Sal Nuzzo's Dad Says He Met Babe Ruth, But I Have My Doubts

Description
For the past 5 months I've been living at my mother-in-law's while we saved money and found a house. We finally found one and we're all moved in now. Just today I got home from work and set up the music stuff. Well, at least some of it. My bass, electric guitar and amps are at a bandmates house. But what I did have was enough to put this down. I made it up as I went along so it's structurally ridiculous, which is my favorite part. It's completely mixed on my headphones so I'd be interested to hear what people think is out of place. All in all, it feels good to get back in the saddle. It's almost been 5 months since I last posted a tune.

Quirky
that's what I like about this. I had no idea where it was leading which was cool. But it ends as one of type of tunes that gives someone (or at least me a smile).

congrates on the new home. I was wondering way the long pause of a song from you.

Back in the saddle
This has a total 60's vibe to it. Dig the riff at the break, and then into that synth jam. Reminded me sometimes of VU.

Good post Eric. LOVE the variation. And the fad at the end.

Velvet Underground? Or am I missing something with the acronym? Either way, I'm glad you liked it. It's my first post of '09. I've got a lot of catching up to do.

I think
you have a lot of neat funkiness going on here. Like the title too. I like the "yes" sound and how it has the ingredients of theatre rock etc.

Again, LOTS of very nice theatre rock musical ideas .

Lennon714 said 3179 days ago (March 30th, 2009)
The title
comes from a friend of mine from Eighth grade. His dad was in his 60's at the time, which is kind of impressive. Anyway, they were outrageously Italian. Almost to the point where you had to question if they were doing an over the top impression. Anyway, Sal's dad used to tell a story about being in the hospital as a 5 or 6 year old and the Babe came to visit the children's wing. According to Sal's dad, the exchange went think this:
Sal's Dad "Hey, Babe"
Babe Ruth "Hey, kid"

Sounds legit, but still hard to believe. Thanks for listening to the tune!

it's like
a mini rock opera. Cool post after 5 months. The synth was loud in a few parts but otherwise it sounded pretty well mixed for headphones. Your voice sounds good too. Good luck at the new place.

Synth
Listening back the synth is totally loud for the first 2-3 notes and then softens out. I should have been able to pick up on that. Thanks for stopping by to listen!

Welcome back
I like the acoustic sound - coming across well on my monitors.
Everything else sounds a little 'lite' IMHO - lacking some bollocks (as we say in Yorkshire) - maybe some bottom end is needed throughout (possibly one thing to go when mixing on headphones??).

That aside I love the general thrown together nature of the thing - as always there are a bunch of ideas which have just been liberated from your imagination and lobbed into the mix.

Great stuff and a happy return from you -
Now, don't leave it so long next time !

Good to hear from you. I'll have to go back and try to beef it up. The acoustic tracks actually need some bass reduction because they boom every now and then. But now that I listen again it does sound a bit thin. Thanks for the critique. Always appreciate your time!

Dude this is great.
I don't know man, you react well to traumatizing situations or something because this is so good - well imagined and different and INTERESTING. Guitar breaks, synth breaks, piano breaks, horn breaks, its like pop 101 - and I got to audit for free. Love the fade at the end. Don't change a thing dude this aspires to Brian Wilson. Just keep it as is and be thankful that you thought to create it.

I am actually thankful for it. I just sat down and put every idea that came to me down. I'd love to take pop 101. I could learn to rip off more greats! Thanks for the listen and the comments. It's humbling to know my left-of-center pop tune pleased the king of left-of-center pop!

with lots of interesting bits and changes that keep it flowing beautifully. I thought this was an excellent mix but then I listen to everything on headphones - doesn't everyone these days?
Enjoyed this a lot. great to see you posting again.

As for listening to everything on headphones, I know I do. I do all my my MacJams listening and commenting at work. The mix is alright, but has it's faults. There's another piano bit in the very first section that is almost completely buried. I know it's there but I still can't really hear it. Thanks again for stopping by.

Moving.
It is a pain. In the year 2114 there will be a ray gun that you can just point and shoot at your stuff and it will transfer to your new place. Even that will suck, because you'll have to walk around your house forever. Moving will never be smile inducing.

Your songs are already killer, so don't let me corrupt that. I like the horns, too, but it's impossible to get a good horn sound out of midi. Thanks for listening and commenting!

love the synths in the beginning
they sound kinda like a accordian, which is cool. Really glad you're set up and posting again. this song is another fine example of your ear for good melody and harmonies. there are so many going on in this song but they never clash. LOVE the guitar that comes in at 1:02. Great riff. Then the changeup and the ending is fantastic. Really good acoustic work.
This is really well written and performed. Great post, eric. faved and downloaded.

Passing the test

I love impromptu songs like this that weave together different ideas, taking off in unexpected directions, all seeming unrelated, yet when finished it feels like every twist was plotted - even if it wasn't conceived that way. I suppose that reflects an artist who is comfortable with embracing a set of sounds that are different, yet tangential, to what has come before it.

I would guess it also represents one of those little tests we like to give ourselves, that after a break, we are wondering if the music will still flow out of us like it used to. If so, this passes the test with flying colors. It may not be perfect in all of those factors for delivering a top-notch balanced mix, but that's mostly irrelevant here. The music is alive, fresh, and intriguing ... and it holds up well under multiple listenings.

I was a little concerned what I lost in my time away. I'm terrible with mixing and I originally felt I had a lot that I picked up from the MJ legends. I ended up pretty satisfied with how this ended up. Thanks for the listen and the enlightening comment.

Spending a superlative on this one: Brilliant
This is brilliant, from the performances, arrangement and mix to the title, which grabbed me like a very shiny-flippy lure. The headphone mix seems a little high-end, esp. the bass, but not in a bad way; it has a valid, natural ambience and personality all its own.

But this is one of the mist amazing pieces of pop-art I've heard in a long while. I apologize for not knowing you better. Just wish I wasn't too distracted to draw a line from point a (the title) to point B (its meaning in the lyric).

I had to check this out just because of the title. I do the majority of my work with headphones and have learned that it can be done effectively as long you test your mix out on various systems afterwards. That being said, you did a reasonably good job mixing - it could use some minor tweaking but the song style is so eccentric it probably doesn't matter. You have lots of interesting things going on throughout the song - your arrangement is stellar. Vocals are interesting and there is a nice varied sense to the musical intruments you played from start to finish. Enjoyable toe tapper - thank you for sharing this.
