Description
Ok, so I made some revisions to this. Much of the beginning is the same, but the ending (beginning with "when it's easy...." on), is very much changed. Let me know if you like the improvements, and feel free to compare to the earlier version. I am open to any suggestions. Also, bonus point if you can name the guy in the picture.

Lyrics
Professor Wilcox likes to read about the workings of the brain,
about blood vessels and veins, about the computers and mainframes.
He finds it hard to sleep at night, he just wants to make it right.
Sometimes it's hard to settle down.
Every morning when he wakes up, he has a splash of gin,
hobbles out the door and has a pint ot Old King's Inn.
It's getting hard to be moral, though he's a scholar of Kant.
He tries not to quarrel.
He dreams of balls and debutantes.
In dusty hallways, in the trees, in cobwebs spun above his bed,
he sees a silhouette, of a graceful, coy coquette,
swirling, dancing, laughing in his face.
At the office, in the lecture hall at the university,
in some quiet corner of the research library,
the laughter is everywhere.
It mocks his thinning hair, it mocks his wrinkled skin,
and his fat and crinkled chin.
In dusty hallways, in the trees, in cobwebs spun above his bed,
he sees a silhouette, of a graceful, coy coquette,
swirling, dancing, laughing in his face.
When it's easy, it ain't so bad, it's never easy, when you're going mad.
His only solace is a photograph he keeps, oh yeah,
inside a box inside another box,he weeps, oh no.
Whatcha gonna do, professor?
When the grades are in, who'll assess your life?
When it's easy, it ain't so bad. It's never easy, when you're going mad.

genre
I love it when someone comes up with a tune that I cant classify. I must have gone through about 10 different Genres in my head listening to this song. At first I thought it was kind of 80s sounding. Then wait. It sounded British invasion.
Then it seemed to sound more indie. Heck I dont know. Great tune though. Suggestions? Maybe a bit more bass on the bass. Maybe a Phone fx on a voice now and then. Or a megaphone fx. But these are just ideas.. Nice job!

Kinks for Today
Thank you for the kink, I think I needed that, very pleasant production in the manner of Davies. I agree with M, the bass line drives and should be more central to the mix (and of course louder). Be encouraged. Good stuff.

Thanks
I'm glad it came across as I intended. I wanted some stylistic shifts in the song, while maintaining a very cohesive sound. I also love the idea of adding some phone fx in parts, and I agree that I'd like to improve the bass sound. Thanks!

Professor Wilcox
Just a good tune. I'm going to be unoriginal, and agree with pretty much everything musichead said, it would add to the final 'production' i think, but is it NEEDED, no.

Great track - really love the range
definitely get a cool Kinks vibe - but there's also a bit of Elephant Six sound here - I guess that's sort of the same thing in a way. But it's really not about comparisons - cause I couldn't pull this off if I tried and it seems you have this sound in your blood. Good for you - it's really interesting. I know that guys face - but I can't place it. Send me a note if you don't wanna blow his cover.

Yes!
I am so glad you said this sounds like Elephant Six, because they are my favorite collective ever (though come to think of it, I don't know of very man others...if any). I especially love Olivia Tremor Control. Anyway, great comments--thanks! And I am going to go through and listen to a bunch of your tracks when I get the chance, because I dug what I heard so far.

I joined this site in 2004, and most of what I posted was...not so hot. Most of it somehow got deleted from the system over the years, thankfully. In 2006, I went to grad school, and I didn't record much music. I only got back into recording and per... [see more]
