Description
As a kid growing up in a small town, one of the highlights of summer was when the Carnival came to town. Sounds and sights of a summer night.

Lyrics
Big Ferris wheel lights up the summer sky
The dizzy whirl of people passing by
Carousel plays a tin-pan alley tune
Shrieks and laughter, cotton candy, and popped balloons
We’re almost there… the velvet air
A mullet-haired boy in line with his goth-eyed girl
They’re buying tickets on the Tilt-A-Whirl

Midway barkers hawking out games of chance,
You can hear the pedal steel driftin’ in from the country dance
Wood chips on the muddy ground all wet with beer
As the halter top girls pass by all the bikers leer,
A lost boy cries and rubs his eyes
Neon streaking by in a pinwheel blur
Another spin on the Tilt-A-Whirl

Steppin’ over babies to find a good spot at last
Lyin’ on their backs on a blanket in the cool wet grass
Fireworks burst overhead like acetylene
Flowers of crimson, gold and candy green
Blossom there in the black night air
Over on the blanket, the mullet boy and girl
Take another ride on the Tilt-A-Whirl

sweetness
This is a wonderful song, beautifully crafted melodies and harmonies, excellent lyrics that paint in vivid colors, and great playing and singing. Other than some liberties you took with the written lyrics not matching what you sang (both versions seemed OK to me), I have not critiques, very smooth enjoyable "slice of life."

This is such a universally nostalgic tune. We're all there, whenever that was. This is such a phenomenal piece of restraint. Not a note is wasted, and your vocal work compliments the arrangement extraordinarily well. I really love the building strings at the end. Beautiful work, John.

i really love your stuff and your style. you are so honest and organic. i feel like i could be sitting in a coffeeshop or a living room or outside in some field watching a midwestern sunset or around a campfire. there is a sweet simplicity that speaks of universal experience, touching my heart and sparking a million memories. this is wonderful.

Excellent and atmospheric! Nicely paced- there's plenty of time for the listener to imagine the scenes. I certainly did! Well chosen words carried by an appropriate and gentle tune. A song to revisit, like the memories it describes.

Just so happens our local County Fair's in town next week. Got me prepped for a nostalgic visit with my grandkids this weekend! Very nice, indeed.
