Dance to the Hills (w/ Rebsie)

Description
As we are both people with a sensitivity to the seasons, here is a dance of Spring and renewal for you. This time, instead of a traditional folksong... we would like to offer a little ethereal soul-funk. I wrote the main vocal line for Rebsie's voice but when she heard my demo falsetto version and insisted that we keep it. We hope you enjoy it.

Daniel: Vocals, guitars, Bass, Lyrics
Rebsie: Vocals, Lyrics, lovely song photo

Lyrics
Dance to the Hills (lyrics by Daniel Staniforth & Rebsie Fairholm)

Dream to be
Fearful Symmetry
Oh Come with me
To the hills that lie beyond

Mystery
Find your destiny
Etched in the tree
That shimmers in the pond

Eternal Green (sights unseen)
Sun-spun dream (claim the stream)
Rainlit sheen (skylight queen)
Oh Come and Dance with me
Silver moon (shadow strewn)
A songbird croon (souls attune)
My infant June (cast the rune)
Oh Come and Dance with me

Shadows here
They hold you dear
It's becoming clear
We're right where we belong

Sudden fear
That your loss is near
Oh erase the fear
From this Greenwood song

A single tear
To drench a year
Be of good cheer
This place cannot be wrong

Oh...

This woodland prize
Found in your eyes
I'm mesmerized
By what I feel

Moonlit skies
She's on the rise
I'm magnetized
To what you conceal

No disguise
I can devise
I'm naturalized
By powers that can heal

Silver moon (shadow strewn)
A songbird croon (souls attune)
My infant June (cast the rune)
Oh Come and Dance with me
Eternal Green (sights unseen)
Sun-spun dream (claim the stream)
Rainlit sheen (skylight queen)
Oh Come and Dance with me

Dream to be
Fearful Symmetry
Oh Come with me
To the hills that lie beyond

Mystery
Find your destiny
Etched in the tree
That shimmers in the pond

Come with me
Come with me
Come....

another excellent offering from you two. have you thought about a name for this partnership? RebsiTrick or something. I love the change-up of vocals again and the blending of your very unique styles. Girl from Ipanema...
...comes to mind. It might seem strange, but I am most drawn to the bass line in this composition. It is perfectly balanced with the rest of the arrangement and consistently supports the tune with such a nice counterpoint...The dreamy vocal in the final stanza is very cool. Another facet of your collective talents on this number. Always a rare pleasure to hear your music.
Peace.

You really shine here
Thanks so much for your work on this, and for accommodating my suggestions. You have a tremendous vocal range, and much as I enjoy your baritone, your voice is sublime in this higher register. And blends very well with mine at the same pitch - which is jolly handy.

I'm very proud of this one.

Hi Daniel and Rebsie.......
Mesmerising. You've both excelled your previous high quality with this one.

Sublime. And yes. Ephemeral.

I too was drawn by both the rhythm and the bass. The singing and harmony was perfect and the lyrics, inspired. I could hear Sergio Mendez and his singers performing this one.

I know I'm late to the party but I'm glad that I rechecked the fast scrolling pages here to find music that I may have missed. This is a wonderful find.

Take care.

Paul

Ah, the English and their maypole dances
This is a wonderful summery (springy?) tune. Pretty sounds and pretty voices.

1. I think the way Rebsie's voice comes in in the first verse is a bit tentative. I would use the time-tested formula: one verse with only solo voice (Luna) then the second voice with harmony and fills and what not.

2. Those Maj7 chords are pretty, but there are a little too many repetitions of that one line for me. I know that you have bridge sections, but I was hoping for a mirroring line that would answer that taht descending chord sequence, maybe turning it upside down or something.

Great vocal arrangements, I am very impressed! The beat and the bass keeps it funky, the guitar gives a touch of mellow jazz, very creative indeed. Terrific
Much as I've enjoyed the other two tracks you've done together recently (the instrumental and the acapella) - and I have enjoyed those - this is more my cup of tea. And it's terrific. Kind of like Pink Floyd's 'San Tropez' off 'Meddle' mixed with The Police, All About Eve and The Cocteau Twins, which is perhaps nonsense but I'm struggling to get a complete grip on this masterpiece. Really beautiful and dreamy but with a funky edge too, and I love the vocal sparring throughout, and the lyrics are great too. This has got to appear on an album and it's got to appear on my podcast music show. I can sort out the latter but I trust you'll deal with the former. :-)

Thrilled by this comment Ian
You nail some of the influences.... I was a big fan of AAE and the Cocteau Twins... and of course Floyd. I intended for Rebsie to sing the main vocal but she steered it in this direction and I love the results. We've been throwing a lot of diverse things at each other and the challenge has been invigorating. This piece is very much a Luna Trick type song, what I call ethereal space funk... and she handled it just perfectly. You are welcome to the song (and indeed any of mine) for your show... and it shall certainly appear on an album in the future. Thank you so much for your support and encouragement!

I agree with Rebsie
Your voice has a nice, warm, smooth quality almost like a nice, smooth sip of bourbon and Rebsie adds the nice, sparkling "ice" to go with the drink. Such a great tune. And such a great departure from the stuff you two have been doing as of late, which I have been enjoying immensely. Loved it, guys!

Initiation Song
Splendid, the angel harmony is so fine. More of the breathy whispers and organic suggestions, might be overboard but I can hear them, and a brisk vibraphone solo over the changes and bridge.
This material favors you guys, light and sparkles, air and discovery's atmosphere, such a warm sunny place...
On the second listening i wanted finger cymbals and a few glass chimes, and a melodic bass solo over the changes and bridge.
Well done, an inspiring piece of fun.

Great!
One of those songs which touch you somewhere inside... at least it touched me! Your two voices together, wow. Production well balanced & warm. Maybe some more dynamic control could be applied, that would make it braodcast quality. On the other hand, now it keeps a more natural sound & feel. And, mind you, I just say this in an attempt to be of some use to you. I really do enjoy it the way it is now!
