Description
This is the first song that I've written in a couple of months. Just haven't been feeling it; but anyways I decided to force myself to write a song. This is a slow, sad pop psych song. Didn't have as much time to mess with as I would have liked, so it's mixed on headphones. Let me know if anything sounds terrible. The Theremin sound is created with the ES2 synth in Logic, basically just a sine wave with a bunch of portamento and ample use of the pitch wheel.

Hope this leads back into an obssessive compulsion with recording again. Thanks for listening.

it's weird as this started out as a faster song, but I was having some problems playing the intended drum part. i think the synth and the bass are in the same range so they turn into 1 sludgy slow moving beast. thanks for listening.

there are a couple of things I hear now, that I would have caught if i did a second shot at the mix, but i was trying to just pound this one out. for the vox, there is nothing cool going on. i recorded it first take while sitting at my dining room table, and there is a bookshelf next to where i was sitting. i was about a foot from the mic (a crappy MXL USB mic), a little reverb. thanks so much as I always stress on vocals, hard to get a good sounding track.

Cool!
You and Ridd post almost at the same time. Really cool fake theremin, and the cymbals especially sound really great. Nothing sounds terrible in the least. Maybe the drums as it sound a bit maxed out and maybe some hi cut & low cut EQ could clear things up. Maybe a little too much reverb on the vocal. But really nice.

yeah I was thinking the drums could use some work too. i have never really messed with the hi and lo pass eq's, and need to learn. my friend who runs a studio said I should be using them in my stuff. haven't really had much time playing with EZD yet, but they really are cool. Have to listen to the vox again and check out the reverb issue you mentioned (i trust your mixing ears very much). thanks for listening.

Well...
...it is, beyond a doubt, wonderful to hear your music again. I loved this and hope to hear more. You know not to push it. It'll come when it needs to and when you want it. Like this one. Truly a gem, Michael.

Theremin...my brother won a master class lesson on one from some guy who's supposed to be a biggie. He's borrowing my Boogie amp for the show...so I get to sit in. Should be fun. You make very good use of it, here. Nice choice, man.

guitapick said 230 days ago (March 22nd, 2009)
btw
I just read where you worry about being too predictable. I know that feeling...and I have found that, while it's good to work at "stretching" our boundaries (it's important); it's also sometimes counterproductive to worry too much about it. Not to say that you are....but it can make us lose the edge or interest in writing/recording.
I can often tell who the composer is from the first two bars of a piece in the classical world. I know the genre well. That doesn't mean that they're predictable writers. It's just that they have a style. A style that many can relate to. And many of their pieces follow similar patterns, which determines that style.
Hope it's not coming across as preachy. Just sharing something that I (and friends of mine) have observed about composing.
Check out my latest song called Outside the Corral
michael2 said 230 days ago (March 22nd, 2009)
thanks man
i know what you mean about the stylistic thing. when i'm not worrying about things being predictable, I am worrying that I don't have a real "sound" of my own. but for some reason these thoughts don't occur when I am recording or writing: only on listening back to things. all good in the hood, right? thanks for taking the time with this one. BTW, jealous of your brothers prize.

Top post M2
Fantastic melody, and your vocals totally do it justice. Musically it sounds totally solid to me - with the possible exception of the drums. I like the drums generally, but as "real" as the crashes sound, for me they're used way too much throughout the song. Just a personal thing, but I suspect it would be rare to hear a real drummer use crashes in that way.

You do an amazing job of channelling the Beatles - not in a predictable "oh listen, Michael's copied Lady Madonna here" sort of way, but in a way that captures the feel, the melodic class and innovation of their later years. The "sixth Beatle" lives :)

Great post M2 - welcome back to MJ.

appreciate the listen and the comments. you are right about the cymbals. i am still trying to figure out how to be a "drummer" after having used drums on demand for the better part of my time recording on a mac.

there is also the issue of me not being a perfectionist, wanting to just crank things out and (embarrassingly enough) wearing my slip-shod production values as a sort of badge of honor. although i am starting to realize that maybe I need to let a mix sit over night before i decide it's done. sloppy bands sound a lot better than sloppy digital programming for sure. for me the thrill has always been in writing a song and performing it; the act or producing it has usually been left to someone else. i really feel like i have a lot to learn, and comments like your are most helpful. thanks again.

Interesting
Found this quite difficult to listen to - for some reasons the drums seem a little odd - like they're not quite in time. Maybe it's just me? How are you recording them? I love the actual sound of the drums - very warm - and I'm a big EZ Drums fan. The rest of it is great - you remind me here of someone like Jon Brion - very open to experimentation - willing to take a bare-bones song and treat it with different and unusual sounds - exactly my cup of tea. By the end the song is starting to fall into place. You make the Beatles-y bits sound so easy and the ending is sweet. Yep, really nice as always - enjoyed!

you actually nailed it right on the head. at the very beginning of the song, the drums are playing too slow on some beats. i played them by hand, and since i am terrible at editing midi drums, I just played the song all the way through a couple of times and said "good enough." at the time i was glad to have actually finished a song, but on listening back to it, it really sticks out and drags down the beginning. there is a whole bunch of microphone noise at the very end of the song too that i am surprised no one mentioned. i was just replying to Jiguma about how i need to tighten up my whole recording process (i tend to be a really sloppy hack). thanks so much for your kind words on my writing and arrangement choices though. i figure i really was an awful song wroiter at one point and that's starting to come along; so the recording thing should come along eventually too. thanks again.

Damn!
Whoa! This is classic! That fake Theremin sound is off the hook! Love it! The vocals are superb! You are a talent dude. Very tender and "real". I don't download many songs on MJ's but this is going to be one! My only critique, like others have mentioned, is that the drums need tightened up a bit. Oh, don't worry about mixing on headphones. I just read an article in the newest Tape Op about a dude who did his whole album that way. He doesn't even own monitors. You should post the lyrics, even if they are sad. I hope this does lead you back into a healthy compulsion with recording again!

This is a great song to just sit back and chill with. Man or Astroman? turned me on to the theremin and I've wanted to use a real one ever since. I hope this turns into more music for you as well. or astroman? do you remember that tour they did where they sent out like 5 other bands dressed as them to do parts of the tour? very warholian. i have a real theremin and it's pretty close to impossible to play melodic parts with. kind of frustrating actually, i can usually eek out a melody on anything i pick up, but the theremin is a bear. thanks for checking this out.

Late...
.. but not too late. Man, everything you write is a gem - you really have a golden touch, M2. Beautiful tired vocal, and the theramin perfectly matches your singing. Why you aren't a major recording artist is something i'm left to ponder.

This is so cool
Love the feel to this gem! Vocals add ambience and control. Evrything fits well together and nothing is overplayed or saturated. Great job............ Faved' it

Emotions
are meant to be sung! This is so heartfelt and honest, Michael. It's not easy to pour out everything like this, and I'm glad you did. I love the background sounds you used in this.

Hits home
The clarity of your vocals combined with the feeling of your voice makes the emotion really flow out of the speakers. The use of the Theremin which could get pretty weird in the wrong hands works so beautifully here - an inspired choice. Great song all round! If this is what it sounds like unpolished then I'm quite blown away.

Be well,
Doug
