Sacrifice (Absolute Zero)

[Explicit]

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I'm in more of a performing than recording mode, lately...which is a bit frustrating. Lots of tunes to record. But it is what it is...so I'm submitting this electric ditty from the days of analog (amazing...seems so long ago) just to "stay in touch", around here.

Absolute Zero was a band I played in, back in the '90s. We played out quite a bit and, thanks to the drummer's "drum cat" trigger/synth/sampler rig, had some interesting sounds for a 3 piece band with a lead vocalist.

This is a tune about trying to do "what it takes" and the uncertainty that comes with it. Time's passed since recording it...and I've developed a strong trust in the power of good in life (though it does get hard, sometimes...doesn't it?). But that wasn't as present, back then.

As I said: it's an analog recording. Hissssss. The structure's straightforward and basic. Some glitches here and there (it was a tune from our demo tape). I think Scott, the vocalist, really shines, here.

Be interested in hearing your comments...as this isn't what I usually post, nowadays.

BTW: I labeled it "Explicit" because of two mentions of "the word". Born of frustration...

So glad you are staying

What a great song Bob
The performance is stellar as is the recording. I don't hear the hiss you're talking about, but then again I'm deaf. (mostly)

Glad to hear you're performing again. There;s nothing but good can come of that. On stage is the best way to know if you are reaching your audience, and can't do anything but help in the song creation process.

You'll get back into the studio at the exact moment when you really need to be there my friend, so like you said, it is what it is"

Great track Bob

Don't know...
...what would be a useful comment, Bob. I like this song very much. It reminds me mostly of a stage piece. It has that tortured-aria quality to it that puts it in a place beyond just a pop song. I can't make out the lyrics enough to make an intelligent comment on them, though the "God have mercy on my soul" gets to be a little much with the many repetitions...and it's a bit over the top with the torture!!!Yes. Much different than your other posts. This has a sort of "epic" quality to it. Intense. I am exhausted listening...but in a good way. (Um, it gets a little "out there" in the long instrumental playoff. I need air!
Peace.

Now...
...I was waiting for that, Paul.
It's a long tune and there are definitely some spots which are, shall we say: "repetitive"...
But I like the vox...a lot...and it's the last of the 4 tunes on the demo tape from back then...so I figured I'd put it out here for a listen.
Thanks for checking it out, Paul.

3 pc?
how cool is that. Scott really does shine, but it your Guitar work that makes the tune. Balanced between the two worlds of dark and darker :-) you know what I mean. Phased cool edgy & hammered cool edgy. Very much into this. It is a little different from perhaps your other posts, but glad you shared this.

The sampler was a blessing and a curse. At the showcases (get set up quick for that 45 minutes) it could be a pain in the ass if the sound guy didn't have a clue. At the full gigs it absolutely ruled.

A little history

Reminds me of a number of UK bands of the 70s (as much as I can remember anything much from the 70s). Nice sounds (except the hiss) and some cool playing and vocalising. Nice band sound too.

There are some other peoples' touching this...
...contrary to the resulting end to your product here, it's those other peoples that will sometimes influence things toward being outta control in my world these days. If all I had to do was make music, i'd be just fine. Reality!... We do kinda hafta be here w/ others and while affecting one another I guess and so well..., probably better if we act like we do, huh...

I stopped by for some pickn' but this made for a decent surprise, Bob. Diggn' the vibe ya got goin on w/ this band. This tune is definitely a score for that specific station or place of understanding about those things in life that are better when bundled up into a, "neat enough" little package in the mind to be shipped off somewhere towards the unknown lands of, pure detachment... The 90s... One of those rare and timeless pieces to be had from that moment in time... Nice work, Mr Prince. Wouldn't have expected less. Thanks for hangn it out there for us. Always pleasure, sir. Dion

Hi Macca...
...I loved the 90s...and this band was one of the reasons why. We were very into it...and the only covers we did were some James Brown tunes (the drummer sampled the horns). I used to love the rehearsals. Collaborating and expanding on themes.

Thanks...you leave very interesting comments...

Ba-dang!
Damn! I mean Dang! (Showing some respect). No need to make apologies for a message that might be negative. We need to remember not to shoot the messengers. All emotions need to be expressed! (OR at least for you at the time, needED.) BTW the analog hiss is a comforting blanket to this old moldy hacker.

Great combo
Great combo of acoustic guitar and synth, on the intro. Then the drums come in, and it sounds like "Knights In White Satin." The singer sounds a lot like the singer on "Inagaddadavida" by Iron Butterfly. Then the heavy metal guitar comes in, and the resemblance to IB is even closer.

I like the telephone/filtered voice coming in every now and then -- reminds me of Dark Side Of The Moon.

OK, who can tell how old I am, by the bands I reference? I'll make it easy -- 49.

The singer has some fantastic bluesy licks on the lyric "Now I know the meaning of sacrifice." Sounds a lot like Adam on American Idol. (Finally, a non-1970s reference!)

The lyricist has got a real talent for this existentialist sort of 'why' song. Reminds me of Ecclesiastes.

Once the band comes in, I don't hear the hiss anymore.

Bass player's tone reminds me of the bass player for early "Yes" albums.

Feeling it.
The vocals on this is more worthy of listening than any American Idol crap I have listened to lately. The voice is deep and captures the essence of tortured. It goes high and yet never thins out as it wails. Very innovative singing with some bold styling yet never overdone. The background music is brooding and menacing, a fitting background to an arresting vocal performance. The hiss is rather disturbing in the early part of the song, but as the music picks up the ambient noise is drowned out. You can remove that with a hiss-remover software. I'm a pop/RnB artist crossing over to rock and hiphop, and I rarely say that I get it... but not only do I get it with this, it also gets me totally. Haha, whatever that means, it's a great thing.

Great track
The dark sounding music fits the lyrics really well.
It's what Spinal Tap would do if they were serious (and real) band - which I mean as a compliment here!
The occasional background noise that sounds like some wooden blocks falling down adds a certain menace - was this noise intentional?
All the best and hope you get recording again soon.

different
The vocalist gives me a pretty strong "Living Color" vibe. And that is cool I don't get that too often. On occasion his range seems a bit cramped, but otherwise it's a great performance. It's weird because sometimes the range feels open and able, other times kind of limited. I think it's the scale/melody being used maybe... Anyway, it's pretty cool. Some interesting guitar takes in the expanse.
