Description
From Bud:
When I started recording this song it developed into a Portishead kind of thing and I'm certain I was influenced by listening to Char's recent work. Her voice has that same emotional timeless quality that I hear in Beth Gibbons. I sent Char the music and she was kind enough to lend her poetry and vocal talents.

A word on the production. Due to a microphone issue Char had to record using the pinhole mic on her computer. I encouraged her to do so - because I thought I could make that sound quality work. You tell me if I succeeded. I cleaned up the white noise with noise reduction in Audacity and did my best to create an atmospheric effect without losing the words.

From Particle:
I lost the words, the drums, the guitars and the bass then I found them again along with a few other things....hope I haven't ruined it!

What I did (in no particular order)

Deconstructed the orignal track that Bud sent to me by isolating all the various elements.
Added 3 extra drum tracks with heavy effects to Buds original drum track and then merged them all back into one.
Cut and spliced Chars vocal tracks and then triple tracked them with various effect sends, keeping the dry vocal sitting on top. I then recombined the triple tracked vocal tracks back into one.
I beefed up Bud's original guitar and bass tracks by using amp modeling technology (built in Logic amp modeling, NI guitar rig and Amplitube 2). I added compression to the bass track to emphasise it even more.
I added a syn bass track which I mixed so that it morphs out of Bud's real bass playing. I also added some little sequenced bleeps to help propel things along. The morse code beeps at the end are from Omnisphere.
I pitched the whole thing down (tone and tempo) so that the original 74bpm track now runs at 62.5 bpm (or 125bpm depending on your perspective)

Guitars, Bass, Drum Track - Bud
Synths, Effects and timewarping - Particle
Vocals - Char

Char is a bit Beth Gibbons like... thought you might run with that at some point. I like this mix a lot!

Oh yeah ......
.... I've been waiting for this !!!!! I like the "deepened Char" ..... almost sounds like "Alannah-isms" in parts ... - Great Stuff Particle ....

The deepend Char
definately has some Alannah overtones, but there is only one Char and there is only one Alannah
Glad you liked - did I tell you how much I admire your Abu Ghraib headware?

Love what you've done here Bryn
Remind me to send everything to you before I release it. Brilliant bits of manipulation and you created an even more goth atmosphere - deep and rich. Love the little pulsing bits and what you did with the bass. And Chars vocal - very cool edit and pitch work - though it would be hard to mess up her pipes. Thanks for the honor of being remixed.

Thanks Bud
Its a small repayment for the great work you have done on the open collaboration tracks I put up. I actually had a lot more ideas for this and think I could have taken it much further...but I really like how it turned out too
Glad you like the mutation I did to your original

Bryn,
are you sure that that's me? I sound like a taller, cigarette smoking, more European version of myself. I miss having my lines in order. I have a license to practice poetry, after all. I play a lyricist on MacJams. I am delighted that you chose to put back a couple lines that didn't make the previous cut. Win some, lose some. I am amazed at the result and yes, the deeper sound is reminiscent of Alannah, not to say that she is taller, smokes cigarettes and is European,.. two out of three, eh? I remember Goth girls in the High School where I taught. Somehow they managed to darken their Catholic School uniform into Late Night Trance wear by their accessories (dog collars, leather wrist bands, combat boots) and their expressions of utter disregard. So, here's to morphing one thing into something completely different. I will pay close attention to the man behind the curtain. You are a recycler of grand proportion.
Nice that you wanted to go all that trouble. Thanks for a magic mystery tour. :)

Bryn it on...
The scene opens... a dark alley with steep walls, fades to brilliant white at the end, and barely protruding from a side doorway, a single slender leg and a wisp of smoke, blown carefully, uncaringly, into the light. Char? Is that you?

Bryn, nice portentous ethereal soundscape, lingering in the air like the smoke in the alley. Bud/Char, excellent building blocks for Bryn's laboratory.

ttfn,
Drakonis

impressive
a lot of little things going on, beautiful little things that still make it a whole. that in it self is imo impressive, but it has more to it. good chord progression that give it an spooky and meandering feeling. love all the elements, but the voice makes it almost perfect. good to see you back. love, marc

the musineer in all of us
great undertone sounds. As well as the use of modification to the vocals to clean un wanted noise. I do warn that often in doing what we do we lose the art of what we do and enter the realm of just getting what we want. You did an outstanding job great sound and production is first rate. (truly love the layers in sound.) But how far did you push the envelope of musician verses a common sound engineer. Please don’t at all be offended by this comment. I too struggle every day with that very question in my works, and don’t always feel the musician wins out. I put this song on favorites and snagged a download of it. I enjoyed it very much, and like I have said you did a outstanding job

Hallo
you know, i find your comments to be very interesting. i have never considered myself as a sound engineer but i have described myself as a sound designer in the past...however i do think that i use the tools of a sound engineer as a musical instrument...but i do see your point that in doing so, the musician may not always win out...but for me, the contribution of the musician is integral to what 'i' do and in order for me to truly able to what i do, i have to be able to rise above the needs/intentions of musical performance...that is why this remix opportunity worked so well.

i have been extremely lucky to work with cat as part of sonicmagpie for the last couple of years....now when we get together, some boundaries really get pushed...because the sound engineer and musician hand books get thrown out of the window completely

:-)

YO
this was crazy good. the quality and mix was superb, top notch on the production side. love that deep bass and the sound of the guitars. the synths were dope 2 loved the ambience behind the guitar. My kind of track, in fact, one of my favs on this site that ive encountered. those synth stabs that run on the one note sounds wicked.

Hi Bryn.....
I'm late again to the party. This is brilliant and all the time you have spent working with the various takes, etc. has stood you well.

I enjoyed the feel of the piece trememdously, and the voice, etc. all sounded perfect, which is what you intended anyway. So in my opinion it is 'complete'.

The varied instruments, both soft-/hard- have come together without any 'joins'.

Take care.

Love this sonic excursion
You are the master of the pitch down, you manage to pull it off so well. Enjoyed this track alot Bryn, its brilliant. Sorry it took so long to write something.

BTW How is the omnisphere? Is it worth the money?

Cheers Keith
Omnisphere is pretty cool and a great all rounder, but personally I don't think its something 'you' need. It kind of reminds me of the old days when Korg wavestations or M1s or EMU sound modules were seen to be the creme de la creme of 'quality sounds'
Dont get me wrong...if you can afford it I would highly recommend omnisphere, but your stuff is certainly brilliant enough to stand up without that kind of investment.
Is there a music shop near you where you could go in and play around with it for a while?

This is wierd cool stuff, complex, layered, I can tell there was lots of time put into this, wish I had the Patience to develop some of my stuff more. I have some projects in files taht are spacey and Sci-Fi like this. But I dont dare submit them after hearing this, I've got work to do!!
