I love you Rachel! (My beautiful little daughter in the picture)

This is a song that David and I used to do in one of the many bands we were involved with when I used to live in the UK.

20 years ago, I also used to sing it to my daughter Rachel sometimes at bed time.

For these reasons alone, it always was and always will be a fabulous song!

This version was recorded by Bryn and Cat during November 2006.

soft floating beauty
and makes me wish it would stay just a little longer, but it must continue on its way, just as all our daughters do, sigh. Very nice and mellow. Perhaps a teeny bit more crispness on the vox, as they were slightly muffled... going back to listen again... hmm... maybe it is just that the harmony tracks are often as loud as the main vocal line, so it is hard for the mind to extract the words... but then, that could be the intent, because the harmonies that are created are certainly luscious and possibly more important than the words :-) I certainly liked the dreamy mood it created.

Yes - a lot of the sound is intentional, but I got there accidently if that makes sense.
What was in my mind as this track started to evolve was the sound that Nina Simone achieved on some of her recordings (such as little girl blue)...Its almost like you are listening to a memory...and that sentiment is indeed very apt for this song

Yes, I agree. This is actually a real acoustic guitar (well 2 guitars - a six string nylon and a 12 string) The sound you hear was accidental (as the majority of the sounds I create are)...I ended up changing the pitch of the guitar track on the original recording in sony soundforge...at first I wasnt sure I liked it but after a while it grew on me so I left it and incorporated in to the final mix

This is a nice tune - in fact it is a beautiful little piece. I think you are going in the right direction with your vocals and there are many opportunities to develop them further. They tend to get a little lost in the mix - something that is easily correctible. It sounds to me like the very first line is a little out of tune with the harmony, which I find to be a bit distracting. Of course I listened to way too much super loud heavy metal when I was younger so it is probably me, but with those minor vocal issues out of the way you have a real gem here - thank you for sharing this

I think Cat's vocals are perfect...its like they are coming out of an old valve radio and have this incredible warmth that totally suits the song...I quite like my vocals as well as a counterpoint to hers. Of course I guess my perceptions of the mix are clouded by my emotional attachment to and familiarity with the song itself...but I do see your point.

However, I rarely strive for technical excellence and try to focus on atmosphere and feeling when I am mixing

bryn, i was reading your responses to some of the comments and what you said about the vocals i think is absolutely right. there is a warmth and tenderness that really comes through in the way both you and cat are singing, and in the way you have mixed this. it's a gorgeous little tune, excellent orchestration. it has a deep, gentle sound that just wraps itself around you.
