A little late-Sunday night fake jazz.........

The mix sounds off to me, but I'm posting it anyway. Your thoughts, as always, are much appreciated.

tasty
I think the mix sounds just fine. Feter is right. The walking bass is perfect. I think it really takes off at about 2:55 when the patterning gets more layered and it takes on a smooth call and response tone. Then again at 4:00 it gets more sparse and open. The guitar sample's tone is the only piece I think could be improved a little, and not in the playing, but in the sound of the sample. Maybe it's because I play guitar, but you seem to really like using guitar midi samples in your music and the Logic samples are somewhat twangy. But that is a minor quibble altogether cool and groovy.

Midi
It is definitely the curse of midi: to tweak it to sound more 'real' or celebrate its unreal-ness? Usually, I opt for the second choice because I think the first is impossible, but sometimes, well........

Thanks for the listen, and thoughtful comment.

It needs
To get weirder quicker, I think.

The piano sounds a little dull? Maybe it just needs a tad of reverb - I dunno.
I kind of like the guitar sound but perhaps it could be a bit dirtier.
I actually think I'm listening to this at the wrong time of day. I should have the curtains shut and should have had a few whisky's!

As the bloke of Jazz Club might have said: "Nice...."

Hey, did you steal my dad's old LP?

I am SO in memory lane at the moment... how'd ya do that? Magic discords

The mix? What? Some tiny chime bells in a couple of spots toward the 3/4ths of the piece would give a great add-in, but it's good now.

pull me push me pull me
that bass pattern is like being in a sound booth to test yer hearing
i can envision you standing on yer head to make this
it's not easy to stay focused on this kinda quirky path, but i commend you for doing just that.
my mind is now pitch bent, to boot.
gee, that was fun!

Bass
is a little tiresome, I agree; I just got tired of messing around with the whole project. Sometimes I start these things, and then lose interest about halfway through.

Maybe I should get an intern to take care of those tedious tasks.........?

I thank you, Anne.

bass
sj - bass is ANYthing but boring! i was fascinated by the tiny change in it back and forth - enough to keep my ear glued to make sure i was really hearing what i thought i was hearing. you may have lost interest 1/2 way thru, but not me!

i actually
really like that relentless bass - it's sort of leading us somewhere and won't rest until we get there. I could envisage this as a film score, possibly for a thriller. Great listen.
Cheers

For me
the mix sounds totally OK.
The interplay is impressive.Your guitar sounds deliciously clear and direct.
I reaally like the piano. it´s sort of a restrained and economic Monk with a very steady backing band.
It´s impressive.Your guitar sounds deliciously clear and direct.
But now on a second listen a hear a Angelo badalamenti Feel specially on the second half.
That´s great, Matt.Congratulations!

Monk, is it?
In my dreams!! Yeah, I hear Angelo in there, too; it didn't start out that way, but once the guitar started going in that 'western' direction, Angelo kinda popped out!

Thanks for the props, Carlos.

havin fun
INteresting the notes you play to this. Almost middle eastern Jazz with a reverb halucination. Like how you lead the listener with the bass and when you get used to it you send the bass off on its own then back again. A ride that you need to take again. Its like being on the cyclone in slow motion and when the ride ends you pay and stay right in your seat! excellent!

Cyclone
Thanks for recognizing the klezmer roots in this.

I always change my seat when I ride again; the front car is the bomb at the top of the hills, but the last car is where all the wicked centrifugal slam is.

Dreamy
I really enjoyed listening to this. The very sparse piano and guitar parts work fine on top of that simple bass. Btw, I don't hear anything wrong with the mix. This is not a standard tune, so some idiosyncrasies are all taken in stride by the listener.

One of the liabilities of MJ is the constant need to shift one's gears when bouncing around the site listening to various tunes. You are a careful listener, and I'm very glad you enjoyed this.

great stuff!
instant favourite! puts me in mind of gotan project, with a little more dark attitude and ephemeral movement in it. great chord movements!. the progressive instrumentation is brilliant and seamless, with all the right little notches and spaces in the sound picture. thanks for the download, it will be enjoyed over again in the future :D
