Description

Jack Miller's guitar track for The Front Porch project, this is my entry; thanks Jack for supplying a great base element to make a song.

Jack, I took your track and pitched it down to C so my Honer would work on it.

Jack's front Porch has some great acoustic capacity - almost as good as our shower stall. :-)

This is about my best friend Monica, she actually loves me too. We have been close friends since 1989, we married in 1990. Too bad I can't sing better for her. Hehee.

The lyrics are about one third of some that I wrote for Monica in 2006 - one day I'll finish that song :)

This is what a love song is supposed to be Harold
True feelings expressed simply and to the point. No ambiguity here, just raw honest emotions. Guitar and Harmonica works well for this kind of song, and you did a very good job on the vocal. Also a nice clean well done mix my friend. No reasons to apologize that I can hear. Kudos Harold

Thanks Ed. Jack's guitar track is the saving grace in this song. I had some real noise issues in my garage (where I record) with both doors open in the middle of the afternoon while I did the harp and vocals, but figured that was appropriate for a "Front Porch" scenario. I tried some little bit of compression on the vocal and ended up with some popping I tried to silence out.

Oh well, at least I finally set up my interface and recorded something new after a very long spell (about a year now). Appreciate the remark about the vocal, albeit I think I really suck at that :)

Hi Bill, not sure how Jack had his mic set up. I ended up pitch shifting the track down from D to C so I could use my Honer with it. When I imported the mp3 he furnished, I split the channels into two tracks, panned them each full left & right and EQ'd them slightly off each other. A very small time shift on the right side track seemed to give it more space so there ya go.

what? that happened by using compression !?

i first thought that you turned up your mic
too much so that the signal clipped..
maybe bounce the track and look at the waveform then...if it is clipped you maybe turned up your compression too high..

did you set your threshold and the ratio correctly ??
maybe there's something wrong..
normally this crackling only turns up when you really overdo it..

well, try it out and just tell me what it was..

Hehehe, I like the fact that you are singing on a song titled "Instrumental" :-) We all do our best to reach our "best friend" and explain how much they mean to us... you did wonderfully here, Harold. Great choice of front porch work, and rebuilding the porch down a notch to fit the harmonica into, sweet lyrics for a sweet lady.

.. you probably think this song is about you. ;o) Ok, ok - now the serious bit ..great! I really enjoyed your additions H .. front porch recording is just gonna show up the raw stuff .. and that's the charm, 'innit? I think you sung this very well .. and in context the harmonica is perfect... comes in a little hot... and perhaps the guitar is a little over treated for my tastes (in the getting it down to C - so I understand)... and it has this reversed thing going on all the way through: which I might have tried to use more sparingly. Fine lyrics- even at 1/3, heartfelt .. and Dylan-esque delivery to my ears .. but s'prolly your accent to my Euro ears. Overall it's got a great feel- nice to hear anothers take on this (I didn't listen to anyone else's until I finished my own ... catching up).

First I'd heard of it
I hadn't seen Jack's invitation until seeing your submission. Very neat contest idea. Almost like a LIOLI, but with a live track.

I think you've done a wonderful job with it. I like that you detuned the track, even if doing so may have introduced some artifacts that are easily overlooked. Your harp is a nice accent used in just the right spot.

I think I join everyone else in saying your voice is perfect for the message. You may not be able to sing in some holy tabernacle choir, but then we're not at church. We're on the front porch.
