Description
One night my wife and I watched a PBS documentary on Michelangelo Caravaggio. I was fascinated not only by the beauty of his paintings, but of the man himself. Deeply religious but also quite a dangerous man. The Catholic church commissioned many pieces, and some had to be turned down because they were too dark or lacked taste (using prostitutes as models for Mary). He'd often finish paintings and wander the tennis courts of Rome looking for a sword duel. Read up on him, you won't be disappointed.
Anyway, I wrote this song about him. It was originally intended to be from a third person perspective. Like a friend watching him rise to fame but lamenting the danger the painter posed to himself. I didn't quite pull it off, but there are elements of that direction in there.
It has a 'Verouria" sound to it in the chorus, but not enough to warrant a lawsuit. As if Frank Black would ever hear it anyway. Or care.

Lyrics
Going out tonight
Sword drawn by your side
The thugs of courts will know
Of Caravaggio
Gods and courtesans
Born of troubled hands
so all of Rome will know
Of Caravaggio
But the praises that you get
Are going to your head
Caravaggio
A life in disarray
Painting filth and faith
So all the world will know
Of Caravaggio
Tomassoni stole your love
So you'll sign your name in blood
The Sword is drawn the blood is spilled
You stand before the man you've killed
A host of angels gathers 'round
You throw sword onto the ground
Beware to those who dare inflame
Both man and God they will remember the name
Caravaggio
Sword drawn by your side
The thugs of courts will know
Of Caravaggio
Gods and courtesans
Born of troubled hands
so all of Rome will know
Of Caravaggio
But the praises that you get
Are going to your head

a wonder tribute to a medival Icon who in my opinion was way ahead of his time not in his paintings but his aspect on life and how he lived it. A great song I loved it!
