Description
this started as an exercise to write a song around one line - "if you let him go" - I recorded a whole backing track around it and figured I'd finish it quickly. wrong! I sat on it for several months before I finally figured out what it was about. once I did, the rest came quickly. I'm glad I finally finished it but I don't think I'd do it this way again ;-)

Lyrics
there's a picture in a broken frame upon the table
it's a fixture in an endless game that you enable
in the hall of shame it's a lie when he puts himself above you
if it's all the same, will you realize he doesn't love you?

in the treetops, in the meadow, weeping in the willow
turn the lights out, pull the shade down - honey, hug your pillow
it's a hard life - it'll beat you down if you let it
it's a sharp knife that'll cut you, baby don't forget it....
if you let him go

if you let him go...

you're such a fool if you let him go
(are you such a fool if you let him go?)

it'll drag you down, make you out a clown if you let it
when the day is done and the war is won, will you regret it....
if you let him go?

if you let him go....

process
Brian,
I know what you mean. I like to shake up the usual song building process now and again, too. It can throw you for a loop can't it? I think your efforts weren't in vain though. As usual, a tight, wonderfully crafted rocker with your trademark harmonizing quitar leads. Well done. Thx. --P

Worth the wait!
Loved the texture of that section before the last verse. Really a lot going on that deserved another listen. Also the vocal performance had a measure of passion that gave the song some real punch. Great work Brian D

It not the clever songcraft
and great song construction with the perfect riff that grabs me in the end... it's the passionate and believable vocal... but the sum total is excellence..

this pushes all the right buttons

thanks for the kind words. I did get a little dizzy on the sustained "go" at the end. it required more wind than I had in me ;)

Enjoyed this very much
This is such an excellently written and performed song. It has bits and pieces of all my favorite elements. GREAT dynamics.

You should be quite proud of this piece.

Mighty good work.

hi brian.
was i really your first fan, how your profil shows...?
if so, i know why!
your kind of singing, your voice... so strong, so beautiful. and: are you your own backround (...its a hard life...) or is it an fx? .... however....
"If You Let Him Go" is so catchy... in every second, in every terms.
especially i like the crossfade of your voice in the last verse.
and to begin to talk about your guitar-playing and and and.....alas!... i´ll save my breath, because its better to listen to this, then to talk to much about... /after d/l/ ...

wonderful song. really.
best from berlin

you're #1! :) - that's a harmony vocal overdub on "it's a hard life...." the drum parts are built from loops, the rest is me. glad you like it. I tend to put those "white album guitar stabs" in a bit too much, but it fit here since "sharp knife" is actually in the lyric. thanks for listening!

great tune
some songwriters are very talented, some have a great voice, play an instrument very fine, have some great composing talents.
you have that all!
plus the most important talent: TASTE.

Cool, cool song
This has a unique sound battle going on. Like someone did a mash up of Elvis Costello and the Stones. This is so good it makes me want to punch the wall and cry. Joking... kind of :).

Fab
Came here on Len Gold's recommendation and am sure glad he sent me....this is a fab power pop number. The vocals remind me of Ken Stringfellow from the Posies. Performance and production on this is just perfect

If you let
This is very nice. I had a similar problem a while back on my song "small town downer". I started with a basic chord progression, tempo, and some "la" harmony's. These ideas came first and I figured that the rest would come to me but not so. I eventually chucked the song away with the current state of it. Man you've got a great sound!
