty well. That's what it means to me. What does it mean to you?
