Description

Our keyboard player presented us with a song based on this chord sequence - I decided to funk it up a little and changed the beat, the lyrics and just about everything about it really. Thanks Bill :)

It's dedicated to our bass player Peter, who is learning (and pretty quickly too) the instrument. He has a habit of wanting everything written down, and our drummer and I are constantly at him to "feel the beat" instead. Playing with real people in a garage is a heap of fun, and in a roundabout way I owe it to MacJams that I've been able to do it again.

Anne Cozean kindly agreed to do some "girlie chorus" stuff for me on this. Anne knows how much I appreciate her helping out on my tunes, and hopefully has a bit of fun at the same time.

All instruments are me (the kit was played in, drum by drum, hihat by hihat, cymbal by cymbal on my trusty Yamaha PSR300 midi keyboard, as were the horns and B3).

No its just a Logic Studio instrument, but it does sound kind of nice I think. I've always wanted a B3, but the size of them made it unlikely that my wife would ever think it was a good idea. The fact that I can't actually play keys (in the live performance sense at least) never came into it - I just wanted one. Now with Logic I can play whatever I like really. Much easier than lugging a real one around.

Anne does such great vocals. The first time we worked together on one of my tunes I think I suggested what she should sing - I don't do that any more as she always nails something so right for a song. I feel very blessed that she sings on my stuff at all.

The drums were not that difficult to do. I simply sat at the keyboard and on the first pass played the kick drum only - second pass, the snare etc until the kit was roughly done. Then into the "piano scroll" in logic and some pencilling (and a lot of rubbing out!) and it was there. Best part of course is putting in the crashes, fills etc.

I've played "air drums" for so long that it comes fairly naturally ;)

Glad you liked this one. This is one I started mixing by setting the drums' volume and worked from there to get a balance. I think the vocals may have taken over a little at some stage. I can still hear the cymbals (crash and hihats) at the right level, and the kick is fine in my phones. I think the quietest is the snare and I expect that's a result of it being pretty much on the same beat as the rhythm guitar. Ah, the joys of mixing - a black art if ever there was one.

I'm wondering if you listened on phones or speakers - just as a reference for me for the future.

Even now on my first listen to the MJ mp3 I'm hearing a different sounding mix to what I uploaded - vocals big, horns very big. I guess there must be a lesson in there somewhere.

so i listened on in-ear phones, which are very neutral to all frequencies..and my first thought was that the drums are just a bit too quiet. well, it's just like everything comes together..you mix your file perfectly, bounce it to an aiff for mastering, bounce it again...convert it to an mp3 for the upload on macjams...and then what you hear is just...ugly..i think mp3 is such an awful format..it makes your songs sound so cheap..well, the reason for that is that mp3 "delets" all the frequencies above 15.000Hz..when i'm listening to AACs i don't hear any difference to the original AIFF..hm..maybe macjams should start to support AAC also..it's a really great codec...
and yeah, mixing is taste..everyone tastes different..but what i meant with drums too quiet..i think modern music shows us how drums should not be...because of all the compression, all the limiting the peaks get destroyed..and when there is no peak anymore, there will be no loudness coming from the drums..we just remembered this sound..and we like it...but i think it's way too quiet. limiting and compression takes away the peaks, it destroys the punch of the drums...the brain cannot recover and gets tired while listening to modern music...well, that sound we remembered we want to reproduce cause we now like it...but just listen to older records..do you notice how loud the drums really are?? and this will be my goal for my new EP, to make the drums sound again as they really sound...loud and powerful...this is why i "complained" about quiet drums..hope you understand me now..!!

It's never just that simple with you...
Kind of a quirky fun melody and beat, Sir. A bit of a different sound for you. too. Talk about who's Mr. Creative... I was thinking this about you the other day... You truly are a man of many a different sounds, all original and undeniably, you. But there's this other thing that you do w/ your music that I interesting, too. There's almost always a lesson to learn... Your words tend to be pointing someone or, the many and the few, including, world leaders and sometimes, just yourself) in "the obvious" "better direction". As in, "this is Neil's reality check station"... or it's a message being delivered with a, "come on, get with it" tone... My favorite of your less than subtle messages is - "are ya gettIng that you're the only one working it in your mind like this, do ya think there's a clue there"... attitude. Sometimes the tone is with a, "did ya really think that would work" mood to it. I almost always hear irony, your lack of more patience", a bit of sarcasm, humor and last but not least, often it's been your own humility that we're to know. Maybe just me, but when I'm about to listen to one of your tunes, I know that most likely, I'll be entertained by the offering of information/knowledge that mostly, you're just wanting to get off your chest...

Now how do I respond to that!?!

Dion, we've been "virtual friends" here for a long time now, and all I can say is that I enjoy every single communication that I have with you. Sometimes they are short and sweet and other times they can be short essays.

As far as my writing goes, I think I've reached a different stage to maybe a year ago. Because I'm playing with a band these days I'm tending to write more for them than myself. As a result, I'm moving pretty solidly into more "danceable" music, and music with less crazy chords than previously. I'm also shifting from acoustic to electric guitar as my main writing medium. The writing periods happen less frequently, but to me the songs are getting better. The other aspect of the band thing is that I'm really enjoying the musical cameraderie of learning songs (not just mine) with other people who are in the same room. We have good equipment and the best beer fridge you're ever likely to see, so rehearsals are a much anticipated event for us all. And, considering that half of us have never gigged on the instruments we are currently playing, it's also a nice challenge.

There - answered one set of words with another. I wonder whether we covered some similar ground :)

Great rhythmn, nice and tight and so good to hear the girlie chorus, the drums are spot on and I love the guitar lead when it comes in, great playing and a great tone!

I keep imagining doing this live and having a blast. One of my earliest bands (when I was around 19) would have suited this perfectly. We had - for a few weeks - an awesome horn section which would have just ripped this apart. Unfortunately, they were brilliant and we were average (on a really good night!), so it never reached maturity.

Ah, the band
Although, apart from Anne - or "Miss Annie" as Coop calls her - this is all me. We haven't really taken a good look at this yet at "band camp" (my daughter's expression for where I go on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays), but it should sound pretty good when we do I think. I'm starting to accept the way my vocals sound after a very long period of doubt.

Didn't mean to be presumptuous. I get the "band" idea in my head. I guess it's just a "band" song... I think it would go over very well live. Good luck either way! On your voice... no really it's awesome. I'm not saying it's like Dylan where he's not, well, actually technically good but you get used to it and learn to love it. Though I am reminded in some weird way of Dylan. It's not like Lou Reed, though I am again reminded in some weird way of Lou Reed. It's just your own style. You are very fluid, totally on key but in more of a silky, talky kind of way. It's a cool style. Run with it!

Now that I think about it, "lose yourself in every song" could be my motto :) I do get a little obsessed sometimes, and this one has been a song I found particularly hard to leave alone. I now have a new obsession, which will hopefully up once this one has had a reasonable run - some serious tweaking still to come.

Some things...
..are worth waiting for? ;) This is REALLY groovie and really well put together. Has a lot of Tom Petty'ish-feel to it, which is not a bad thing of course. First, the bass; wow! Second the vocal: wow! Third: Anne's backing vox: WOW! Fourth: The guitar! Fifth: The key's! Sixth: The Song! It's rock "n" Roll, but in the mellow school, story-telling - sounds like it was recorded live. I could live with a bit more B3 on tis one personally, on the other hand it blends well into the mix. Overall, this is so f-ing great! I am also glad to see you use the universal: "clap your hand and move your feet"! :)

..... did you like it ;) Mikki, this goes down as one of the best ever comments on one of my songs - thanks so much. I'm really pleased you enjoyed yourself. I'm a little disappointed that no-one mentioned the cameo role of the handclaps after "clap your hands" though :)
Certainly one of the best songs I've doe so far - funny, because it started out as a rehearsal track to work out a bassline for Peter the bass player for the original song by Bill the keyboard player. I liked how it turned out so much that I just kept developing it to the stage its at now.

just a gorgeous song
Radio stuff, for certain - anne was a great choice for backing. This has everything in components I enjoy in a big hit.

Very humbly, I would offer this, my Nit - the mix is way too hot, you lost most of the dynamics in the parts and elements that make this a super song by using the mastering you have chosen.. "Wall of sound" is what you have. Easy to ignore this moron (me). But you really need to take a longer look at what you're doing in the mastering settings. This has very little depth.

I just did an A/B test listen of the mp3 - one in iTunes and one in Quicktime. It sounded pretty awful as an mp3 in iTunes, but much much cleaner in Quicktime. I hadn't realised there could be such a difference.

Maybe there's some other explanation, but the mp3 waveform is definitely not too hot - lots of dynamic space in there.

If you're listening to a downloaded mp3, run it in Quicktime instead of iTunes.

Love the funky rhythm on this. It's kind of infectious and make me wanna get up and dance, (no mean feat at my age). Anne's additions work really well and I'm impressed by your one instrument and part at a time technique. It worked really well. Man is there nothing you can't tackle musically, this is great, lyrics and all.

Wonderful composition. Backing really groovy and professional.

But I would have liked to hear you take out more of your natural voice. Hope I haven't missheard you .. maybe this IS your natural voice .. but somehow to me it sounds like you are dissimulating your voice .. making it more dense .. Excuse me a lot if I am misstaken, but if I'm right I feel sure that you'd have a lot to win here by being your natural!

I have been thinking about this for a while now concerning your contemporary songs, but haven't been able to put words to it until now. I'd be happy if you send me a note after and if you have replied to this because I really want to know if I'm misstaken, and how you feel about what I've said here!

Thanks for the listen. I was interested to read your comment, and have thought about the "making my voice more dense" idea. For quite a while I used to double track my vocals and delay the right hand track a little - this gave my voice a "thicker" sound, but lost clarity. Recently i've been using a pretty mild Ozone setting on my vocals. I thought that sounded more natural, and couldn't really hear that it sounded unnatural. I have a new track in the works (at mixing stage in fact), and I'll try to address your comment and Harold's above in the mix. I'm away from home for a little while at the moment, but will listen and experiment with my vocal some more when I get back.

Good to hear from you again, and I appreciate your advice/suggestion/observation.

I love the overall sound of this... I know nothing about mixing, but it sounds to me like a fantastic mix... everything is so clear, and fits so well with everything else. You did the drums one instrument at a time? Wow! That is REALLY impressive... you obviously took a lot of care with this, very meticulous, and it shows. Fantastic work here!

Feel the beat
I feel a bit unoriginal saying how groovin the beat is to this tune Neil, but, that's what this tune is all about, isn't it, the groove, feeling the groove; feeling the beat. And it is built all around that premise: great rhythm, funky bass, poppin horns, the cool chick backups, and a sassy lead vocal and lyric - it all comes together and you have, well, a really groovin tune! Nice job - well put together - thanks for sharing this.

What a great groove this has. The bass and drums just power it along, and the guitar is lovely. I think the vocal works very well, and Anne's lovely singing really adds to it. I think you really have a way with words; your lyrics really use nice imagery ("leave your cage" "a cold white page") to perfectly illustrate the story of the song. Terrific sound - this is really nicely mixed, and it sounds terrific. Nicely done. Feeling the beat indeed! Very cool. Peace.
