Cool idea Bill
and really well done - I love the simulations and builds. I have to listen back to back. Next you should do the midi version. You know - the monophonic doofy sound. Did I say Doofy?

the earlier mixes on this were rather brutally switching between 70's and late 80's - i tried to smooth it out a bit... hope it worked

music is a giant playground isn't it?

wow,
first I thought "ok, ok, hmmm, nah.... but then it changed, transformed into a very interesting, morphing wall of sound.
Cool!

maybe i went too far with starting out with a way-simplified ancient electronic intro? (was it that CZ-101 thing?)

anyway, glad you hung in there to listen to the rest of it!

thanks

you
really should be scoring something, anything. this is just a bit of ass shaking movement. excellent. the breakdown in the middle around 1:30 totally caught me off guard. great drums. really freakin cool.

that thing starting around 1:30 was a flash of insight for me. it was an elaboration of the main melody that is echoed and modulated to fit the chord progression. it just kind of happened in only a few minutes of work. i wish i had more control over these sorts of experiences.

thanks

I can hear
your enthusiasm here. Parts of this have a real video game feel - ala Sega Genesis. Kind of funny! It would make a great Sonic level theme! Nice addition to the "lineage". Honestly I wish I was as good at this MIDI mixing stuff as you are. I just suck so bad I can't stand it! You on the other hand... great work!

Do you do this stuff using the piano keyboard? I mean do you usually play stuff on the keys and layer it? Or do you do more mouse clicking type stuff? Some of it really sounds to me like you are playing and using the expression wheel live... If you are not, wow what great programming!

i use various approaches. often i'll play some of the parts on keys, but i also edit the track afterwards to fix mistakes. other times, it's entirely a billion mouse clicks. sometimes i start from loops and modify them as needed - i change the timing, notes, the instrument. recently i've been using drum loops on keyboard synths to get the rhythm, but i change all the pitches. i also have used external scripts to generate notes or chords algorithmically. there are endless possibilities.

i've been playing Sonic with my grandson lately, i guess that sound snuck into my music!

thanks

Eclectic, at best. I learned some music theory at school, and read a ton about it since. I've listened to lots of music over the years. I once played guitar in an actual garage band and actually got paid to play! Once. Although live performance is an... [see more]
