OVERLOAD W/Bud & LunaTrick

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Several months ago Kevin (Bud) sent me his file's to do a remix of his song "Nothing In The Way" and wondered what I would do with them. I had to think about it for quite a while, because Bud's song was great.

So I had an idea to strip away some of the tracks, leaving five midi tracks and a drum beat. In a random sort of way I changed those tracks to different sound samples through the EXS24 synth. I then played different synths for the verse sections, which are two different chord progressions. Then I added four guitar tracks and a bass track. Plus an additional two drum tracks.

I started doing the vocals and lyrics on the first verse. At which point it dawned on me I needed to get Daniel (LunaTrick) in on this. I sent him what I had at the time and he picked up on the idea and ran with it. Daniel sent me back 4 excellent vocal tracks. I then added an additional 2 backing vocal tracks.

We are getting into a lot of tracks here. Best on headphones for this one.

I started the first verse of lyrics with no real idea of where it would go. Daniel brought it all together.

Daniel on his lyrics:

"I based my lyrics on using circuitry as a metaphor.
How the load in a circuit actually becomes a resister and pushed power back to
the source - sort of made me think of human relationships.
... as if power can will itself and become overloaded."

A big thanks to Kevin and Daniel for making this all possible.

OVERLOAD (Lyrics)

Jam all frequencies, must overload
Transmission silence, erase the code
Nothing but static, the plug is pulled

I'm the Power - I'm the load

I feel resistance on the circuit board
Electric crackle and a dangling cord
Signal surging of its own accord
Close the circuit with your flesh

I'm the Power - I'm the load

Unseen fingers hover on the switch
no certainty and all chance of glitch
Am I in series or in parallel?
Am I in Heaven, am I in Hell?

You're the power - I'm the load

Capacitor crunches overhead
I feel the voltage surging to my head
My eyes go white - electricity
The circuit closes and you're dead to me

You're the power - You're the load

Once the heat of current grips
I take the power from your blue-blood lips
My body tenses and my eyes explode
My fingers dance - you embed the code

I'm the power - you're the load

Now I hunger for an amped out heart
You jolt my system with an angry start
Electric pressure gathers in my spine
I hurl it back down the fraying line

I'm the power - I'm the load

I'm the power - you"re the load

You're the power - you're the load

You're the power - I'm the load

We're the power - we're the load

What a treat!
Great song Vic - you really took this to a whole 'nother place. You're right about headphones - the mix is fantastic. Inspired move teaming up with Daniel - he did a great job on the lyrics and vox. But man the new direction the music took is awesome. I love the bells and glitchy things. Excellent guitars too as usual.

wow talk about timing
initially I was curious on what would happen if i switched the midi tracks in a blind random way. the tubular bells and the glitchy synth where the cool icing on the cake sounds. we've got 25 or 26 tracks going on this. Daniel's one of those type of guys that you know will give 150%.

Daniel did 4 vocal tracks and I did two. It took a bit of manipulating to get them into this mix.
A big thanks to Kevin for letting me experiment with his original tracks

It was great to work with Bud and Daniel.
This was a tricky one to mix. originally there was some phasing and frequency issues (same thing that you and i talked about) that took some time to get around.

Excellent collab!
Fantastic contributions all round. Vic, this sounds a much more comfortable vocal range for you than what you often pick - or maybe its just my early morning ears ;)
Interesting lyrics Daniel. The guitars are restrained but a little ominous - nice to hear them interspersed with other instruments and sounds.
Very cool track gentlemen!

I wanted to downplay guitars on this one. since there is so many cool sounds washing around.

it's a deeper darker song so darker vocals I did the first verse Daniel did the others, We both did backing vocals. pretty cool how they did mesh. I usually tend to think that my voice doesn't play well with others.:-)

Bloody wonderful
Excellent song, excellent production. Do I say that on all your songs Vic? I feel like a stuck record, but really everything you do is totally top notch. And Bud has given you some great material to work with.

Daniel, your voice sounds so confident and assured! You're really getting the best out of it here.

Absolutely love this.

IBEW music
Really like the chord progression in the first part of the verse - it's light and up and a great contrast with the almost Iron Maiden-like heavy chorus. Cool choral backups on the chorus too. And great bells. Dual vox are great - they mesh so well that its difficult at times to tell them apart. Don't have any idea how you mixed this dude there's a billion sounds here, and they all sound clean and unique. Also like the circuitry concept. Bud has written music for traveling salesmen, this is music for electricians. Very cool.

circuit chord breakers
for cerebrals. mixing was a bit of chore but not impossible. I was pretty well surprised on how well the vocals did go together as well as they did. I know 3 moths down the line I might listen to this and wonder how in the heck this worked

Where was I?
I missed this one? How is that possible?

I really like the contrasting vocals and the dark feel of this tune. Quite good lyrics. All those little trippy sounds give this a nice dynamic.

Enjoyed this a lot.

Hey Bob
it took me several months to think how to approach Keviin's files and try to take it in a different style. If I was more of a synth composer it would make me go back through old stuff and redefine them. But, putting this together has opened my mind for future projects.

Gotta agree with Tempie..
.. there's some Maiden in here but there's more, a mellowness in that double vocal that just "works". Love the clash of electronica and mello-metal guitars. Top tune.

maiden electronica
most of my stuff tends to more guitar orientated. So, it was a nice change of pace to do minimal guitar work. Collaborating with Bud and LunaTrick was a treat for me.

collabing with Bud & LunaTrick was a breeze even as complicated as this gets.

the art was bits and pieces from some image cd's I have. slap them into photoshop and maybe ten minutes of mixing it all together. I use to spend days on one drawing. just don'y have the time for it anymore.

Energy - Life Force - runs through everything in the universe.
positive to negative - direct - alternating - great metaphorical image - where would MJ's etc... be without it. Ah Ha moments jumping the synapses of creativity - the instant attraction - the current that jumps between lovers when they meet for the first time - electric. Cool !!! : ) Just remember - dangling cords belong in outlets - not forks. : )
