Shining Lights of 85

Description
So I had a long hard listen to the demo version and a good think about all the comments made, most of which were very very good. A few people felt the guitars were too high in the mix and that the drums and bass weren't getting a fair crack, so I've gone back and remixed, adding a second guitar and then pulling both guitars down into the mix, pushing the drums to the fore and letting the bass find it's natural space.
I've re-recorded some of the vocals and changed the arrangement a little. I think this is a more satisfying version than the demo in lots of ways and seems to have more "bite". Enjoy.

Lyrics
I remember the times back when
The only baggage we had
Was "The Mill On The Floss" and a pencil case
And a nickname that we hated

Looking through old photographs
I'm seeing familiar faces
The night is young but we're still getting older

She's turning 40 and the only thing that's changed
Are the lines on our faces
Everything else is the same
Whatever you do
Don't look back in anger
All that matters is we made it.

Growing up in a dirty town
The prospects were never good
But the shining lights of 1985 have never faded

Playing those old records
I'm remembering favourite places
We were younger then and somehow so much bolder

She's turning 40....

nice remix
The levels in this version are much better. Everything sits a little nicer in the mix. This is a great song - cool lyrics. The electronic drums are the only thing that would be cool to upgrade, have you ever checked out Drums on Demand or Beta Monkey?

Great song and writing man. Definitely enjoyed it.

Electronic drums...
... the drums are loops I picked up somewhere ages back. These days I would normally use a sampled set and insert with my midi pad but I particularly like the fills on this set. I may consider doing it for a future version.
Glad you enjoyed the song. I'm really proud of it.

Cool
I like this but the initial lead seems to be in a different plane from the rest of the sound bed. Wasn't bad but was noticeable. Cool song!

Better
Thanks Vic. I have a tendency to master my demos on headphones. I've had to get used to mixing on open speakers and I think for the first time I've managed it well here. Time to get some monitors.

oh
yes. i really like this. It takes me back to 1994, with a real dinosaur jr/ pavement feel. guess all my heros from back then are getting a bit older now!

Older...
.. hey I hadn't thought of that. J. Mascis and co must all be in their 40's now, as well as some of those hot girl singers I used to lust after. (In fact the gorgeous Susannah Hoffs is 50 this year if I'm not very much mistaken). Nice interpretation and thanks for the Pavement / Dino Jr. comparison - very flattered.

yeah dude this mix is killer. And I like the elec drums. Very J&MC / New Order - appropriate for the tune. Really like the clear vox and the direct way you belt them out. Very honest.

Sounding good
I like the guitar sound you've achieved on this (reminds me a bit of New Order) - great lyrics (something I don't normally comment on) too. I haven't listened to the earlier mix but this is sounds pretty well judged to me.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the south of the UK in an Irish family. I had always loved music but was never given an opportunity to explore making it for myself. About 10 years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and began strumming in earnest. To d... [see more]
