I like the spoken word aspect of this. Are you playing that guitar. You cannot not listen to this. Some nice changes and the arrangement is outstanding . This is epic A masterpiece. Great piano parts, Between seven and eight are my favorite but there is so much to this to take in. One listen is not enough. Your funny with the wrong pipes part btw.Im not on my Mac so I cant down load it but this is a download for me great painting music. Its like an album side you keep playing over and over. Again so much, I would like to know more of the process behind this how much is you, How much are intruments, samples, loops. A piece to be studied for sure. Ok Im rambling, Im sure this all was done in one take lol , ecellent work Mr Smokey!

i long debated about putting in the voice over. some folks hate voice overs. iterestingly, it gives it a bit of a podcast quality...

that is keyboard played as guitar...

the arrangement is mostly theft: i picked out main themes from Galaxy Band one through nine, and did a countdown back to the originator's song.

the pipes thing was a real life goof that i immediately recreated to capture the moment. my wife was in the room the whole while, and burst out laughing! twice!

the process is spending about 2 or 3 months of occasionally listening to each previous Galaxy Band song and picking out themes, learning to play them, and distilling each down to a couple of minutes. i hope no one gets mad at my "borrowing".

there are stock GB loops, modified loops, and original recordings, edited, all mixed together here. i did nine separate GarageBand projects for each theme, and a tenth one to mix the whole mess together.

one take. yeah, right! :-)

this whole piece is, in a way, a rewind - a "do over" - in several ways... i hope it's not too dark.

i left the ending jam in there mostly as is, it seemed uplifting somehow... and a nice conclusion.

i tried to have the words follow dream-logic. and the pacing of the voice over often sounds very strange for a very good reason - a new production discovery on my part.

well wow
bill this is so incredibly cool. an epic undertaking and the result is breathtaking. i recognized some of the themes - the way you've woven and pieced this all together, wow. i'm reading your comments as i listen and i'm so glad you left the voice over in. usually not my style, but i think the story is so important to the unfolding of this piece. you've done an incredible job here. i've downloaded for many more future, more detailed listens.

When I give it to you "Galaxy Band" was in safe hands, your a master to do this stuff I' very impressed my friend.
This is a huge work no one can take that away from you 22:23 min long I did not feel that, it's a piece to sit down dream away and just enjoy the journey.

And I'm glad you've the voice tracks in there it's fits so well and also that you have them to all 10 parts very cool.

I had to download it cos this is something to have when you want to cool down after a stressed day.

I am suppose
to be learning from you .... how can I if you will not let me keep up. I have Pro Logic .... my insecure head says "the beast will devour you .." while my rational head says "why the hell are you even worried about it ... go listen ... he used GB .... duh." What I am trying to say before comments on tune is you still make me amazed at the rich and full sounds you always produce. Just the best man. On to the piece it's self ... absolutely ... the voice over so works for me. I am making first pass here so still drinking in the lyrics. No sucking up here honestly you are a poet at heart with sonic wings. Love the snippets I am seeing .."as i move ...as a marionette ..." very nice stuff. VW ... biggest compliment I can overall hand you is this ... It Is Long ....Thank You !! It is perfect ... top to bottom. Downloaded...

i'm still using GB2 since it does mostly what i want. someday i may step up to another DAW, but not now. i'd rather spend the time creating stuff rather than learning a new tool. one can never win the race to "catch" technology - it changes so fast.

the lyrics emerged from impressions i got from the lyrics of versions 1 through 9. they are about as loosely related as the musical themes. i couldn't resist doing space-age countdown.

the previous nine pieces play in about an hour. i listened to it a few times, in order from oldest to newest, treating it like an album.

i also read each story in original order a few times to try to get a sense of the arc. taken as a whole, it has a strong sense of fragmentary dream-logic.

so, i tried to extend the series, but also tried to summarize it. i found that running backwards from 9 to 1 led to ideas about undoing mistakes, perhaps with a tinge of regret. let's not turn Earth into another Mars. so i rewound the tape so to speak. a countdown, perhaps to a new launch?

	. as a "cheat" i created all the separate parts at 120 beats per minute. that made mixing a breeze. some parts were better played slower or faster, but i ended up liking the outcome anyway. i think i changed the key on one or two of the parts to make the blending easier too. thank you Check out my latest song called Settle

Blastoff! - monumental imagery
Love that initial descent and growl, melting into rhythm, awesome intro. The soft almost-monotone spoken part helps accentuate the dream-aspect, and is the right addition to this. Lots and lots of creative stuff going on here. The words continue the enigmatic haiku-like poetry style of the Galaxy-Band universe. Tadashi-san must be very proud to have launched this excellent "Voyager" concept into friendly musical Macjams-space, what a life it leads. I can't believe that you came up with 10 totally different well-polished pieces and wove them all together like this. Lots of cool sound effects, you must have had a lot of fun with other signal-generators to create all that wackiness!

Wow, gorgeous tribute to the dream, thank you for keeping it alive so vividly! Whom shall receive the baton now?

that opening descent is a GarageBand mono synth with a maximum glide delay setting. i added a huge reverb to it, and played a sweep from a very low note up to a high note. what you hear is that recording played backwards. i feel the opening timbre is beautiful and strings-like, but then it evolves into something entirely different: dark and scary. in a way, it's symbolic of the entire time-reversed piece, turning Earth into Mars.

in some ways, this was like herding cats. the whole set of Galaxy Band pieces contains a ton of musical ideas. i think it is entirely possible to create at least ten more pieces like this one by choosing different themes from the originals and interpreting and blending them. maybe GB 10 through 19 will do that?!

there are some shortwave radio samples in there, to play on the SETI aspects of this thing.

(and at the end, i brought in the Fitch cello to mimic the opening timbre. that's my frequent ploy of tying a bow around a song by echoing the opening at the end.)

i've been playing my wife's acoustic Gibson lately, and i'm really getting into playing real guitar again. there is a trend forming here...

but playing guitar riffs and chords on keyboard has nice side-effects: easy to repair mistakes, and there's no issues with mic'ing amps and all that. maybe the biggest plus for me is that i need not practice the guitar to perfect a guitar track. my goal is reaching the final result, not how i got there. (i know this is sacrilege for some folks, but hey, we're all different)
