Description
Recently I posted a song called “You Are My Friend” (http://www.macjams.com/song/52492). I was pleasantly surprised at the reaction I got to the new vocal style I experimented with on that one. I specifically wrote this song so I could have another crack at singing in that style.

Imagine---if you will---Bread attempting to cover the Beatles’ “Across The Universe”! Ha ha...

I was fortunate enough to snag some of MJ’s finest for this one.

The boys in the band:

Calchas (Micheal Wark): Lyrics, Vox, Bass Guitar, and Mix.
John Stebbe: Piano.
Vic Holman: Acoustic and Electric Guitars.
Andy-bm (Andy Mackle): Drums and Percussion.

Heartfelt thanks to the three of you, but especially to John Stebbe, whose inspired playing carries this tune! (I think it was quite brave of John to hook up with three wild men like me, Vic, and Andy, don’t you?)

Hope you enjoy the tune folks!

Lyrics
TIME FOR ME TO GO

I.
It’s time for me to go.
I’ve had a lovely day;
just spending time with you.

We laughed until we cried.
No matter how we tried;
the tears kept coming through.

After all the things we’ve shared;
it’s a wonder we still care,
the way that we do...
And it’s time for me to go.

II.
Well it’s time for me to go.
You know I’d love to stay;
but I must be on my way.

Outside the light of day;
I hear it call my name...
You know you’re not to blame.

All good things come to an end, my friend;
if only for awhile;
I know I'll see you smile again...
But it’s time for me to go.

III.
Well it’s time to leave, my friend.
Our love will never end,
though eons come and go.

The big wheel’s gonna spin,
till it comes ‘round again,
to start another show.

Though we’ll be parted for a little while;
some day you’ll see
that you and I
will be laughing once again...
Now it’s time for me to go.

Hey...as far as I know I'm not leaving! (Unless, of course, I lose my job an can't afford to keep the internet. But even if that happened I would leave my account up and return a.s.a.p.)

Glad you enjoyed this. Now I've got to get crackin' on some rockers before folks start thinking I've been castrated or something! Ha ha...

And how about John's lovely piano playing?

Hi Char!
This is the first song I've ever recorded where I only got to sing and play bass! Ha ha...

The guys each did a wonderful job.

RE "in a mood": Well...I'm worried about losing my job, and am still suffering from mysterious physical symptoms. Things like this get a guy thinking you know...

Glad you enjoyed it my friend!

Glad you dug it.

RE the ending: There are any number of ways to end a tune like this. Over the years a standing complaint about my tunes has been that they're often too long. I've been trying to discipline myself to get in and get right out again. It's actually much harder!

Nice tune Mike,
a decent, slow ballad to think about love and love`s ending.
Well played, especially John (I`m a fan) and also Andy.
I would have done some other guitar phrases, but that`s just personal taste.
Vic did a solid job here.
One thing left to say: In such a slow ballad it`s very important to set some strong points, some dynamic spots to fill the stream with life.
It`s not easy, I know that, but we don`t want "easy", do we? :o)
Congrats on this good one!

Hi Ingo!
I appreciate the nice comments.

RE "strong points" etc. I'll take that under advisement. This isn't the type of music I usually do. Been going out on a limb lately trying new (for me anyway) things. So you must forgive any amateurish indiscretions my friend.

Great collab... this got me to thinking of when my sis was alive and we put exfoliating masque on our faces and after it dried we could hardly annunciate our words... we had been having a conversation about how a comet was about to hit Jupiter and in the end we were saying, ' OOO - PUTUHr' and we began to laugh so hard we started crying.
I could say more... but I will say - it's as if the lyrics are from her, right now.
thank you
Andy

Son of Schmilsson?
Micheal, I can't believe that's your voice; it's beautiful! OH WAIT, THAT CAME OUT ALL WRONG! No, I mean it's just this side of (heaven, where) the most amazing singer-songwriter and pop pianist ever: Harry Nilsson. Speaking of Nilsson-esque:John, forgive me, I didn't know you were here--your part, center-stage just behind the vox, is perfect in every way I can think of, down to your "velocity." And wow, Vic, you held back and compressed more than usual--but it's very appropriate. And to round it out, of course the drums and percussion are right in the pocket, Andy, not showboating but supporting the song in a musical, Ringo/Keltner-like. All of which leads me to congratulate you, Micheal, on a fine mix, and all of you on a heartfelt song that, gee, I imagine could apply to someone who left .. and recently returned to a large, online and very musical family...

I enjoyed this very much. Your vocals are perfect on this, Big Bro. : ) It's a lovely song, and the lyrics really fit the music well. : ) Back to my project - I'm making two hobby horses for a friend's wedding - guess they're going to ride off into the sunset, and their real horses weren't allowed in the church. : )
Calchas said 170 days ago (May 22nd, 2009)
Hi Carole!
Thanks for the props on my vocal. Would you believe it's the first and only take? I didn't even rehearse it. I had figured out in my head what I wanted to sing while I was at work. When I got home I recorded my guitar part (later dropped and replaced by Vic's) and then sang the lyrics over it. Sometimes it just happens that way...

Glad you enjoyed it little sis.

RE hobby horses: They're much easier to clean up after as well! lol

Take care!

You know bro, I never cared much for Bread either; but when I stepped back and listened to my singing after recording this one, they were the first thing to come to my mind. On the other hand, when I recorded "You Are My Friend" I thought I sounded like ex-Fairport alumni Iain Matthews.

I agree: John really aced this!

Sounds great!
Mike, you've created a very nice track here. I am happy to be a part of it. Yes, I can really hear the "Across The Universe" connection. I like the effects you've chosen for the piano -- is that a delay? Cool. I would not have chosen that for myself, but it's neat to hear what someone else 'hears' when they put a track together. Thanks, Mike and everyone else, for the kind words about the piano playing. I think the piano playing here is not any more integral than any other element of this song, but I appreciate the kind words anyhow.

Hello John!
I'm relieved that you like how I effected your piano. I wanted to make it slightly psychedelic in keeping with the spirit of this piece. Yes, it is a delay setting from Logic Express 7.

I think everybody delivered the goods on this collab, but---like it or not John---your piano carries the day here!

Thanks so much for agreeing to do this!

Beautiful song Micheal
Very well, played, arranged, written, and sung. What more could you ask for?

How about a really good bridge to give a change of pace. Don't get me wrong, I love the song just as it is, but I kept hearing this bridge in my mind. Not one I could write necessarily, but I know it needs to be there. I just can't say why I know that. I could hear it but I can't define it for you.

That said, what you have is wonderful my friend, and an instant D/L for me.

Kudos to you, John, Mark, and Andy for a superb job playing it and to you Micheal for the lyrics. the mix and the arrangement,

Be well old friend,

Ed

p.s. Good to see you back Micheal

Hi Ed...
Well, as I was writing this song I immediately conceived of it as the closing number for the current "album" project.

I also went into it with the idea of a short goodbye...A get-in-there and get-out-fast concept. I could have thrown a bridge in, and it just might have worked...but in this case I think that I prefer simple, short and sweet. (That's why there are only three verses instead of four. The piano solo takes the place of the missing verse.)

I also think Vic, John and Andy each did a wonderful job. I've really enjoyed the collab experience of late!

Glad you enjoyed this my friend. Thanks for the nice comments!

I appreciate the kind words bro.

I think your guitar phrasings are perfect for this piece. For some reason I just can't do that Beatle thing. It's not that I don't want to. I just can't seem to nail it. I envy those of you who can!

I would love to do an alternate version with just vox and piano. But first I'd have to get John to pad his piano track in a few places. Hmmn...Who knows?

Hey there Mike - you are really getting this collab thing down. I continually find it to be amazing how you can pull this off. I don't mean the technology. To put 4 guys "together" like this, play music and play it well - together, is truly impressive. And this is a great song - I can definitely hear the Bread connection...and the Beatles. All performances are excellent. You guys should keep playing together. If you do I have no doubt that you will just continue to get better and better - congrats to all and thanks for sharing this with us.

Very special combination of artists here!!! To start it is always a special treat to hear drums that were played and not played over!
