You are
celebrating the little gizmo that not only soars by takes pictures of everything below. I think I saw a demo of that thing somewhere. Such a heroic sounding piece, Smokey! Thanks.

actually, i was celebrating how butterflies manage to fly so gracefully, and yet they are incredibly tough survivors

the picture seemed to fit in an obscure, yet meaningful way

thanks

Nice piece Bill
Comes on slowly but when the fantastic sounding Organ hits it get really awesome. Then i quiets back down to let the piano and cello /dbl bass do their thing and build it back up. Love the flute trills in there too.

Like I said before Bill this is a nice piece of work my friend. Kudos

i was having some fun with the title - mettle > metal > iron

that soaring flute part is note-for-note the same as the guitar part

thanks

I really liked this. Layering a series of musical ideas onto a simple repetitive pattern (ostinato) is a simple but effective approach to writing music, and you've done a very fine job here of layering on ideas that are necessarily ones the listener expects. Good ideas, and quite original ones too. I was not crazy about the second sound you use - the fuzz guitar-like sound - it somehow fit less well than the others for me. I liked the way you all the layers suddenly stop around the middle and we hear the original ostinato on its own again, and I also liked the second buildup, and the fact that it was different from the first. One thing you could try, if you're looking for other things to do with this compositional approach, is to not make all the layers line up so squarely with the original one; in other words, if your original idea is a 4-bar vamp on a major chord followed by a 4-bar vamp on it's relative minor, you could layer on ideas that don't always break down into a 4+4 pattern... maybe some could be a 3+3+2 pattern (or 3+2+3 pattern, etc.), or even a bunch of 3s (3+3+3+3...), etc. Or use mixed meters; e.g., the basic pattern is in 4/4, but some of the other layers are in 3/4. Just some ideas to play around with.

it is an obstinate little ostinato isn't it?

i had built up a little loop of parts and it kept growing - i meant to work on some "glue" for another project ("States") but it took on a life of its own.

so i kept with what it was - doing two buildups happened since i had some rock sounds and some symphonic sounds - they each needed some play

you suggest some great ideas here - i will keep these in mind as i go forward

thanks

That thing
is modeled after a toy that I saw and used to play with in 1965. In Bangkok, Thailand in the public market a man had crafted these flying sticks... They sold for about 2 baht (like less than a cent I think back then). I had hours of fun spinning that thing and letting it fly. One day it soared up, the wind caught it and the next thing I know it sunk into a klong (water way) and there was no way I was goin in after it knowing how dirty that water was.

Very cool tune Bill!

we had some of these in our office - they were a trade show give-away - not with the camera though!

the concept of flying drove this piece - that pic seemed apropos

Fly it does
and never comes down. A very uplifting track. I have no idea what you are or are not playing here but it all comes togeather so well. This is like a victory song or a song of achievement and that you have done. Thank You!

mostly just playing the computer here - the opening keys line was played live, but it all expanded from there on GarageBand pencil mode editing.

i tend to think of myself as more of a composer than a performer anyway...

thank you

Dang! Can't find my net!
Bill this is WONDERFUL!

The heavy guitar sounds were unexpected but cool. This piece has both a certain delicacy AND power.

What a pleasant surprise to come home to this after work today. Thanks for sharing this bro!

Be well!

This is pretty unique. Kind of reminiscent of eighties music in my opinion. then it explodes into an array of nicely put together symphonic elements. nicely done

Eclectic, at best. I learned some music theory at school, and read a ton about it since. I've listened to lots of music over the years. I once played guitar in an actual garage band and actually got paid to play! Once. Although live performance is an... [see more]
