I Wish It Was You
© 2009 Racerat

I wish it was your hand
Brush against my leg
I wish it was your mouth
Force itself on mine
I wish it was you sitting here
In the back seat of this taxi
On the drive home tonight

It wasn’t your lips
Found their way to my neck
It wasn't your breath
Sounding full of desire
It wasn't your touch
Up and down my spine
It was just someone wasting my time
Wasting my time

Not what I expected
And that's not a bad thing. I really like what you've done here - working in a different vein than usual. Very effective mood from the bass and piano - excellent feel in the vocals and the lyrics say it all. Cool post.

eclecticism
Hey Kev, Like to mix it up. Been in a jazz mood recently. Coming out of the rainy season here in SF and the flip flop of the wipers sounds like the beat of a lonely heart.

beautifully done melancholy! Nice job on the piano accompaniment, and the use of "down tempo" here is very effective to get the "lost love" wistfulness across. great job racerat!

Mag
Can't compare to your keyboard work. I am ham handed when it comes to the piano. This was cobbled together out of 3 passes at the keys building what could have been done on one pass my a competent player, but hey, ya can't do everything well. Happy you felt the sadness... melancholy can be such a warm blanket to wrap oneself in.

Thanks DP. I kept fighting with myself to keep it sparse. It's always such a temptation for me to fill things up and build layer upon layer. Glad you felt the pull. Thx.

Felt what this song feels Phil, too many times I'm afraid. Love the melancholy feel of this and how it develops. Very cool song my friend, thanks for sharing it.

Slow and steady. I thought you might like this one. Seems pretty up your alley, stylistically. We all have that one lost love that lingers in memory forever. Tried to capture 'the big empty'. Thanks for the listen.--P

Read the lyrics first
which is something I rarely do, and was impressed by how you conveyed so much emotion in so few words Philip. The music itself did a good job, as did your vocal. Sounds like a sneak-peek at a future classic ;) Some crazy harmony vocals there - I almost expected a Zappa-esque transmogrification into something bizarre, but alas, no, not this time.

Very nicely done indeed.

over and out
Hey Jig, Yeah, I decided to keep it short and sweet. It's so easy for the slow ones to get up into the 5-6 minute range and bore everyone to tears, including me. Just like to make the point, capture the mood and get the hell out of Dodge. It was fun to do, glad you came and had a listen, I always appreciate your knowing ear. Cheers mate, P.

Taxi for emptiness
the flip flop of the wipers sounds like the beat of a lonely heart.... do you mind if I use that line?

You seem to be on a roll these days, buddy. This is a little steam roller of a song, that starts and wont let go. I like how the effect on the vocals gives this a cold, unearthly quality. This is the sort of lyric gets you in trouble with the missus!

Sparse is good
Suitably washy style on the vocals and strings contrasts veddy nicely with the hard piano sound: stabs of regret in the general malaise.... Simple, straightforward and strong. Fine offering!

Thanks bud. While it is certainly great to get comments, I have to say I am sad that more folks haven't found it worth keeping. 27 listens and 1 sorry download, and that was probably my mom... either folks are blowing sunshine or I have built up some good will that I am rapidly using up. I feel so sorry for myself I think I'll go write another tear jerker. Thanks for the shoulder Sonny.--P

Between you and Echoroom tonight...
I think I need to go get an antidepressant... in the big pass-around pack...

As cut-to-the-bone blunt as some of the best Lou Reed... the sort of thing that's cruelly honest at the same time that it conveys something real and almost romantic... And it's describing a real feeling that many people will relate to at the same time that it's not something that gets a lot of songs written about it...

Well done atmospherics on the track and the playing...I sometimes think that slow songs like this are hard to keep a groove going with, and hard to keep on tempo without sounding plodding and lugubrious... This thing moves like a glacier, but a glacier with great, slow, relentless swing... Nice unity of sound in terms of whatever's happening as regards reverb and ambience...

Thanks for long (by growing MJ-one sentence comment standards) thoughtful and kind comment. I appreciate the Lou reference. Keeping the groove going is the hardest part about the slow numbers. Glad you noticed. Steve and I have been on a sad song tack recently, we call each other every morning to find out what we're wearing, too...;-)

Hmmmm...
...this is food for the head isn't it?

As others have said - not what we've come to expect, but rewarding none-the-less!

Those piano chords take a bit of getting used to, but after a while they make perfect sense. Love the drums - but then I'm a sucker for ghosted snares!

More hmmmm.... It's not often I go for an immediate second listen but this requires it I think -

Actually some of the things happening with the piano work really well - those higher notes fluttering around: is it Jazz or what?

Great lyric as well -

Okay, I like it - sends a little shiver down the spine -
Phil

jazz
I'd have to say the answer to your question "is it jazz or what?" I'd have to say, "or what." I really can't play piano, I just cobble the pieces together one pass at a time. I love a ghosted snare too! That and brushes, now that's jazz! Thanks for coming Phil.

Suits you.
I love the jazzy dark mood you created here, and your voice, really impressive.
I feel a bit guilty for my one-sentence comments I'm doing, but I have no much time left to spend around. I just try to keep listening and support the people I really like, including you, of course.

Cheers.

not wasting my time
great, crisp drums and a solid melody.
lyrically, you're sounding pretty guilty there, Phil! ah, but I can relate to that.
I like the piano but I think a little velocity tinkering and verb might get it sounding a little more natural.
the strings were very welcome in the second verse.

ps. more monk chanting!!!!

Danny,
Thanks Man. I appreciate the constructive criticism. Hard to come by around here, sad to say. I agree. I have little patience for (or Knowledge of how to do) a lot of midi tweaking. I'm sure that you are right. I just wish I could actually play piano better. That would be the most help.....;-)

The
The lyrics are poetry, they truly are. I'm a huge fan of conciseness in words and you really paint a world with these lines. Magnificent. Then the music is just ideal. The piano sounds really good to me, and - most importantly - the vocal is really nicely done, with a hint of distance and a whole trough of regret. Impressive. Nicely done. Peace.

DJ
Hey d,
Thanks for your kind words about, well, the words. Also the strokes for the piano. But alas, I think Dan T is right. It sounds a little unnatural. I did the best I could to vary the velocity, but I need to learn more about that I think. I think what I like about this song though is the sparseness. I tried not to fill it up with a bunch of tracks. It needed to breath, and while that leaves me more "exposed" I think it is better for it.---PEACE< P

Hollow that is: your new track. Dark, dark, dark my friend. Dig it. Thanks for the listen. The piano isn't my natural instrument, so this was cobbled together with a couple takes. I can't say soft rock was my target though, that stings...

A thought:
Sometimes the You we desire is the idealized version of the person we have, kind of an ephemeral being that we perceive because we blind ourselves to the reality of the situation. But, I know what you mean. You can't always love the one you're with, no matter how hard you try. And there is no point to taking second best. You took me on a journey of remembrance and understanding. I am touched. Excellent. Thanks.

A true literary short story you can read without any music. Killer words. Show don't tell.
