Back In The Tunnel

Description
I have for some time contemplated doing a thematic sequel to my earlier “Tunnel Vision,” which was so well received here at MJ.

Actually, I’ve contemplated it ever since Bill Grundmann (SmokeyVW) quoted the entirety of the lyrics of “Tunnel Vision” to me in his reply to my infamous “Farewell” Forum several months ago. (Thanks for inspiring me bro!)

I composed the guitar music soon after I left MacJams. Recently, life slowed down for me just enough so I could concentrate on penning the lyrics and getting guitar, synth and vox recorded.

Heartfelt thanks to Daniel Staniforth (Lunatrick) and Alec M. (Relic67). Their generous contributions have added life and color to my insipid little ditty.

Thanks also to Vic (Wonderfingers) Holman and to Richard (The Lionhearted) Schletty for lending critical ears in the early stages of production.

Hope you all enjoy this second helping of maudlin self-recrimination. Ha ha...

Musicians:

Micheal Wark (Calchas): Lyrics, Vox, Synth, Acoustic Guitar, and Mix.

Daniel Staniforth (Lunatrick): Cello.

Alec M. (Relic67): Violin.

Lyrics
BACK IN THE TUNNEL

I.
The Sun it shines,
like it always do;
a darkened cloud
blocks it from my view.
Can’t see it,
---back in the tunnel again.

Right is wrong.
Wrong is right.
My principles have all
taken flight.
Oh no! I’m
back in the tunnel again.

What is that writing on the wall?
Is that my signature?
Was it I
who placed this call?

Sorry honey, if
I upset you.
Feelin’ trigger-happy
and a little blue.
Same ol’ song n’ dance,
---back in the tunnel again.

II.
Light is dark.
Dark is light.
I’ll be sleeping
by myself tonight.
Blindsided!
---back in the tunnel again.

Crossed the border
to Myopia;
on my way to
Paranoia.
I’ve earned a ticket to ride
back to the tunnel again.

Won’t you tell me what to do, my love?
I yearn for light,
and to be with you...

Lying fallow.
There’s no help for it.
I’ve sowed,
now it’s time to reap a bit.
It’s no picnic, here in the tunnel again.
So very lonely, here in the tunnel again.
I’m so damn blue, here in the tunnel again.

Tells the story
of love lost and regrets felt, very well indeed Micheal.

Love the back tracks along with Daniel and Alec's work. Adds a dimension of sadness that would have been lost without their efforts.

This is an awesome song my friend and you did an amazing job on the vocals for it. Deep, meaningful lyrics that say what you wanted to say, without bludgeoning the listener over the head, which is hard to do, but you did it.

Love it my friend. Kudos to you and your mates on this one.

Convincing
Your vocal style is well suited to this genre. Excellent lyrics, and you conveyed them very well -- it was believable -- didn't come off as contrived, in other words. The inclusion of live strings added much to the melancholia. Nice, in an "I'm down" kinda way.

Too modern
to be mistaken for something from the Hootenanny era of the 60's but the vocals and strings by Daniel and Alec wring out every last bit of emotion just as some of those ballads were able to do.
Now's the time. Make it right. Stay a longer while in the light. Make your way out and hope that that tunnel will end. Thanks, Micheal.

Nothing wrong with your playing bro. I'm just not used to mixing organic strings! The cello wants to take over and dominate till it gets run through a Low Cut Filter and a Compressor. This is realy one of those songs where Everything blends so well and creates the perfect mix. Every instrument is heard and has it's place but takes nothing away from the goal. The Tunnel
This is a great song! Oddly enough it reminds me of the Moody Blues - that comes from both your vocal performance as well as the arrangement. I really like the idea of using violin, especially in the intro. I also get the feeling that this tune means something special to you - some life experience(s) is driving your lyrics - very heartfelt performance. While the cello playing adds ambience to the piece I would like to hear the cello and violin share the solo - I think the song style works for that kind of idea. But hey, it sounds great the way it is as well. Another fine posting, Michael, and hats off to your supporting cast - well done! Thank you for sharing this.

RE the strings: The only instructions I gave to Alec and Daniel was to follow their own notions of what should go where. I did ask them to get a little frisky in the mid-section though. It's one of the things I enjoy about collab-ing. Each of the other players ends up being more than a mere session man, but a true contributor to the over-all vision.

Glad you enjoyed it my friend!

There is always light at the end of the tunnel....
..... otherwise its a cave. : ) This is absolutely wonderful, Big Bro, Daniel, and Alec!!! Mike, you're hitting the high notes very well on this, and I just floated away on your musical magic carpet. The lyrics really gave me pause - as human beings, we've all been there more than a time or two. "Footprints" (poem). And Daniel and Alec, your contributions really added key elements to the music's perfection! Kudos to the three of you!

Blindsided me again!
I have to admit you slipped out on me when I was just getting to know you, and now you've slipped back and - again - I'm blindsided. But I have to give you credit for the little things (sideways-rhyming myopia and paranoia!) as well as the big things here. The "big" being an outstanding bit of songwriting and performance to match. Clean guitar on something like this requires a precision many of us (okay, I) have trouble with. And your voice is clear and strong. Some of the hummed harmonies in the background could come down a bit, although they're still done very well.

Loved it!
Michael,
Always fun to listen to one of your tunes. Aside from the thoughtful lyrics and interesting, well played music, I always hear our similar roots in one of your songs. Especially when they harken back to the fabulous days of psychedelic music. The chord progression and violin on this one had me thinking back to a rock festival in Baton Rouge in the summer of 1969. It's A Beautiful Day wowed me that day and this song did the same. Really great stuff here, loved it. Relic blew me away with the violin and you did likewise with the songwriting, vocals and guitar.

Tom!
It's been awhile bro!

I never did get to see "It's A Beautiful Day" live, but I really dug their music back then.

Alec's violin does evoke some old memories for me too. I was very lucky to get him and Daniel to play on this song.

I'm glad to see you posting again. There's just not enough Tom Bronco about these days for my tastes!

Be well friend!
