Description
Welcome back kids!

Our challenge for today is....VOICES!!!

I wanted to learn how Garageband voice samples worked and what I can do with them. This is just a short and simple little song that was supposed to be MUCH longer, but...lol...I found it extremely frustrating to work with these voices. There were aah's and hmmm's that I TRIED to get my choir to sing, but those have all been thrown out and we are sticking to just ooh's. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get a choir to sing a good "AAH"???

Thanks to kissmekate and magnatone for their ears and opinions. And for telling me to "STOP MESSING WITH THE CHOIR AND JUST POST THE DAMN SONG!"

YEAH!!! you posted the damned song!! LOL - seriously, i LOVE this (as you know). i'm still slightly mourning the "AAH's", which imho were excellent, but there was no convincing you of that, and as we often say to each other in times like that "well, it's your song!" so, the "OOH's" have it, and they are BEAUTIFUL. as i commented to you recently, you've now thrown down the gauntlet for GB choir quality - sigh - thanks a lot! your achievement here is very notable, not just for squeezing every ounce of great sound out of your choir, but for the general way this song goes together. i LOVE that cool guitar sound you worked out, and really love how it comes back in at the end of the song, to take us out. lovely use of ehorn and flute, the build is sublimely kassia, and let it be said in front of god and MJ, i LOVE THE FADE! Great work shay!

Ahhhh.... nice experiment... I particularly like the woodwinds behind the choir..... very pastoral on the edge of a guilded morning. Keep doing what you do Shay!

i've been doing a lot of what i do lately - thanks to everyone like you who comes by for a listen to each song! i really fought against mixing the woodwinds with the choir for some reason. tried pretty much every other instrument in my arsenal and wasn't happy with anything. I finally relented and threw the ehorn and flute in there and suddenly all was right with the world. Glad you liked this little experimental ditty!

Beautiful mix
Lol. I don't think a choir would have any problem going 'aaaaah'
yet jam-packs. . . well, are jam-packs !
And sam^pled voices have a way to. . .
or rather not to. . .

This said, good work.

Thanks !

in the process of doing this song i figured out all the ways to and not to with the jam packs...lol...i just didn't like all of them so I threw some out and kept others. I'm glad you liked the mix - I always spend quite a bit of time on getting everything balanced and sounding as good as I can. Thanks for stopping by for a listen and leaving your thoughts!

Hmmmmmmm ... this is fascinating ...loved the feel ..you always succeed
to bring a wonderful spirited arrangement to your sweet themes ...
loved the conversations between instruments you chose here ...I can see
how large the sound with the choir ...certainly left me sayin AHHH ... ;-)
good job Shay ...thnx alot for the gem !!!

what a wonderful comment! "spirited arrangement" I really tried with the percussion to make this have gentle movement and energy. i'm glad that worked for you. thanks feter!

Great piece of music. I quite like the choir's ooh rather than ahh, even if that was what you were trying for. Very nice. Did you write the piano part?

Wow,
you have an orchestra and a choir in your spare room. Elegant piano, sweetheart. If you ever want real voices, there are a bunch of us here who are used to doing choral work because of Jack's Big Finish. I thought we did great with oohs, ahhs and everything in between. Thanks, this is lovely.

the choir has been banished to the shed until they can learn their aahs. I have absolutely no idea how I would deal with a bunch of real voices when I can't even whip these little midi choirs into shape. But thanks for the very generous offer! And thank you, as always, for your very sweet words.

You are fitting quite nicely into the new age genre, Shay. Very nice little crescendo leading up to the percussion, and the oohs. The woodwinds add nice variation to your soundscape. I really like how well you are able to match your instruments to the sound, and how you share them accross the melody - clarinet plays this section, the flute plays that portion - very cool. I have got to get myself a copy of that world music jampack. In this case the percussion gives your music a very distinctive flair which fits perfectly with your style. Very nice, if not short, piece of work...well done and thank you Shay for sharing your work with us!

After reading your comment I went and changed the genre to New Age. When I posted this i had absolutely no idea where to put it. It's weird. I'm a child of the 80's so New Age pianists were a huge influence on me growing up. But now-a-days I have no idea really what the definition of that genre is. Or what the definition of any genre is, for that matter. But who cares?? I had a lot of fun doing the percussion on this one. I really wanted it to give the piece some life and energy, a gentle movement to carry those oohs along. sigh...the aahs would have helped do that nicely, but...well...no use crying over spilled milk. the choir is what they is, um, are. yeah...anyway....thanks for coming by and listening and sharing always appreciated thoughts!

i've sent the choir to time-out. I like the melody a lot too! a funny thing about the way I compose - melody is sort of an afterthought. i usually come up with some basic chord structure and kind of throw in a psuedo-melody and then halfway through the composing process i realize - oh wait! i need to actually write a melody! thanks for the listen! i'm glad you liked it.

Why isn't my email notification working?? 3rd lsten thru [ will download .. thanks] and I do believe Paul is correct. You have done well with the JP voices .. about as good as any one could have and I know how much work that involved... kudos. The backing orch is gentle and fits across the stage wonderfully and the wood winds, as daniel
said, really work. The guitar I assuming is Midi Keys?? ... if so ... you managed to keep it believable as a guitar which for me is hard to accomplish. All in all ... will now download and say you rock on this one Shay.

you rock too, sir. the guitar is actually all written into GB by hand, not played on the keyboard. the whole point of these little experiments is for me to just keep learning, and i certainly learned a lot with this one. i'm glad it all came together into a piece that sounds good to you. thank you for your very sweet words jack.

They said "POST IT"
"Enya posted it, good for ya!" :-) This has a little bit of Enya-vibe, but mostly you. There are tricks to making the choir sound more natural... and maybe I can send you some tricks, and you can let the "Aahs" out in the sequel-piece?

This is elegant and calming, like the sunrise. I like the initial shaker starting things off, very nice touch.

thank you! what a great comment from you. as i said in my song notes, i really intended for this to be a much longer piece, and these themes to be interspersed and developed throughout. i'm glad it works as a short piece as well. maybe someday i'll get inspired to go back and see how i can extend it. thank you for stopping by!

Hi Shay.......
This is a feel-good song and it certainly made me feel good whilst listening.... I forgot what I was doing as I listened and then the world came back and I thought 'Oh!!'. Still don't know what I was doing, maybe just lost in thought whilst reading your description and your choir problem.

Maybe you could use the 'Ahh' as a stepping stone to another piece, but in a way that the arrangement fits around the Ahhs. Do they sound OK when sustained?? If they do how could you express or emphasize this with music?? Trigger the vocal loops with the bass or a beat count, or even listen to the 'Ahh' and imagine what the backing could be to this simple vocal lead. Then record the music you heard and listen to how it now sounds with the vocal.

I'll shut up now.

Take care.

Paul

Flowing and restorative music
This is truly beautiful, and the swell with the strings reminds me of the sun coming from behind a cloud. There is a tenderness with how you have orchestrated this that comes through in the delicacy of your choices. I too am working with choirs and have not cracked the secret code (I just got the upgrade for the PLAY version of EWQL Symphonic Choirs and am keen to try it out). I think you've set the bar very high indeed on this piece. Thanks for the inspiration!

Be well,
Doug
