Lyrics
The Fade Away

why would i go?
why would i go?
why would i go?
why would i go?

hold me in your arms and tell me why
hold me in your arms
gettin by the reasons why
gettin by
only in the waking dream of more
only in the day
tell me why you goin out the door
tell me why

why would i go?
why would i go?
why would i go?
why would i go?

falling through the sky into the clouds
falling through the sky
asking why we are the way we are
asking why
and we always say we're gonna go
and we always stay
tell me why you goin out the door
tell me why

why can't i see you cry?
why can't we reach the sky?
why do we dance this way?
why do the fade away?

This is...
a tune I am gonna play in the car while driving. For some reason it just seems to be tune for cruising down the highway. Very cool vibe. Now to get a car with an mp3 player in it. Seriously, this is a very good song on all counts. What i like most about it is that it's different. I think I understand why you chose "other" as a genre. D/L for sure.
Peace

I think it is about our short time here. A lot of questions we will never have answers for. I enjoyed the listen. And, a very cute picture, too. Thanks.

The Fade Away Just Fades A Way
I dig this piece, right where it should be and doing an important job. That outro fooled me badly, I thought you had written a bridge and we were going someplace new, maybe next time. Thank you for this gift, please make more soon.

This has a really nice feel to it. Very relaxing with a slightly 70s feel to me (I'm thinking 5th Dimension meets Mamas and Papas).
Is that your grand daughter? She looks so much like mine - maybe they were mixed up at the hospital ;)
Cool post Bill.

for me personally, this is a very bittersweet song. my grandchildren make me feel like i'd like to live another, oh, 80 years. but it's a dream...

or else, this is a song about a relationship that never quite took hold, and is now falling apart...

70's? it's that wurlitzer piano perhaps... certainly not the singing! :)

thanks

Excellent song Bill
and one I can relate to. I don't have any grandchildren - but my daughter just mailed in her college acceptance and will be moving to Portland Oregon in the fall. That's a long way from Brooklyn. This is from a recent email regarding higher learning and the Socratic method:
...opposite to religious orthodoxy, the question was elevated above the answer; there was nothing that was exempt from questioning. This capacity to privilege inquiry over solution stood as the necessary prerequisite for finding the truth.
Now as to the music - I think your voice sounds great here and the arrangement clips along with a really cool energy. I like how the opening chord sequence reflects the tone of questioning with the hanging chord.

that hanging chord thing fell out during early arranging - i had considered smoothing it over, but it seemed to work - in a way it's not actually hanging at all - it's the dynamics, not the chords. i think it influenced the development of the lyrics later on.

seeing your children venture out into the big world is both thrilling and frightening. enjoy the moments - but you know that!

thanks

Great production on this, and some excellent vocals. Kind of a strange arrangement, but it just seems to work, with the unusual combination of sounds and rhythm. I like it Bill, thanks for sharing it with us.

Fade Away
what a GREAT tune for the motorcycle playlist! a couple of weekends ago we were on a weekend motorcycle trip and cruising along the columbia river, some hang gliders were suddenly overhead swooping and soaring just above our heads. it was spectacular, and THIS would've been the perfect soundtrack to it! very fun groove bill - you always make the most INTERESTING music!

i recently watched a vid (on youtube i guess) showing a sequence almost exactly as you describe - the viewpoint was from the air, not the ground however. now that i'm typing this, i wonder if that vid influenced this song somehow?

the song structure reminds me of "Sweet Dreams are made of this" Eurythemics... I like how your mind works... the skydiving video seems appropriate too..

i liked the Eurythmics a lot! and "Sweet Dreams" in particular.

i've imagined several times what mixing that with "16 Tons" would be like - "you load 16 tons and whaddaya get?" ...

structure

several comments here have gotten me thinking about the structure of this song. i must admit it was purely intuitive when i put this tune together, with my usual disregard for traditional structure. but here's my take on what's happening from an analysis perspective.

at the lowest level of chords and melody the song is:

abbaaaaabbaaaaccccdcccccccccccc

grouping repeats of vocals, it becomes:

a B a A B A C d C C C

i would label the first "a" the "teaser" - the idea being that if you hear the song again someday, you'll hear the main hook right up front and instantly recognize the song. the second "a" is a mystery to me - perhaps it's a brief intro of some sort.

due to the lyrics, i would label "B" the Chorus, and "A" the Verse. if you're listening for the first time, it's reasonable to assume that C is a bridge. so we get:

teaser - Chorus - intro - Verse1 - Chorus - Verse2 - bridge - d - ?

however, "C" is really just a stripped down version of "A" and very soon it evolves right back to being exactly "A" except with different lyrics.

i'm not sure what "d" is either. i did it as a brief break before the song charges into the hook full speed heading towards the fade out. i did a fade out because of the lyrics.

so "C" ends up being like a Chorus typically repeated a few times for the ending, yet it's actually the chords of the Verse.

what does it all mean? i dunno.

please don't ask about the lyrics... i have even less of an idea what *that* was all about!

I like the synth whole notes. It works well with the moving vocals..
You seem to have the same type of lyrics I write. The hissing I hear at the start? is that the wind?

your own style
You are a master at what you do, the more I hear the more clear it becomes. I was captured by the lyrics here. I understand that you aren't sure what they mean, or at least I think I do. I think you are reaching for the meaning yourself, and the act of reaching is valuable in itself. At least that's how I relate. On that note...I think a lot about "cliche", and, I don't think I believe in it. I'm actually not posting this thought directly related to this song, I'm posting about comments I saw on another song and the thoughts in general I'm having as I listen to music today. But to go on, you might say it's cliche for me to breathe, to love, to cry, to wonder. Doesn't everybody do that? I guess I just think there are some core principles, ideas, and experiences that can't be cliche. Whatever words in English are used to describe those things are bound to be reused, but who cares. They are core to what it means to be human and to explore, enjoy, endure, and ultimately experience life. Don't know if that is useful! Hope so. I sense that maybe it might be??. Thanks Smokey.

i do try to avoid cliches when i'm aware of them. but, as you say, our lives are constructed of cliches in a sense.

Right....
From the great forgotten Mamas and the Papas album that they did with Brian Eno....

This sounds and feels great, Bill... Simple elements, and has that 'just enough' quality...

I really like it... I bet I'm going to really like the sound of that bassline in the ol' earbuds
