Description
I heard this women speaking in Studs Terkel's "Voices of The Depression" and just fell in love with the way she spoke. This samples that and I added a couple tracks of acoustic guitar, Tibetan bells and violins and distorted drums. There's a fair pit of Pulse Modulator on the drums and bells. Maybe some of these words are relevant today.

Bravo
Wonderful track...No Indeed those words will never be irrelevant....They seem to be a very unspoken, yet common truth...Irrelevant ? No..It just seems, not felt by some,or perhaps they are just to walled in to know how to get it out..Thanks for a pleasnt Sunday moring..JONK

two Ds
You're probably right, I was wondering if it should be 2 Ds or not.
Thanks!

When?
Just curious where and when you heard this originally, although it's a timeless notion, always relevant. I like this...Clear eyes. Thanks James.

Thanks!
I heard this on This American Life. I subscribe to the podcast and listened to this one a number of times. It was in an episode that posted shortly after Studs passed away. The whole thing is much longer but I felt satisfied with these samples as it captured the general sense, I thought.

of music that backs an auduio clip can either propel the message or kill it. This sends it out broad, far and wide. You feel more empowered each time you listen. Cool what you did with the refrain.

Thanks!
I was thinking for a long time about this one, because the whole story piece is a lot longer, and I could have just kept going, I got out the mandolin thinking I would just extend this with a mandolin riff and add more bits of the speaking part but then I didn't want to get too literal. I was trying to distill out a certain feeling. And then I had a busy day and decided to just finish it up like this. I try not to over-do things these days...

Jim
You've been doing this style of post for a while now, combining spoken word with your restrained playing and musical ideas. I like the changes you make to the spoken words and the way the music lends a sense of almost visual space. Taken a step further, it would be interesting to see what some young videohead could do with this.

Raving, sorry - this is fascinating stuff Jim.

I really got a lot out of this, seriously.

My drummer and I have been working on some similar-yet-totally-different themes and approaches and it was extremely cool to hear you do this.

Great!
I LOVE her voice, too, and what she's saying. It's what I've been thinking about a lot in the past 4 years. And it reminds me of my friend, who has a similar voice, with whom I talk about this subject, too.

Thanks for this.

I was here a lot and now I'm not. I decided that being active on MacJams was an enormous distraction for me and wasn't something conducive to my musical life. It's a site that can absorb a lot of time! This is obviously just a personal decision for m... [see more]
