Description
this one put me through the ringer for the past several weeks. constantly changing parts and lyrics.

anyway, i started thinking that the old music heros I use to have don't seem to invigorate me as they use to. Maybe it's the classic rock radio stations that have played the same songs into the ground. or something like that.

Lyrics
Lost Idols

so long ago I wanted to be like them
so many years ago I could count on them
where have they gone

where are my heros
i believed everything they said
where are my idols
it's been years since I heard from them

way back then I learned so many things
way back then I pulled so many strings
where are the heros

where are my heros
i believed everything they said
where are my idols
it's been years since I heard from them

they shined so bright like the stars in the night
we fanned the flames, extinguished overnight
where have they gone

we killed our heros and burned them at the stake
we worshipped our idols we really made a mistake
where have they gone

where are my heros
i believed everything they said
where are my idols
it's been years since I heard from them

I'll remember heros now and then
but these days I no longer need them

Vic - this song is huge
From the backwards opening through the massive drums - you have outdone yourself. This is another level altogether. Do I hear backwards backing vocals? Amazing layers of guitars and excellent lyrics, vox and production. You really hit this one out of the park.

Thanks Kevin
good ear. yeah there is a backward vocal. I used it more as a effect, as the same with the reverse guitar. It kind of adds a interesting texture i thought. If I remember right I think there are 8 guitar tracks.

I kept changing stuff mostly the verse sections. man, this one took way to long to get it to this point

high energy from the git go...

heroes.... heroes....? heheh, some of mine are here at MJ. You continue to amaze and entertain me. There is so much to like about this song. The guitar heroes singing... the great arrangement and your ever sophisticated vocals. Great stuff. And after all, it is about providing your audience with good entertainment... this is. Great one Vic.

Jack.

Too much itunes
I think there is so much music available, that it kinda becomes devalued.... present company excepted. A great big slab of rock - this is massive but subtle - I cant even begin to understand how you produced this!

Know what you mean VIc
Same 10 bands - same songs from each band - over and over again! Alt and Indie is where it's at - but even that gets dry sometimes. This is a great song - love the driving guitars - and your vox is really firing here. Enjoyed!

well, not all 8 at once of course. production wasn't to hard i had that planned out before i recorded. but i kept changing the tracks to the verse sections. the first one was acoustic, then the second was to riff orientated. or who knows?

Word...
...what does me mostly about this tune is the choice of words and the way you've strung them together. Now I can reminisce and fill in the blanks with your poetic take on the trip back and not feel at all incomplete about how the time and space has been tagged. And I'll be rockn' my system to your construct of this little mind trip while dodging the crinkles in my mind about it. Really, I'm not kidding at all, Vic. I tend not to go back in time unless I can know a lesson learned or at minimal, be able to put to rest, all "things" that might cause me to feel less than, closer to good enough if not at least, a thorough sense of, contentment about the ways I've gone about getting through it all. (even I thought that was a long one)

Guitar, bass..., the usual, "up there" in par but dang!, sir, you put together some drum licks that banged it out on this one! As my nephs would say, "it's tight, dude! Tiyeet, I say...

Thanks for tuning my "go back" machine. All is better now - Dion

i had another set of lyrics and vocals in place. But there where reasons that i decided to drop them. on these lyrics a lot of them were vocally improvised, scribbled them down then redid the vocals. i try not to dwell on the past but sometimes you look around and and wonder... hey where did everybody go? here you can go back to the past and return safely :)

Mostly dead/recycled/under new management...or something like that! Ha ha...

Good questions...Great rockin' tune...

Love all those guitar change-ups.

You've really nailed the drums on the last few tunes Vic. (Kevin called them "massive" this time out and I fully concur!)

Glad you endured and didn't shelve this one bro!

kind of proggy sounding at times.
I really like towards the end, with the soloing over the cool sounding riff - that really rocks.

every guitar
was set up a bit differently.

the end was really stripped down compared to the rest of the song. and the solo was a mild attempt to get the early clapton warm tone with the neck pick up and roll off the tone a bit.

Man you've got a GIANT sound here. And it's danceable! made me want to pogo. And your solos are in a happy key (and that last solo rips dude)! What gives?

This is just filled with cool bits - love the backward vox and the "where have they gone" vocal styling. The best rock tunes leave you sitting listening to the silence after the last note and that's what this does, great job cool tune.

pogosticks work best
it started out simple enough. but things just sorta happened. I haven't really done many solos for a while, so i was due.

the "where have they gone" vocals are simple enough. i just went into the automation re-panned then out and around and set a high pass filter frequency to around 900. a clean alternative to a megaphone effect

Heroes fade...
... aww Vic this effin' rocks! I don't even need to mention the music 'cos there's nothing someone like me can tell a guy like you. Great chops on the guitar solos! I love the way they evoke countless classic rock styles without ever being a pastiche.
The words man! This is such a big topic for me. Since they day I learnt Morrissey allegedly cheated other members of the Smiths of royalties, all my rock castle walls crumbled. As a teen I looked at Bono and thought "cool" now I look and think ... well let's not spoil the mood!
Heroes man, you eventually have to become your own. And you have.

Ahhh...there's the rub : )
That's the problem with pedestals - human beings lose their balance from time to time. You sift the information for yourself and find out what is true for you, then you become the hero of your own story. : ) I love your last two lines. You put into words a very valuable life lesson. And as usual the music is wonderful!

my comments...
Are that a) I think this is great, like I generally do of your stuff. Cool subject. I know how you feel totally, music has become almost boring due to sensory overload. I'm kind of an "originist" or something like that. I went to see BB King the other day and I loved it. But I wouldn't love to go see some 18 year old acting like BB. Not right! One of my big problems with music today is, where is the originality? Even myself I struggle hard with this. What is new to do? In the end I just do what I do and hope it's ok. That's what you do also, it's obvious. But though your Idols (and mine) are lost... clearly they are singing out WITH you, from the past, embedded in what you are, as surely as your mother and father are. Go figure!

we take up..
.. and carry the torch. since no one at this site has to think commercially they are free to explore without boundries. how cool is that. i don't think the public in general really knows what is going on and whats available in like a site like this one.

Heroically driven
The melodic guitar transitions and timing changes (or just added measures/beats) are captivating - grabbed and held my attention to drive the song onward. Excellent, excellent transition hooks and of course a rock-solid performance overall. And it works great when you double it (with an acoustic guitar?) for extra shimmer. I'm jealous of what you've done here.

This would work great in a playlist that also includes "Senses Working Overtime" from the XTC album "English Settlement," which for me was the height of that band's musical talent.

Lost Idol
Remindes me of Spirit, fluid playing and experiments with structure, maybe John Locke is missing... Guitaristic construction with a nice drum track. Production on the whole is very clean and sparkling. This is a bright sounding track which is at odds with the subject of the lyric, very cool...
