well, ive not been having much luck with vocal tracks of late, so i was all set to go and buy a better mic today. Thought i'd ask the old chap about them before i went (he's a bit of a stereo boff- but a complete musical fascist!) Turns out hes got a very nice sony stereo condenser mic hidden away! and theres me wailing into my £15 sanyo with the dynamic response of a baked potato.....

I cant believe how much difference its made. (I also cant believe he really thinks hes getting the thing back either!!! lol)

Ive played about with the drums a bit and twiddled around with the bass as well, hopefully not to any detriment.

Any and all comments welcome. Please!

big improvement!
the drums are nice and crisp now, good work. but the big difference is, as you'd expect from using a decent mic, is the vocals. very clear, and sounding far far more confident. it's a great feeling returning to a tune and making it so much better, isn't it?

Yes!
It is!. After a couple of attempts I'd pretty well given up on being able to get the vocals any better on this track. Only came back to it because i had the lyric sheet handy and i wanted to test the new mic! and bang! 2 takes (for the double tracking) and its done. couldnt believe it.

You're right, the mic did make a difference. Still love this song, absolutely awesome! Great lyrics, great backing guitar parts. I know I said Joel's Wine before, and I still think that, really good work!

Good sound, cool tune.
That MS957 is a surprising piece of kit. I've got one that I've used with a little MidiDisc machine for recording band practices, and we ended up using some as demo tracks! In fact, till you posted this, I forgot that I even had it!

Much Better
The drums sound much better. Try adding a little treble reduction on the high hat. It'll give it that "Real feel" to the sound of the entire drum track. Love the song. Great job love the guitar work and tone.

New mic, new experience
The vocal here now leads the song into new territory. As a dyed in the wool ex-grunger (hell I've even written a song about it) I'm loving this with no irony. The guitar textures are amazing and the mix is superb.
Again great drum work in this tune. A keeper for sure.

sschendra :-) Thanks for checking this out. the drums on this are apple midi loops. i generally just pick something thats close to what i want and then make pencil changes. i find the trick is not to drag the loops to extend them, but to copy and paste as much as i need, then i can add any extra bits as and where i need them, although i believe this makes it quite cpu intensive....

Like the track. Dual, octave and harmony vox parts work well here, guitars are great and the drum? I didn't hear the prior version but know a bit of the saga from the forums and they fit fine. If you do these live, any drummer you give this to as a reference would have no trouble "getting it."BTW thanks for bringing up that "Drums in GarageBand" forum... I'm miserable with drums; you sound like a pro to me. (forum link: http://tinyurl.com/chfte7 ).

anything but a pro! i would have liked to do a bit more with the drums on this, but just couldnt seem to get anything to fit quite right. Glad you got some use from the drums thread, i know i found it pretty useful, especially the simple effects just to give them a slightly more real sound.

Nice Job!
The "cpu intensive drums" are time well spent. Great job of mixing it up! Loved the bass and guitars. That mike is real clear bro, sounds good. The only thing I would change if it were me is the direction of the lyrics. Having said that, you did a really good job on this one. I like the vocal melody too. I could hear this one on the radio here in america. Sounds like you're ready to make that jump.
