Tasty
Tasty slice of surreal electronica. The main arpeggio-like melody gives the first part of the track a subtle hip hop nuance, and when it kicks back in around 2:35 or so, layered with that Indian style melody, the whole track sails away. Lovely stuff. If I had one nit, it'd be that I'd like the closing bars (complete with ethereal voices) to be longer. But that's just because I'm a glutton for a good hook. Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.

Yes, Very Cool
Um.. but how does one pronounce the title? Not that it matters. I've downloaded your piece and put it on my playlist.

Thank you.

Bill
This is very nicely put together cryptic puzzle - kind of like a wooden puzzle that falls together bit by bit despite not having a clue what you're doing (I mean that in a positive way).

I'd really like a little background on this Bill - technique etc. It's so outside what I do that I'm wondering even how you came up with the ideas.

A very enjoyable listen.

You had to ask!

This was all done using the "pencil tool" in Garage Band.

As an experiment, I turned down the sound, and using "deaf clicking" I randomly created some notes in one measure - call it "a". (I intentionally did not try to imagine the note pitches, but some intuition probably snuck in anyway.) I did another random measure call it "b". I copied and pasted the notes togther as aaba to form a four measure chunk call it "A".

Then I repeated that entire "deaf clicking" process again to form a second four measure chunk call it "B".

Finally, I stuck all that together to form a 16 measure piano track: AABA.

Then I turned up the sound to hear what I had. My personal challenge was to take that essentially random theme and turn in into something musical.

I let it mull for a day.

Things I remember doing: I started from a loop Tigris Santoor 05 and cut it up, modified the notes and timing until I got something that sounded reasonable.

I also started from a loop Beachside Drumset 03 and added some random notes to it, moved notes to other instruments, shifted their timing, and deleted some notes.

I let that mull for a day.

It was time to the arrange it.

Eventually I decided I needed a bridge. So I returned to the random "deaf clicking" process, but this time I formed a 16-measure theme flat - no aaba/AABA structure to it.

I needed chords to back it up. I did that mechanically. I copied all the themes into a new track and then dragged all the notes that appear in each measure to the beginning of the measure and stretched out their lengths to cover the measure. That formed a sequence of "chords" - albeit very strange chords. Then I shifted the chord notes up or down by whole octaves to form various "inversions".

Then I arranged it, settling on AABA / AABA / bridge / AABA / BBBB

All this stuff got copied and assigned to various instruments purely based on how they sounded to me. Here and there I tweaked things that sounded rough between the measures I had pasted together. I added bass guitar very late in the process.

For final mixing, I copied the drum tracks into multiple tracks and split apart the percussion intruments into their own separate tracks. I panned and EQ'd each one individually, and solo'ed each one to look for wierdnesses. I changed the velocity on some notes and shifted their timing a little here and there.

Rather than having all the drums play all the time, I cut and deleted portions of the drum tracks so that they gradually build up during the section before the bridge, and again for the section at the end.

Somewhere in this process I decided to shift the timing of the last two notes of some of the A measures: it broke up repetition.

I also realized late that the bridge sounded too random. So I broke it up and formed a 32-measure bridge out of the original 16 measures, like this: 1234 became 11223344.

In this case, the ending was worked out last.

I tried to listen objectively to get a sense of its "feeling" - to make up a title for this beast. I vaguely considered something related to Turkey (the country), but it wasn't gelling. The sense of alien, inscrutible, and cryptic took hold. So I went with that. I don't want to spill the beans on the meaning of the title and description yet, but there's some puzzling to be done; I even hid my signature in it...

Interesting piece Bill
Starts out strangely, (from my perspective) but gets into some very interesting moods and rhythms. I don't know what else to say about his except that I like it, a lot.

Nice piece Bill

So glad you broke down the process
I love it when you do these theory pieces - they're always interesting and sound just great. I wish I had the time and patience to do this sort of thing - it appeals to me so much. Excellent choices of instruments - and deciding what to leave out and leave in.

this project has got me thinking again about making a songwriting tool. a lot of the process was mechanical and could have been sped up significantly by letting the computer do the little transformations.
