WOW - this is stunning! it's magical, the way your voices interweave and this idea of using made up words is brilliant. daniel's guitar work in here is so impressive, but mainly, the way all the elements go together just creates something entirely new from the two of you. a gigantic leap forward in your collab energies - WOW! ethereal, haunting, mesmerizing!

very ear-catching music, love the gossamer gauze of musical fabric that lightly illuminates Rebsie's and Daniel's ethereal singing. Quite effective. Nice harmonies and musical sectioning. Evocative artwork too.

Very interesting...
I love the voices and the electric guitar - all rather haunting. I did have a problem with some spurious low frequencies but I can't figure out quite what's going on - it's on both channels and very low...

Thanks Cat, I appreciate you giving it a listen. As much as I love doing the folk songs, I've always wanted to branch out into more experimental stuff. And the voice synergy I have with Daniel is something that just has to be made use of!

Unusual to be sure
Different harmonies. Lovely playing which is giving rise to those low harmonics that Peter commented on. Great vocals too.

Great work guys.

Quintessential transmutation
Well that should have turned some of the guitar strings into gold! Hermetic harmonies and melodious meanderings spun from out of this world. Where do you folks get it all from?
Rebsie said 207 days ago (April 29th, 2009)

We channel it straight through from the Otherworlds and season it with moon magic. Thank you - parental approbation is always good to have!

Obviously
a fav! Lovely harmonies and guitar, and a very fine song to boot.

I'm on my fifth listen now.

I'm not sure if its the same thing that Peter mentioned, but there's a constant, rushing "thrumming" going on which really detracts from the rest of this beautiful piece. Maybe it's a grounding problem but whatever it is, it badly needs a fix. Seems unlikely to be harmonics as Andrew suggested. It sounds more to me like someone hitting their fingers in time on the soundboard of the guitar, as it only occurs when the guitar is playing (in both guitar tracks). I'm surprised hardly anyone has noticed it - its driving me batty.

I'm also hearing a lot of hiss on the guitar (I think) tracks - really noticeable around 1:40.

I don't mean to be overly negative on these collabs Rebsie and Daniel - its just that I know that the quality you are both able to produce (and that I suspect you are both seeking) really deserves perfect recording and production. Especially so if a CD might be at the end of this collab collection.

I'd love to hear a repost of this with new guitar tracks once the problem is sorted - it really is a very beautiful post.

Cheers,
Neil

Rebsie said 207 days ago (April 29th, 2009)

There is a grounding fault on the guitar, yes. It sounds different on different systems (on my laptop speakers, which have bugger all bass response, it sounds blissfully clean!) but there's no doubt it's proving to be a distraction. As you say, we are seeking to produce high quality music and release it on CD, so we will have to fix this up at some point. It's actually the inaugural track for a new shared project which will soon be 'launched' with its own name and a separate MacJams account, so maybe we can repost it there with sparkly new guitars.

I appreciate you taking the time to make constructive comments Neil.

Sorry...
...I am so late coming to this...
A really magical piece. I don't know if there are lyrics. I couldn't decipher any. But it is nevertheless a very beautiful number that is simply orchestrated and which allows the vocal lines to interweave with grace and fluidity. On my speakers -- a big old bass rumble throughout. On headphones it went away. Don't know what's going on with that. ... I felt the number was awfully short and would have liked about a minute more. Lovely sounds that transport the listener to another place. (I am thinking of the little "enchanted forest" at the Castle of Killarney...) Beautiful.
Peace.
Paul

Rebsie said 207 days ago (April 29th, 2009)

No need to apologise, Paul ... we appreciate comments at any time.

The lyrics consist of invented words, along with improvised vocal lines ... a new direction which we're exploring, so there will be more pieces with a similar basis. The bass rumble is, unfortunately, a grounding fault which hopefully we can fix. Very glad you like what we've done so far. Thank you!

Thank you very much! This is the first of a series of songs I'm doing with Daniel in this improvised alchemical vein ... trying to make the most of a very fortuitous synergy between our voices. Very pleased you're enjoying our collabs.

ethereal
This track calls forth many hidden, shy entities out into the moonlight. They dissolve when you look directly at them, but can be seen easily out of the corner of your eye.

The harmonies in this piece are exceptional. It is nice to hear both your voices, which combine well, along with the electric guitar underpinning.

The simplicity of these few sounds is beguiling. The layers are transparent and gossamer. It creates the illusion of complexity but it's really not.

Very nice work, both of you!
