Description
From Bud:
When I started recording this song it developed into a Portishead kind of thing and I'm certain I was influenced by listening to Char's recent work. Her voice has that same emotional timeless quality that I hear in Beth Gibbons. I sent Char the music and she was kind enough to lend her poetry and vocal talents.
A word on the production. Due to a microphone issue Char had to record using the pinhole mic on her computer. I encouraged her to do so - because I thought I could make that sound quality work. You tell me if I succeeded. I cleaned up the white noise with noise reduction in Audacity and did my best to create an atmospheric effect without losing the words.
From Particle:
I lost the words, the drums, the guitars and the bass then I found them again along with a few other things....hope I haven't ruined it!
What I did (in no particular order)
Deconstructed the orignal track that Bud sent to me by isolating all the various elements.
Added 3 extra drum tracks with heavy effects to Buds original drum track and then merged them all back into one.
Cut and spliced Chars vocal tracks and then triple tracked them with various effect sends, keeping the dry vocal sitting on top. I then recombined the triple tracked vocal tracks back into one.
I beefed up Bud's original guitar and bass tracks by using amp modeling technology (built in Logic amp modeling, NI guitar rig and Amplitube 2). I added compression to the bass track to emphasise it even more.
I added a syn bass track which I mixed so that it morphs out of Bud's real bass playing. I also added some little sequenced bleeps to help propel things along. The morse code beeps at the end are from Omnisphere.
I pitched the whole thing down (tone and tempo) so that the original 74bpm track now runs at 62.5 bpm (or 125bpm depending on your perspective)
Guitars, Bass, Drum Track - Bud
Synths, Effects and timewarping - Particle
Vocals - Char

Char is a bit Beth Gibbons like... thought you might run with that at some point. I like this mix a lot!
