One Bright Day

Description
For months the overcast skies hung like a shroud. No longer to hold it slipped away in the breeze. Only to be replaced by a lightness of being. Radiating light and warmth. They came out to bask in the glow and heat. By the end of the day wearing their sunburns like a badge of honor.

I was rummaging through a old art file of unused art. and came across the art that i've placed here. the client for the project wanted something pink floydish. well long story short he did a card himself.... black text on a postcard printed at costco. sheesh

Lyrics
One Bright Day

they came with smiles on their face
you watch them wash off the gray

one bright day
holds the mist at bay
one bright day
never went away

they returned day after day
until the flesh melted away

one bright day
holds the mist at bay
one bright day
never went away

one bright day
holds the mist at bay
one bright day
never went away

turned away from the setting sun
through these eyes i follow the sun

one bright day
hold the mist at bay
one bright day
never went away

one bright day
one bright day

Vic, gosh I love listening to your songs. I can't comment on anything tech-like... I'll just say this sounds scrumptuous, tasty, full of ear-candy throughout. Thanks... keep up the work. You've got a reputation to protect and live up to now. No resting on laurels now... ;-)

3 thumbs up!

was the artwork the inspiration? Kudo's either way. I love the textures you paint with your guitars. the big mellotron finish was a treat as well. Nice one

a little of both
i originally had just the first chorus line written down before i re-found the art that i did 3 years ago. i forgot i had it. so the lyrics went down quickly at that point

usually i stay away from choir sounds but it seemed to fit the feel of the song.

... behind the curve they are!
brilliant bump by Dadai. Glad I did check it out. Such an original, bold and well put together song. Love the vibraphone (is it?) and simple but effective structure of the song. Artwork and description give the song a lift and additional meaning. Vocals blend perfectly with the guitar/synth backdrop. Cool stuff, but what did I expect - I mean seriously - was Yoda EVER wrong!?

Pink Floydish
Your art could easily have been from a Pink Floyd album. Cool detail with the girl in the school uniform. Working as a designer myself I know how frustrating it can be if a client makes you spend a lot of creative time on a project, just to find it runs out in the sand...

Your guitars are top notch. You place each of them in the mix so there is room to breath for everyone. The talk box fx is something I haven' heard for a while. Cool:)

congratulations
on one (another) bright song. I've always wanted to try a talk-box. It sounds cool here. You may want to know, or may not?, that today I decided to go see if you have any albums for sale. I'd buy it. You don't though, that I can see. At the rate you produce quality material you could easily put out an album a year chock full of only the BEST Vic Holman material. Though you may be wise enough to figure chasing that rainbow isn't worth the trouble. That's ok too. Your sound is ethereal but quite distinct in that way, owing mostly to your voice which you claim has about a 5 note range. Well, whether that is true or not you use it to excellent advantage. If I had to market you I guess I'd try to put you somewhere in the field of U2 meets Cure meets Dada meets RadioHead meets the man himself, Vic Holman. Your music is very accessible yet fresh and unique, individual. In Album format I was thinking the Vic Holman Effect would really get a chance to reach full steam, and I imagine really sinking into it. Thanks to your generous outpouring of downloads, I can still have my VH CD soon enough, and to you I just would want to say thanks.

It's been raining cats and more cats here in fact I can hear the downpour right now. This is really cool - love the music! Your creativity is killer!!! : ) We've got some flower seedlings growing in peat pots on the back deck - when they were downstairs in the basement under the grow lights (pretend bright day : ) ) Boots and Artie mistook them for a salad bar; ate some and dumped the rest all over the floor!!! We spent some time re-potting and boy was JD pissed!!! : ) The porch furniture is out and I'm waiting for a sunny day - bye bye winter! : )

The last two songs of yours are really shinning tunes.
Again the electronic drums and the synth fit nicely with other instruments.
Also, this is a neat production.Very clean and crisp and there is pleanty of room for your voice to shine (it´s also some of your best vocals).

I don't know...
...what it means, but I very much like the SOUND of this piece and especially the little "bends" you do on the word "day"... This is a really energetic number that strikes me as sort of minor-sounding but with a pulse and drive that somehow gives it an optimistic glow. I was just listening to the Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour" and your composition reminds me a little of the style of several of those number. ... Glad to hear this number, Vic. You did a great job writing, arranging, and recording this.
Peace.

the Beatle thing has come up quite a few times in the past. But, I grew up on them, so that is something that has been ingrained into me i guess. Which kind of brings up another point about the word "day" Lennon would do that a lot as well, especially in his solo days.

Ironic
Interesting (and cool/ironic) that you give a song called 'one bright day' a very dark, almost sinister quality; I really like that. Good song. I tend to agree with VD above about the drums; it might be cool to use some occasional very low, boomy drum shots, maybe using samples of those huge "Taiko" drums they use in Japan, if you can find them. Just a thought.

A relatively simple mantra worked into a fine, dynamic composition. It's very catchy; I'll probably find myself singing the title line over and over in my head... infectious. About the art... very Hipgnosis. Remember that firm? They did a lot of Floyd art, also Zep's Presence album.

Punchy!
Sorry I'm so late to this Vic - have been otherwise occupied lately. Fantastic sound - clear and punchy, nicely mixed and recorded.

If ever you get a chance I'd be interested to hear what settings you use on your output track in Logic. You have a clarity I still can't achieve. Are you using compression on the way in?

Vic's comment about the drums may be correct, although I always enjoy a little high end sounds on bass instruments.

This is one of your best recorded tracks I think, and the song ain't too bad either!

Hey Neil
I hear ya, so much to do, so little time.

I'll drop you a line in a day or two on my output settings. I think you will find it to be a pretty easy set up.

Sounds great, Vic...

love the
attack of that guitar line right from the getgo. this is so originally a vic holman jam, but it reminds me of some great qualities of a few of my favorite bands. great job - this one's a keeper

vic
how did i miss this one? love the guitars and the monk singing in the back ground. so lush, you do some lalala's in here too I believe (and some synth work). very much a Vic Holman classic style tune, but you're also expanding on your sound. how did you get that talk box like effect? frikkin cool.

I just
listened to the track by Billy Kirsch and was blown away, only to find your forum post after it. I'm equally blown away. LOVE the vocoder. This is lighter than the Billy Kirsch track, but I sense some similar musical leanings.

Not to prod, but you two should collab!

The mix is fantastic. nothing stuck out at me as way off. The drums work but I'd love to hear this with a live set. The blending of synths/bells etc with the guitar and vocals was flawless, and everything worked together really well.

very impressed!

Very original
sounding song. This almost touches on surf rock and spooky rock but somehow doesnt quite do it. Elements of Beatles and Animals. Glad I read that forum post. GREAT tune. Best I have heard in a while.

Nice
This is very cool man. The composition, mix, production, vocals, everything fit like a glove...Do you master your stuff, or is it studio engineered? Sound choice was excellent. Impressive all around. Def a fan, i'll have to check out some of your other stuff.

Vic
I wait for it... 2 weeks here without sun and winter just starting...

That mellochorus sound creates reverberations of depeche mode in my head. So cool. Same for the guitar arpegio/riff, but I can't get the source this time. You mixed your gazillion influences in a blender and then came out with something so original.

Lot's of little things that come and go: that kind of whistle (I think is the vibraphone) around 2:36 made me turn my head to see if somebody was calling me; then that sort of shh sound around 1:19; the lalala; the talk vox; the acoustic guitar... a saucer full of secrets.

BTW: Is there a cameo in the artwork?

Guitar textures are great
I loved all the guitar layers going on here. Each guitar well recorded and distinct. Nice work.
