When We Were Young

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
A reflective look back on the remembered idealism of youth as seen many, many years later.

This one has been in the works a month or two and it really didn't start to gel until I actually started recording it. With the exception of the chorus, the lyrics were written as I went. I also decided it was time I dragged out the accordion again, so there's a little bit of that sprinkled in.

Recording and mixing was all done in Logic Express. I'm getting more comfortable with it the more I use it.

And, yes, that's me in the photo.

Lyrics
When We Were Young
©2009 Joseph Gurner

When we were yong, the world spread out before us
full of wonder waiting to unfold

We had our dreams of where our lives would take us
there was nothing outside our grasp

When we were young, life seemed like forever
the days passed like years before our eyes

We spent our time dreaming of tomorrows
that would takes us so far, far away

We drank deep from sweet, sweet wine
while the stars moved above our heads
And we lived as if the moment’
would never end

We laughed beneath the winder moon
and loved beneath the summer sky
the world was ours back
when we were young

When we were young, our tears could fill the oceans
And our smiles could push the clouds away

We had no fear of what would come tomorrow
We welcomed it with fire in our eyes

We drank deep from sweet, sweet wine
while the stars moved above our heads
And we lived as if the moment’
would never end

We laughed beneath the winder moon
and loved beneath the summer sky
the world was ours back
when we were young

When we were young, the world spread out before us
it was all ours to take

We raised our heads looking for tomorrow
The world was our back when we were young

When we were young

looking back...
This song evokes my own reminiscing and imaginations of my childhood and youth. I grew up in the Philippines, and whichever country or planet we grew up in, these lyrics will universally apply. It could very well have been sung by the band Chicago or John Denver. This has elements of a catchy pop/rock/country tune, and I can really feel the yearning and sentimentality in your voice. A great addition to your impressive song compilation, Joe!

oh, and by the way...
I have childhood pics of me riding... not a horse or donkey, but a water buffalo. We used them to plow the farmer's land in rural Philippines. They still do...

Buffalo rider!
I definitely think you should put the pic of you riding the buffalo up on your profile. :)

I definitely think the sentimentality of youth is something that people feel almost universally. It makes us think of a life with less complication, more idealistic, even if that wasn't the case.

Thanks for listening and I'm glad you enjoyed the song. And, BTW, that's the ONLY picture of me on a horse. That particular horse bucked me off into a tree not long after the photo was taken. Haven't been on one since.

Great lyrics Joe
and you did a really great job singing them as well.
Reminds me of something from, "when we were young". It has that kind of sound and feel. Love the harmonies you did on this. Really cool sound and backtracks my friend.

This is a keeper,

Ed

Those were the days...
One of the reasons I decided to go with the accordion was to give it a sound like back "when we were young." To me it evoked Lawrence Welk on one hand and the Grand Ole Opry on the other, both staples of my childhood. And, of course, I love doing songs with lots of harmonies.

Appreciate you listening, Ed. Thanks for the comments!

Accordions Rock!
Thanks, Feter, as always for listening.

I really wish I could do more with the accordion. I'm pretty limited. I'm not very quick on it, so now I just have to stick to slow tempo stuff. Maybe one day... :)

Horses everywhere
We might have to start a new forum with pics of people riding horses (or other animals.)

I actually had to look up J.D. Souther. Once I did, I knew immediately who it was. Very cool.

Thanks for listening, Mark. Glad you enjoyed it.

Coming Home
Obviously, I haven't been around MJ as much recently and it was such a joy to press play and hear a song that so obviously had your fingerprints on it streaming from my speakers. You CAN come home again! :) Your lyrics are filled with that classic Joe bittersweet optimism which I love so much about your music and you. The solo in this is really strong and I'm always down with accordion.

Welcome Home
As well as you know me, you should know I only do the sweet, sentimental stuff in order to get chicks. I mean, what woman can't resist the accordion. ;)

Who'da thought I'd ever be filled with optimism of any kind. The world is a funny place.

Glad you're back around. Hopefully we'l bee hearing some new music soon. *hint, hint* :)

Joe!
This was a great surprise, a song that contains many neat, beautiful parts and performances. First, the lyrics, they can mean something to anyone. I think you've managed to paint a portrait of the innocence of youth very well. Your vocals fit this song perfectly. I love the accordion, and you play it very well as I know the difficulty of manage thus long, drawn out tones. I also love the guitar, in the verses, a little rough but not too rough, the guitar solo, mellow and sweet. Dare I say this is absolutely on of your best ones, in my opinion a solid song with a message and a story that moves me, yeah, this I like for sure!!! Great work!!!

Thanks Mikki
You've always been kind of the benchmark for me here at MJ. Since the first time I heard one of your tunes, I've always been inspired to do better with my own. Your comments really mean a lot and are very appreciated. Thanks so much!

Accordion
I only sort of play the accordion. They guy who used to play accordion in a polka band I was in a few years ago gave me one of his old ones. I can play very slow and deliberately. Maybe a little faster if I only play with one hand. But it's fun. I've only used it in a few tracks.

Glad you enjoyed the tune!

Very Cool
Great lyrics! I love songs like this where those of us who have been around for awhile look back on our experiences and try to make a little sense of them. Accordion adds wonderful background for a lovely ballad. Your voice is very strong and consistent on this song. All in all a powerful presentation!

Great look back...
...Your lyrics capture it all...in this gentle little ballad. The piece is really well-constructed, too, and so satisfyingly serving the story you are telling. The instrumental/guitar bridge is a pleasant surprise in the center of this number. There's just a hint of some dissonance, too, that adds--for me--some extra flavor to your accompaniment. I'm glad I heard this beautiful, personal song.
Peace.

Where ya goin' with that guitar in your hand?

Glad you sat down and recorded this one friend. Well played and recorded.

I love the lyrics, and find myself deeply moved by your vocal performance.

Filled to the brim with interpersonal truth. Timeless.

Thanks
Thanks for the reminder of those wonder-years. You've given us a good dose of what many of us are starting to feel these days as we continue to make our journey. I'm reflecting more and more and hope that there is still time to accomplish a few things.

Nice dreamy tune.
