Yo! What Exit?

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
"Yo ~ You from Jersey? What exit?" Here's my (one-fingered) salute to my home state's crazy highways. Blasting this tune is the next best thing to caffeine when you're getting tired behind the wheel. Just watch your speed, The Man's out.

Instrumentation (described below but) is my Strat on lead, Hofner archtop on rhythm and "bass" and a couple of drum loops. This is a new mix with about 100 little tweaks over a prior version I held-off from posting here.

All about the Hofner Jazzica
Thanks, brother Feter! You can see more of the Hofner (and some dumb rock-star poses) here: http://www.farmerbob.blogspot.com/2003_06_01_archive.html

And you can read ALL about the research that went into my selection of the Hofner Jazzica in this 2003 blog entry I wrote, here:

I grew up in the Philly area...

... driving on the Skukill (sure kill) Expressway going into Philadelphia every now and then. This song is appropriate. And this song is a trip... sound expressions of the first order. Great music and recording.

Sure Kill - love it!
Hey, Jack, for sure, the North/East US has some great highway Spaghetti Bowls of Death! If you download the tune, I included a Google Earth screen save from my hometown, Wayne, NJ, where highways 80, 46 and 23 in Wayne, NJ collide. And "don't get me stah-ted" on getting lost in a rental car leaving Newark Airport!

Radar Love, Doors, ld hot-rod tunes...
Mark, you're dead-on with that Radar Love comment. I wanted a driving tune and was inspired by stuff like that as well as: Stick Shift (I think it's called), a guitar tune with the same riff as Ray Charles' What’d I say; The Doors' Break on Through; and all that old Dick Dale and/or Duane Eddy kinds stuff, which I really haven't approached directly here. Then there's the old Beck-Ola era Jeff Beck feel that I can't seem to escape. And on and on... And: THANKS!

I Hear a lot of really great stuff in this.
that I missed in the last mix I heard. This is a great piece for a single digit salute to the Garden state, and others of that kind Lil' Bro.

Much cleaner now and a lot better definition in the mix. Still love that guitar playin' for sure.

Great track Bob,

Ed

Thanks, Big Bro!
Ed, I stirred and kneaded and greased and did all kinds of rotten things until those little blue dots (i.e., GB's automation "dots") creamed "enough! By the way, you're guitar playing ain't shabby at all, y'know.

What a (road) trip!
Did I forget to mention Jeff Beck in my "influences" reply to Mark (lbstrat) before? If so, it's a glaring omission. Thanks, Reggie. My current neck of the woods isn't NJ, but I visit to see family, and it's always a (road) trip!

Cool tune
Just different to be unique for a driving song bro. Love the guitars, and that skewed break in it. Actually sounds like traffic itself, if it were at all musical... but then again I suppose it is. Gets a D/L from me.

Hehe... aDRENal!
Definitely gets the blood pumping and the eyes darting looking for the exit...

Being a die-hard Californian, imagine me returning from a business trip, first time on the east coast in January, driving a rental car from Exeter NH down to Boston's Logan airport (what the HECK are these roundabout things for, ... screech, crap, here's another one! AND another one!) and finally, almost within sight of Logan rental car return, and CRAP! I'm stuck in 25 lanes of traffic, slowly inching toward some giant TUNNEL taking me away from the airport, I missed the turn! Ack! So I put on my "Dumb Californian" smile, and ask the attendant at the tunnel entrance for help, and he STOPS traffic to let me cut across 5 lanes to get up to the Logan overpass!) Who says East-Coasters have no manners? :-) Anyway, this music brought back that terrifying moment beautifully... but in a good way! :-) Excellent guitarwork here, great fun to listen to!

Drakonis

LLOL - the extra "L" for literally!
In the 90s I had to go to the Boston, Cambridge, Logan, etc. for work (tech journalism type stuff). And I was TERRIFIED by the roads there. I was merely "horrified" by NJ, having grown up there (20 mi West of NYC). THANK YOU for lending an ear.

Thank EVERYONE, (Eric, Karen...); I'll keep trying to keep up!

100 little tweaks
whoa hadn't heard you before mostly because i don't hit much instrumental stuff around here unless it's branded as "surf" or "hot rod" but you are one creative dude, love how this ploughs through about fifteen genres in 2.5 minutes - blaxsploitation, country rock, jazz, prog, etc. also love how you stay completely away from the canned riffs that most other guitar guys can't help themselves from tossing in there - sounds completely original. lead is just killer - all over the place! everybody around here knows that i'm car crazy and can't believe nobody pointed me to this...going to have to take a drive...

My favorite 2 seconds of the song is at 2:32/3
I don't know who cares but since you like my "uncorkings" here (!!!) I'll tell you that my favorite little part of this - sort of an Easter Egg - is at 2:31 to 2:33 where my slide guitar sounds like truck tires skidding and sliding on the road as the driver tries to hit the brakes. Just my imagination, maybe.

I also imagined I was doing a too-fast version of Jimi's Machine Gun at one point on the sah-wah. Delusions can be fun for the deluded, at least!

what exit?
I can feel the stress of being caught in the rush hour in a challenging road mesh. I think it is your choice of drums with a pulsating beat that gives the illusion of an ongoing river of traffic that you'll have to keep up with. The "on the edge" scale stuff you do on the guitar adds to the effect of being frustrated and even nervous about making the right exit:) Very cool concept, and the music goes very well with your salut to the crazy highways. Some Beatles'ish riffs — almost a little 'day tripper' sense now and then. Great guitar sound and playing:)

About your drum & guitar comments:
Day Tripper... now THAT is a trip. It never occurred to me but I think I hear what you mean in some of those two-chord (and slide lead) back-and-forth parts? To tell you the truth, I just mixed it up and didn't know exactly what would come of the oven on this one.

On the drums, there's one primary loop under this, which I doubled, and on the second, I threw all kinds of stuff at it including GB vocal fx and flanging, then brought it up and down in parts of the song. Just a bunch of fun.

having just gotten back from a Newark trip I can relate. It was a concrete jungle down there. Love the tones you create with the wah? pedal, at least I think it was a wah. Very subtle shifts in tone and texture on the leads to great effect. Jammin tune Bob
