River at Night (Jonk/Tokai)

Description
So a while back Jonk generously posted this very airy ambient jam. He also added a tasty assortment of glitches (random scratch's and such) whilst keeping the whole thing in a taut groove . After adding some piano I sent it to Steve who sent me back some very amazing tracks to work with. It was literally like a dozen or more excellent full tracks to choose from :-) I now know how many open audio files I can use in Pro Tools at one time! Lots of sampling later I hope what I've retained is worthy. It was hard to decide what to use and how.

The title comes about after being in a canoe at night recently and thinking how the sounds dance back and forth from everywhere. One can hear across the water and beyond. This coming together on the heels of a nice summers night paddling back and forth I just gravitated to this tile/picture. Although I wasn't in Hong Kong :-)

Sounds Of
a busy river tinkling and chugging boat engines as they pass in the night... excellent conglomeration of interesting sounds interjected with the atmospheric guitar and piano parts, really enjoyed this, regards M

Maurice, yes, most definitely. More tinkling rhythmic wood for the fire. Appreciate you listening

Wonderful
track guys! John, you did a fantastic job mixing this. What's interesting (in a very good way) is how this sounds so relaxing yet somewhat busy at the same time. Again, nice track guys! (and a definite download too)

Jamming
Smooth jazzy sounds. Subtle guitar, gentle piano wanderings. Great stuff for a sleepy summer after noon....

Gotta love that...
...'unstructured random noodling'... especially avec 'lovely melodic bell overtones'....It just sounds really nice.... There are spots where, at least listening over headphones, I wish I could take a dB or two off off the noise track, but I suspect that some of that may be because it's so solidly midrange and the headphones may be emphasizing that...

I love the piano, and there are some eye opening guitar licks in there and just some really nice ear-candy-ish sounds...

Ed
ktb said 3045 days ago (May 25th, 2009)
melodic bell
lol...makes it sound like i'm putting together a recipe :-) Which at times it did when I'd add flavors of Steve. I agree a db less of the glitch on the CD. I've grown so used to it I don't even hear it anymore!

Bernard, I'm grateful for you taking the time to have a listen. I was hoping that the listener would take some sense of ambience from the piece. Especially since I really didn't develop much of a melody :-)

Yo ho ho
Fine job sir John. Difficult to resist one of your piano noodles, sorry about the files, just the way i work. I always enjoy to work on your tunes, because i just love the sound of a musician that plays piano, freestyle. Cheers Jonk for the having posted this in the first place and for all your help and advice. Jonk has posted many fine pieces for anybody to have a go at.....

Lots of other...
...great comments (above) about this piece. My two cents: love the piano licks throughout. ... I do wonder, though, if there's any use to thinking about a melody spinning out of all of this sound bed. Just a thought. To my ears (and sensibility), the scratches sounded like static rather than an effective part of the general mix. ... You sure have created an authentic atmosphere with this number...um, fade the last guitar chord. Don't just cut it... I agree with your excitement about collaborating this way. Wow. It is an amazing time we live in.
Peace.
Paul

last guitar chord
oops, thank you for pointing that out. Now I realize I uploaded a beta mix. aarrrgghhh
I'm still pleased you liked it. I heartedly concur a melodic theme would help tie it all together.

Super!
Really excellent; it sounds perfect to me! I love the static...it takes the ambience in another direction entirely. Very different, doesn't sound exactly like anything else I can recall. But that last guitar chord! I would have ended on the low piano note at 3:57 or so. Curious choice, that little bit.

water music
great story about being on the water and great execution of that concept...love how your keys careen around - like always very visual...i could imagine sounds over the water but also ambient sounds like insects and the knocking of the paddle on the side of the canoe. must be some kind of feeling to be able to just sit down and 'noodle' like that dude.

Sounds like freedom
It's just so optimistic and open and free. Really nice to hear you out front. I like the scratchy sound, also. Fun for me to hear Steve let loose in this relatively unstructured environment. It could have gone on ... and on. Compliments to to Jonk, as well. I'll have to go check out the original.

Surrounded by life
There's so much interesting happening here - and it all works organically as things come and go, sounds and textures weave, enter, play, and leave. I can understand why you compared it to sounds across the water - it's a bit like listening to snippets of activities of the whole world as they roll in across the nighttime waters. And yet this forms a coherent and forward moving whole with great interest and development under your careful editing.

Tres cool!

Be well,
Doug

Cool textures that almost sounds like they're scratching their way out from the inside of the speakers membrane. What smooth guitars — lovely moods and feeling. The piano plays a vital part in holding everything together and is the safe harbor and reference point in here.

kewl groove!
Great expansiveness with your platforms you two create. Lovely piano, fluttering beautifully like butterfly’s at play. I love pieces like this where both talents are intertwined dancing off each other. Tokai accents are sweet and luscious, then enters the electric vibes of the guitars to end this wonderful piece.

Thank you for this, and for sharing!
